I am considering Carrying a gun-No CCW

Thanks guys.

What state is the most lenient with the law of gun carrying? Can I just apply in Des Moines and still live in Iowa City? Jesus. Thanks for the head's up guys. It's really aggravating hearing about all of this bull**** and all of the things that you have to do that is supposed to be your freedom in the beginning.

Thanks

Don't carry without a permit.

From what I understand, the sheriff of each county issues the permits. The police department shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Here is a link to the Iowa statutes regarding concealed carry:

Here's another link that might help:

Sheriffs are politicians. Iowa City is probably one of those places where the antis are more vocal (not particularly more numerous).

Sheriffs can add additional requirements on permit holders above what is provided for by statute. They are given a lot of discretion. Some have probably misused it--giving permits to some and not to others with no consistent set of standards. Perhaps someone has been hurt or killed after being denied. If so, the law definitely needs to be challenged and changed.

Use the procedures laid out in the law. Don't break the law.

Check your laws on carrying non-concealed weapons. I know in Arizona, you can carry a handgun legally in public as long as a certain percentage of it is visible.

I would say like the others that it's not a good idea to carry concealed without proper licensing. It does more harm than good if you are involved in a routine police stop and you end up filling their quota for the night. Several years for what would have been a fix-it ticket for a broken tail light doesn't sound very fun to me.

<<What state is the most lenient with the law of gun carrying?>>

Vermont & Alaska are best, no permit required.

Florida, Colorado, Arizona & Utah are pretty easy.

Don't carry illegally. Not only will you get in trouble, but you'll make the rest of us look bad & give the anti's ammunition.

no cch permit

depends on the state. if your state offers CCH, and you don't carry legal, you will be rewarded.

Free room & board, weight lifting, clothing and a 350 pound freakazoid named "Bugalo Jones" as your new best "friend". I would suggest soap on a rope.

I would have to say don't do it. Having someone getting caught while carrying illegally is exactly what the gun hating media salivates over and is what gives gun owners a bad name. I think you owe it to the rest of us who follow the rules to jump through all the hoops in order to carry legally in your state-if possible, or, like many have suggested, move to a state where you are allowed to carry. I live in Illinois and I realize I won't be getting to carry legally anytime soon. Does it piss me off? Sure it does. But until we vote the bums out who are denying me this "privilege" I'm screwed. I live in a nice neighborhood and rarely have to go in to bad ones so I will wait until I help elect politicians that recognize my 2nd Amendment rights. If you are caught carrying illegally you can bet your chances of obtaining a carry permit in the future will be greatly affected, not to mention possibly losing your right to own firearms. Think about the consequences and the affects on all law abiding gun owners.

Jail time for a concealed weapon? I doubt it. If you have a clean record with no priors it is quite unlikely that you will do any time other than maybe your initial arrest, if you're even jailed then - probably just get a ticket or citation depending on where you are. I've spoken with city and county prosecutors about this very issue - the most you're likely to get it a disorderly conduct citation unless you were the aggressor in a conflict or brandishing unnecessarily - even then, gun charges are often the first to be dropped when other charges are pending, even in murders.

I'm not talking about NYC, California, or DC laws, where attitudes are clearly not favorable to gun rights - I have no idea what prosecutors would do in those areas.

In most situations an otherwise law-abiding citizen is just not going to do time, or even end up in serious trouble if he is somehow discovered.

Let me be clear, I am NOT advocating carrying illegally and never will. IF you still choose to carry sans permit, remember - it is illegal, you're on your own, and it might be best if you know the name and number of an attorney you trust should things go bad.

HOWEVER - for me, if I felt at all threatened or worried about my travels and circumstances I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by six!

Let the flames begin!!!

Nobody, in good conscience, can ever tell you to break the law - even if the law is silly and not fair - it is still the law.

Did you even try to get the permit??? Never just assume you cannot get a permit, "if you have a clean record". I would read up on the application requirements (www.packing.org) and I would file for the CW permit, and make photocopies of your application. If your denied, file again, and again, and make copies of everything. If your hitting a brick wall, send copies of your denied applications to your state and federal congressmen, saying you are following procedure and cannot get a permit. If they ignore you, embarrass them by sending an editorial letter to a local paper. If you have a clean record, follow the rules, and you push enough, you will eventually get your permit. If you carry without a permit and get caught, you will get some sort of criminal penalty for it and you will probably never be able to get a CW permit anywhere, ever again, so why risk it.

Sirius GTO - I'm in the same boat here in Wisconsin, but here it's worse this is a no CCW state. I can't believe that most states have them and we don't, but because we have too many liberal Democrats running things that we can't defend ourselfs. Makes me sick, I've thought of carrying too. I believe that what firebreather01 says is correct though. It's fairly good advice that you've gotten, but also it's easy for a lot of these guys who are able to CCW to say "hey, DON'T carry to protect yourself if it's illegal where YOU live."

Are you at least carrying a 3" blade for the time being? With your belt clip on your pocket of course so you won't break any precious laws obviously:)

Move to Texas

If you don't have a weapon on you they will help you get one. Oh, I live in Alabama and we still display our guns in the back window on a rack. But, on the serious side, you might try a few NRA stickers and the S&W decal works like the ADT sign in the front yard.

actually I have read about the requirements but not applied. It says Johnson County is one of the hardest to get a CCW permit.

Thanks for the interesting read guys. So am I right to assume it is LEGAL to carry a weapon in public in Texas? That is interesting.

Also, when I was 18, I got picked up for shoplifting, and i kid you not, a CHAPSTICK!!! It was at cub foods and they have a mandatory law that states you have to get called to the police station. So... I get a $270 fine for a chapstick that is worth $2 dollars most just because i was short $2 at the time (I bought the case of mountain dew).

So, my question is, do they take this stuff into consideration when they give CCW permits? Or do they only worry about people with felonies?

I'm 21 now and attending the University of Iowa, should I worry about the shoplifting sticker being stuck to me for the rest of my life?

Thanks

Sirius....

Shoplifting is a misdemeanor in our state (Texas). If you want your record expunged, call a lawyer and see if you can get it done.

I'm curious...you said you are a student at Iowa State, but is that your permanent address, or just where you're living while you go to school? Where do you vote? If your folks live elsewhere and you live with them when you're not in school, then you would go to your HOME county and try there, I would think. But IANAL, and I'm certainly not from Iowa, so take that with the grain of salt it's offered with. :)

Of course you can carry in Texas....IF YOU HAVE A CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE. (There are some exceptions: if you are on a journey you can carry in the car without a CHL, if you are going hunting or shooting at a range, you can carry to and from those activities without a CHL). Otherwise, let me echo what everybody else has said:

DON'T BREAK THE LAW.
DON'T BREAK THE LAW.
DON'T BREAK THE LAW.

Consider a taser. In most states those can be legal carried and can be quite effective.

My advice is not to carry, unless someone has threated you severe bodily harm and you can honestly feel your life is in immediate and mortal danger. I know in some states you can carry if you can prove credible threats or have proof of someone violating a restraining order you have against them.

carryuing without a permit

Can you spell jail? Also. if you apply for a ccw with this offense on your record you will have no chance to carry legally.

What would you need one in Iowa for anyway?

Caught carrying in IL and it could be a felony. You definitely don't want a felony conviction on your record if you plan on handling any kind of firearm in the future. Really tho, you don't want a felony conviction on your record even if you don't plan on handling firearms. They just aren't a very good thing to have on a record.
