What is your "best buy" gun?

I'm not going to go back years and years and say "I got this for "X". "X" was a lot more money back then.

But a couple of years ago, I got this 1984 Ruger 77/22 with the 2x7 Simmons (Made in Japan, not China) scope for $400.00. When you consider what a new 77/22 costs, it makes my list.

Since this is handguns, I traded a Glock 19 for this Smith & Wesson 4" Model 29-2. I'd go out and buy a new Glock to make this trade again.

And last week, I paid $99.00 for this 1952 "Unique", 22 semi-auto. An all steel 22, made in France during the post-war years, in limited shooting, it seems to be well worth what I paid for it.

My eyes aren't what they used to be. Who makes that French .22 (is it .22lr/short/mag)? I wasn't even aware of such...Interesting.

-Cheers

It's a 22 LR. They were made by "La Manufacture d'Armes des Pyrénées,Hendaye" (stamped Made in France" on the barrel) during the early 1950's and imported by Sears, Montgomery Wards, and other large department stores. It has about a 3" barrel, a 9 round magazine (+1), and is a S/A. The hammer is semi-concealed inside the slide rail.

Just in the last year...

Beretta 92FS Inox NIB condition 3 mags. $400
Arsenal Bugarian Makarov mint...$100
Swiss K31 excellent WITH 420 rounds of GP11 and 400 rounds Prvi ammo...$500

I really enjoy attending gun auctions here in Hoosierland. With a bit of self-control, I can pick up a few...or several... "Buy low, Sell high" guns to help keep my armory growth going. Self-Control, and doing a lot of pre-auction homework, with the aid of the internet and a couple of price-guides, can keep the "Hobby" in the black for fun and profit.

My best deal so far, Is this Ruger Blackhawk 44 Magnum, John Wayne Commemerative. I did buy it for less than $375, and was quite pleased when a formal appraisal set it's value at between $1800-$2000.

A couple more Luger "best buys" here...

In 1999 I paid $500 cash for a 41 byf (Mauser) with black plastic grips. I didn't like the grips but otherwise the P08 was about 98% and all matching. Probably didn't have 100 rounds through it and must have been packed away for years so I couldn't walk away. Never fired it, too nice to shoot. Good thing, now "black widows" in this condition are worth around $2500! Of course back then I'd never heard of a black widow byf nor had the seller.

My 1913 DWM purchased for about $150 in 1975 was a good deal too. Ugliest Luger in a pawn shop but I was broke and it was cheap. Later discovered it has parts from about 15 other Lugers but I've shot thousands of rounds through it. Next year hope to fire a 100 year old P08! Only one part ever broke and was cheap to fix. It may be worth $700 today, just a shooter.

Ruger Mark II Government model. Stainless, target finger rest wood grips. $60.00 about seven years ago. Guy didn't want to clean it. :D

It wears an Aimpoint on it now that cost about what the gun listed for then. :D

S&W 629 Classic 8 3/8" 44 Magnum. I traded up several times to finally arrive at this revolver. It had a trigger job to boot, so it's a sweet shooter. And the dollar amount I have invested in this hangun....... $0.00 thus it is, by far, my "best buy" gun ever! :D

Claims Rep.

S&W 629 Classic 8 3/8" 44 Magnum. ..

Classic Americana at its best! Suddenly I have the urge to fire up "Magnum Force";)--Would have been kind of interesting if Harry carried the 629...Course, they started making that a few years later.

My best buy gun would have to be a Ruger Super RedHawk, Stainless, .44 Mag, 9.5" barrel. It came with a Micro-trac scope, a Red Dot scope, 2 speed loaders, earmuffs, shoulder holster and carry case, and a half box of Remmie 180 jhp's. Total cost was $400. It was a classic case of having a bud who has a bud who was really hurting for some cash.

I bought a Charles Daly semi auto 12 guage at a show for 50 bucks. The dealer said it did not cycle properly, but I took a chance that I could fix it. I took it home and disassembled it. The insides looked like it had never been fired, so I lubed everything up good and took it to the range. Two boxes of 3"mags later and the thing will now cycle anything I feed it. My daughter uses it in trap shoot competitions and recently won her first open shoot. That wa sthe best $50 I have ever spent.

Hey Freebird,

For $400 only one of us would walk away happy !!! (and it wouldn't be me !) I spent a lot at that auction, and hopefully that beautiful Ruger is going to pay for most of my new 'toys'. Watch for it on GinsAmerica or Gunbroker in a month or so.
AL

I guess my latest "best buy" would be my $325 S&W 5906 in almost new condition, in the original plastic box, with all the paperwork and 3 mags. It had barely been shot.

Other, not so recent BB's:

1. S&W 4506 in excellent condition, 3 mags, $400.
2. S&W 4006 TSW in excellent condition, 2 mags $325.
3. Beretta 84, claimed to be in 85% condition, is about 95% in reality, $305.
4. Beretta 92FS, older one, 98%+ with 5 mags, in the original box, $403
5. My first, and best fantastic deal in about 2 decades, a Dan Wesson 715, with one minor scratch on it looked unfired, custom (must better and stronger than the factory sights)sights, 3 grips, the box, a pistol rug, the wrench, for $269. I couldn't figure out why nobody was bidding on it. What was I missing? Turned out nothing. I put a max bid of $415 on it, and I thought, "Well, if I gave it a shot, and if I get it, great, if not, well...". I was shocked when the bid never went up.

CZ 452 for $150 about 4 years ago. Guy claimed he only wanted what he paid for it. I was more than happy to drive half way across the state to meet up with him for that one. :D

Sometimes it comes in waves. Within the last several months I bought:

A 99% S&W K frame Model 10-6 4" 38 spcl. (made 1969) traded in from a security company. A friend working for LGS called me and said "come here and buy this!" Was carried but hardly ever fired. A real beauty. What a great shooter. $225 OTD.

A 98% S&W J frame Model 36-1 3" 38 spl. (made 1981) from an old gent that was thinning out the heard. Shot it only a couple of times. Clean and accurate little shooter. $200 OTD.

A 95% Ruger Black Hawk with 4 5/8 45 Conv. and with both LC and ACP Cyl. (made 1972) in nice shape and flawless operation. Another guy thinning the heard. Nice shooter too. $250 OTD.

I've also paid a way bit more for a few other items over the years than I should have so I guess it tends to even out over time I hope.

I think the real standout here are the police turn in deals, like all the happy people that bought 6906s and 4006 Smiths for $300-$350. Those would list
way over the $450 polys we see today. The ones I bought were not worn at all, as in not even really dirty. I don't want to rant, but these were a steal.
