I'm a "1911 guy", but - I would take a Glock 21SF and as many 13 round magazines as I could get my hands on. I was looking at a FNP .45 yesterday at a local shop here. I was very impressed. I really liked it. It felt very rugged, and solid. It holds 15 rounds in the magazine, and has a slimmer feeling grip than a 21SF. Hmmmm............

S&W M&P .45 ACP since concealment is no longer necessary in the situation of war I would drop in a 14 round mag and have a few more mags fro back up. This would be my prefered side arm. I do love my 1911s, but for reliability and ease of cleaning I would take the Smith with me.
Glocks just do not fit right in my hands. As soon as they make an ergonomic grip that fits my hand I will be at the front of the line to buy one, and would cary it without hesitation.

This is a great daydream question, but in reality you want the same caliber as the other troops and the same gun for emergency spare parts IF needed. People die in war and they sure don't need their weapon or ammo anymore.

OK away from reality and back to the daydream, my going to war weapon would be #1 P226 in 40cal, #2 XDm in 40cal, both due to reliability, accuracy, power and most of all capacity. Now if capacity were equal among weapons I would opt for the war proven weapon, the 1911, most likely the GSR by Sig.

I have treated my XD .45 so badly and it has treated me so well I couldn't consider taking any other gun into a situation I knew would more than likely require a gun.

I'd be happy to take either my USPc or G19.

But I don't think I'll be going back to war anytime soon and if I do, I'll be carry a M9. :(

Sig Sauer...just a matter of preference to me. Glocks, Sigs, 1911's it's pretty much the same argument over and over. The difference in reliability between these three is pretty much negligible if you ask me. Just pick what you like.

Well, since I've actually been there, let me add this. Carry whatever there is plentiful ammo for. in our Hueys we carried M14s because we had all kinds of 7.62 on board for the machine guns. Rifle racks right behind the pilot seats.

The Crew Chiefs also carried .45 cal grease guns and for that reason we used 1911s as there was plenty of ammo for them as well.

We learned that a .30 carbine or a 9mm will slow someone down, but a .762 or a .45 will knock them off their feet!

The M16, (which I never had a chance to fire over there) was a good weapon after some initial problems, but we had no extra ammo on board for them. Just .762 and .45s.

+1 to whatever the unit carries

In the real world, two points:

1) You don't get to take your personal sidearm, except in certain elite units.

2) Even in those, there are usually only a few models the guys go for, so ammunition and parts have at least some commonality.

Even in the theoretical world, why go for a monster sized gun like the MK 23 when it's just a backup to a rifle, and when you will probably be packing a lot of other equipment around? The IBA alone will run in the ballpark of 30 lbs; add to that a kevlar helmet, pack, camelback, ruck, etc...

So, I want whatever is commonly available, and preferably light and not too bulky.

Definitely the Sig P226...

Sig Sauer P226 = duty/combat sidearm par excellence.

Colt 1911. It's what I carried for real when I was in the service "a few years back." The Johnny-come-lately 9mm Beretta has more capacity. The 1911 has more guts. :)

'the only sidearm I would take to war is a Glock.

'No major power has ever adoptd th Glock as its service pisto;l There is a reason for that.

For all the mall ninja's and arm chair commandos out there.....if it comes down to having to use a sidearm in a combat situtation then your fighting a loosing battle and are definately in a situtation that you shouldn't be in. There's a reason that all soldiers over here WILL have a rifle (m4 or m16) on them before they leave the fob and go on a mission.

Probably my CZ 75B. Plenty of capacity, and I shoot it the best of all my guns. For some reason, I'm just more accurate with it. Can we pretend we're in an unconventional war and I don't have to use FMJ? I don't care for 9mm FMJ, but hollow points are a different matter. The gun has had NO failures, ever. If I have to use FMJ, than maybe a better choice would be my Colt Commander in .45ACP. As long as I can bring my AK, either is a good backup.

Whatever the military was issueing at the time. Nothing like being able to use a multi-billion dollar logistics/support structure.
