what was your FIRST handgun?

I was 17(1987) my brother and all his friends were into big revolvers (10-15 years older than I) so I bought the first Ruger Blackhawk 44mag when one of the group upgraded to TC.

Mine was a S&W Model 19 with a 4" barrel and nickel plate. It was broke out of the box, so I sent it back to the factory. After six months they still hadn't fixed it. So they got to keep it and I got a Dan Wesson Model 15 (?) 357 mag.

So much for the "good old days" when they made 'em right.

Taurus blued steel model 85, 20-odd years ago .... still have it, it's my car gun, gets a ride whenever I'm going someplace I can't carry ... great gun, perfect all these years, with slightly bigger than stock Hogue wood grips provided by my lovely wife, it's a treat to shoot ...

First handgun was an M1911A1 that actually belonged to Uncle Sam.

First one I bought myself was a 6" Ruger Single Six .22/.22mag in 1979, still to this day regret selling that gun in 85. Had to pay a debt and that's all I had to my name at the time.

S&W Model 410 [.40S&W]

I did a LOT of research about the best blend of capacity and power for self-defence. I sold it a year later as I couldn't keep group sizes under 1 foot at 15 yards and I developed a horrible flinch with it.

I bought a Sig P229 in .40 from a small shop in Sierra Vista, AZ, while I was down there for the Army in 2003. That gun was traded for Glock 27 as a backup to my 22. The 27 was traded for a Sig p239 when I left that department. the P239 was traded for a LNIB 3913 LadySmith for my wife about a month ago. Although I'm happy for my wife and her first pistol, I still miss my first pistol and I think I always will.

My first was a Ruger 6 in 22lr. I had a lot of fun with it. MY second (first center fire) was a S&W 686 in 357 magnum. The S&W was stolen many years ago and never seen again.

The Ruger 6 belongs to my youngest brother now.

SigP6 (225)
Refurbished, beaten up, single stacked 8 rounds of 9mm.
older than me, and it still shot like a dream. Sold it to a very close friend of mine when I switched to .40. I still miss it. It was a really fun gun to shoot

My FIRST handgun ?

In 1970 I bought a new Colt Combat Commander for $125 (MSRP) --- wish I had bought a dozen !! I still have the pistol, but the old girl has been to the dance more than once. I fitted a Heinie "drop-in" single port compensator, and S&A Mag-Well. I sent it to Wilson and had the sights changed - Bo-Mar Lo-Mount rear and matching front, and a trigger job. He also installed an ambi thumb safety. Then I sent it to Robar for their NP-3 finish. Got it back and later installed a Wilson Stainless beaver-tail GS. All that was 20+ years ago. I have been very pleased with the way the finish has held up. The old girl is showing her age, but the finish has not chipped, flaked, peeled, or worn through. Gonna hang onto this one. Got a set of VZ's and Wilson "strap-on" checkered front strap on it now.

And without the compensator --------

Early 80's, Beretta 92 or M9 as duty carry and a Colt Detective Special as off duty carry.
Red terrorists (Brigate Rosse) were killing around politicians, giornalists and LEOs.
A lot of water has flowed under bridge since then, but we still alive!
"Nec recisa recedit"

6 inch model 586 Smith and Wesson, purchased in 1986. I put many many rounds through that gun. $303.00 out the door. Sold it in 94 for $350.00 to pay the rent while between jobs. I miss that gun, it was one rugged performer.

Mine was a Taurus pt 24/7 pro. At first I thought that it was a great gun, and bragged about it. About 500 rounds in gun could not make it through a whole magazine without a FTF. I was going to sell it to the lgs, but my brother in law wanted it. I told him about the problems, but he still wanted it. I think he still has it, but did send it in to taurus.

I'm somewhere between pdogkilr and dasguy...
My first handgun is a Colt Stainless Commander that I bought NIB in '89. They had just come out, and I had read a review by Massad Ayoob.
I had just become interested in shooting, and wanted a pistol in the worst way. The former Marine in me badly wanted an M1911, but the only thing near my price range was the Springfield Armory offering. The S&W DA autos were also tempting, as were .22s, for practice and training.
After reading Mas' writeup, I came across the stainless Commander in a pawn shop, and that was it!
It has been a faithful, reliable friend, and if it came down to cases, it would be my "one & only".

My first handgun was a Rohm Mdl 66 22 lr, and 22 mag :eek:got it when I was 13 and yes I still have it. It was given to me by my dad. It was the only gun he gave me before he died 2 years later. I have shot a lot of rounds through it, It has been in retirement for about 15 years now but may shoot it again someday.

A Smith and Wesson Sigma Series .40 caliber.

At the time I was interested in becoming a police officer so I asked the salesman about the Glock 22. I has done my research and was darn sure that's what I wanted. The salesman told me about the Sigma which was nearly identical to a Glock and would save me money. I bought it... and ended up selling it off a couple years later. I just didn't like it too much.

I often wondered why a salesman would talk me into a cheaper gun. Either they had a lot of those laying around or they got a bigger profit on them. Alternatively, maybe he was just nice and wanted to save a young kid a couple bucks on his first gun. I'll never know.

Very first handgun? Was not "mine". U.S.M.C. issue Colt 45 ACP.
I did later acquire one for my own. It was "accurized". And when the guys in my (tech school) class needed to qualify on the pistol range, this is the one they bummed. In return, they brought me ammo.
