overpriced and second rate

Kel-Tec, Ruger LCP, Lorcin, Jennings, Raven, Highpoint, Charter Arms, Kahr Arms...

Again, I think some people are confused about the point of the thread. There are guns that are second-rate and there are guns that are overpriced, but which guns are both second-rate and overpriced? Hi-points aren't overpriced. Neither are Kel-Tecs. Lorcin, Jennings, and Raven aren't even second-rate; they're reputed to be total crap. But are they overpriced?

I have to say any of the tricked out 1911 clones when purchased for self defense carry. I say this because the OP said "overpriced and overrated."

Any decent 1911 model with good carry sights and fired enough to work action smooth is a super carry gun as is, the way John Browning designed the gun. All the other stuff is ornamental and not needed. The gun was designed for SD work and has proven itself, in it's original configuration, over the many years it has been in use.

If I were to go back to the 1911, I would buy a "slick" Plain Jane model with Novaks and no other modifications. Then I would take it to the range and put a couple of thousand rounds through it until it was smooth and I had at least three magazines that worked all of the time. Nothing to hang up on clothes or malfunction at the wrong time. Just doesn't get any better than that.

That said, I carry S&W J-Frames all of the time! They hide better and the drill is easy for an old man to remember!

Rohrbaugh for certain when it comes to overpriced, worst sticker shock I ever had.

Not necessarily... I don't think the Glocks nor most "standard" 1911's you can get from Colt or Springfield and a couple others are overpriced nor over-rated at all.

I do agree, though, that the Kahr's are over-priced and over-rated.

Good God, CDH, do live somewhere senses of humor are outlawed? That was funny!

The OP was looking for overpriced and over-rated, not one or the other.
So I'll defend the Rohrbaugh as not being over-rated because it gets very high marks by almost all of it's owners (including me), but I can't argue the "over-priced" party, because it is. But it's as close to being a "perfect" carry SD pistol as you can get.

As far as your Glocks and Colts, they're not that expensive in the big scheme of things, and are both well made brands that still offer good reliability as SD pistols.

Any Colt from the last twenty years.

I believe the thread was about a company's products, not their management staff.

In most cases, those two go hand in hand so drail's comment was a very legitimate statement.

Well, I guess that I shouldnt have bought that Kahr I just got since they are over priced and over-rated  If only I could find someone who makes a gun that small and nice for that price...oh wait, there arent any :D

Kimber - the SIS pricing is especially insane! They started well, then got just like Chrysler with their trucks and SUVs - driven by greed!

XDM - BS new design to jack the price $200!

Any Colt - real shame, too. Lost the market just like IBM did for PCs.

One man's humble opinion, I'd say glock. Don't get me wrong I'll go nowhere without my baby 26, but...
Overrated, because they boast perfection. Out of the box, the very least you must do is knock off those cruddy plastic sights. That's $150 or so to have it done. If I had to pay a gun smith to do the work I have done to the g-26 alone; $200, $300?
That is where I get to over priced on these guns, who out there is going to pay $800+ for a glock? It's a great gun, and I've had only a few problems with the G-17, that were my fault (and I worked that out). But man, for that kind of ka-ching, plenty of guns work just fine out of the box, without all that work.
Of course I'm one to gripe... I like doing the work.

Any 3rd Gen Colt SAA. The fit-finish-action are not worth $1000 +. No wonder the Italians own the CAS market.

Any Colt handgun from the UAW strike days. For that matter, Colt has been coasting on their famous name for last 25 years.

Any recent S&W revolver with key safety. Such nanny features can get you killed.

I have to agree! Most 3rd generation Colt's are terrible in the fit and finish department in relation to their lofty price tag. I have no problem paying $1200 for a high quality SAA, Colt just doesn't make one. Those of the last couple years are much better but still not up to USFA's standards.

Ditto on the internal lock S&W's.

Oh, you're exactly right. No one has ever had to deal with annoying, painful hammer bite, and no one has ever found the trigger length to be unsuitable for their hand, and no one has ever found the shape of the mainspring housing to be incorrect. Yeah, those are just cosmetic issues that never affected anyone for real.

S & W

S & W 625 JM  The grips don't match the grip frame and they're ugly, the extractor star leaves don't fit the cylinder and the cylinder holes are not chamfered to load semi-wadcutter,the hammer finish flakes in the action and the cylinder throat is too tight.....and all that cost money to fix . And I don't want to have to argue you with the factory people and wait for a long time to get it back. They charge a LOT of money for their gun and that's what you get. I got my money back anyway .

XDM. There was nothing to improve on the XD, that would justify the price increase.

Ditto that.

I've had both my XD45/4" bi-tone and XD9SC for a couple of years and love 'em both.
When the XDM was introduced, I sat there and scratched my head trying to figure out which of those "new and improved" features I just "had to have".

Turns out; none. None of the new features add to the practicality of the original design for it's intended purpose other than maybe the interchangeable grip straps.
But the originals fit me and my wife just fine, so the only reason I can see for spending the extra $$$ for an XDM would be if your hands are so non-average that you need to be able to go with a different grip strap.

Other than that, the rest of the stuff is just fluff, and I don't think I'd have the time to discuss the new features with a BG before using the pistol for the purpose it was intended... self defense.

Current production Colts
Kimber
Kahr
HK

I've had at least one of each's products, and they've all disappointed. :(

Any gun (new) that is priced over $550.00.
I just love statements like this. I love when people who know nothing about costs of design and production try to dictate what everything should cost. I also love when they try to pretend that their is nothing that can be done that is more valuable than some arbitrary number they come up with in their mind.

Why do so many people think that HK is overrated and overpriced? I'm looking to buy a P30, I think it's not too overpriced and people who own them love them.
