I love my Sig's & HK's but the Ruger P series would be my choice.
I have no idea how many rounds I have through mine with out a hiccup.
I haven’t cleaned it in nearly 4 years and up to a year ago I shot it at least once a week (300-500rds). I still remember when they came out and Ruger threaded a barrel and put a screw down it and fired off a round. I believe it bent the ejector and that was it. The ejector was replaced and they say they shot 20,000 through it with out a hitch. Hard to beat that.

Sometimes I get a bit confused when I read members replies to questions on here. I think that most of the time the questions are very clear but then you get someone saying "I'd take a tank" that wasn’t the question. Ya we would all chose a tank even if we are just "mall ninjas". Sometimes people change the subject also (kind of like I just did) sorry bout that. Just a lil rant.

Obviously the OP intended for you to be carrying a rifle in this equation... hence the title "Which handgun would you take to war as your sidearm?".
FWIW soldiers and marines who carry crew served weapons generally do not carry rifles and sidearms are a valid part of their kit. If you think you're tough try carrying an M240G, an M4, 23 pounds of body armor and 40 pounds of ammunition and some food/water.

Here we go again off toppic!

PS i don't want to nbe a "Mall Ninja" I havent worn my PJ to the mall in a long time. I want to be a Mall Cowboy:p

A handgun is a secondary weapon in combat.

So, while carrying a rifle - the biggest caliber I could get and have ammo for - I would opt for a old manufacture S&W revolver. They work without magazines and tend to not break down.

This is with the proviso I could get ammunition for it; at least enough to have ready when I need it.

As has been mentioned, one carries what is issued in reality. Secondly, on a grand scale, handguns in combat don't mean squat.

For all the mall ninja's and arm chair commandos out there.....if it comes down to having to use a sidearm in a combat situtation then your fighting a loosing battle and are definately in a situtation that you shouldn't be in. There's a reason that all soldiers over here WILL have a rifle (m4 or m16) on them before they leave the fob and go on a mission.

Yeah but, that wasn't the question that was asked in the poll. It was "Which handgun would you take to war" I don't remember anything being asked about a rifle. You are arguing a point that the OP didn't even ask about.

And just because the OP didn't mention anything about a rifle, doesn't mean that he thinks the handgun would be your primary weapon. Sheesh, there's no need to call everyone " mall ninja's and arm chair commandos "

Handguns in combat don't mean squat....

I think that there are quite a few people, living and dead, who would dsisagree with that statement, if they could.

True, handguns don't win battles, but they just might save the live of the soldier who does. Handguns are for the times when you are not on the assault. When you are not "out on ops", but answering the call of nature. Or in your fart sack. Or in a hole in the ground in the middle of the night, and have to repel boarders at arms length, places where the rifle (even the short carbine) is to big an bulky.

So I would choose a DA revolver, .38 cal, or larger. Because I'm too old and fat to be a tunnel rat, to weak and slow to be gung ho. The only way I going to war (again) is in the rear with the gear!

You young bucks go out and do the job, and I'll tinker with your broken toys when you come in. But when we get sappers in the wire, that model 66 thats on my person ALL THE TIME is going to a real comfort as I head for a rifle.

Which handgun would I choose to take into combat, given my choice?

Hmm... Good question. There's any number of decent choices, but to pick just 1?

A CZ 75 would be one choice, tied with a BHP. I know that the plastic fantastics are nice, but I still want real metal when the chips are down.

But I wouldn't feel at all bad about carrying what I've got set aside for such purposes, should it come down to that. Flame suit on, but keep in mind that I trust it and I don't care if you do or not: my Taurus PT-92. So far, it has been just as reliable (100%) and accurate as the name brand kissing cousin combat pistol. It has proven itself to me. Why spend more when I won't have anything more to show for it?

Heck, I wouldn't even feel bad about carrying my ol' 4" 686, or for that matter SWMBO's ol' 4" Model 15. Either one of those would be ample as a combat sidearm. Either one is enough to reliably get the job done.

Yep. They are darned useful when the other guy is trying to crawl into your hole with you. They are darned useful if you happen to be a crew served weapons gunner like I was (armed with a 1911 at the time) and don't even have a rifle. They just might let you live long enough to reach your rifle if it comes down to it, like if they catch you out taking care of, uh, "business" or other such activity. POL duty. Pitching cases of ammo off the back of the truck. Same thing, rations, or other supplies. There's any number of mundane things that soldiers have to do in semi-tactical, rear area situations where the rifle might not be right at hand.

In the real world, two points:

1) You don't get to take your personal sidearm, except in certain elite units.

2) Even in those, there are usually only a few models the guys go for, so ammunition and parts have at least some commonality.
While this is true, it really doesn't apply to me any more. My active duty military days are behind me. If I go to war now it will undoubtedly be as part of a militia, armed with whatever I happen to have on hand. If they issue me anything in that case, it'll most likely be just a rifle, or maybe a LAW or 2 (like the Germans did back in the latter days of WWII with the Panzerfaust). In that case, I'll be keeping my personal handgun, thank you.

I'm very sure that many of the handguns listed would do a good job. But I have to vote 1911, with cz 75b as a bug.

I'm most accurate with my RIA 1911, I don't know why, just seems to point better.

It's a proven design to say the least.

I'd also take a metal gun like the 1911 so that when you ran out of ammo, you could beat the enemy to death with that 2 lb club.

A sig. I handled the 226, 229 and 225 and they feel GREAT. Right into my hand and better than any handgun I've felt.

Non-hague/geneva(Hollowpoints) 226 in 9mm. Not the best, but everyone uses it so ammo will be around.

FMJ only. Sig 220 in .45ACP.

Although in reality, I'd rather have a personal type rifle than pistol. I know it "Works", and since i don't have any actual combat XP, I ain't qualified, but I don't wanna risk my life on a .223.....It should work, but who knows....

Ooops, sorry if I came across a little harsh. It was suppose to be a little twisted humor but I guess it didn't read that way.
Can I blame it on the fact that it was 121 degrees today, its saturday night, and I haven't had a beer or a date in 10 months....

I used an N frame .357 magnum. It saved my life twice. So I must reject your "expert" advice.
