Thousands Rally for Immigrants Across U.S.

Do it for everybody, okay. Only problem with that is it spreads manpower too thin.
INS doesn't have the manpower for that either, so that arguement was garbage. Nor are hispanics the only illegal immigrants.
You also need warrants when you go house to house, unless you don't do Constitutional either. Otherwise nobody has to let you in or answer questions. There is not other basis for asking for proof of citizenship. There must be reasonable suspicion of something and being hispanic is not illegal. Unless you like to pay more taxes for large legal settlements.
Same with checkpoints asking for papers before letting people pass.
However, rounding up (or tracking) those who congregate for day labor is legal. Using this to build a list of (and investigating) employers who knowingly use illegal immigrants can be done. Surely this is easier than investigating the parts of an organized crime family.

Some Immigration Marchers Pay High Price
Thursday, April 13, 2006 2:46 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By ANNA JOHNSON

CHICAGO (AP) — Six employees at a seafood restaurant in Houston were fired this week after skipping work to take part in a pro-immigration march. In Detroit, 21 immigrants lost their jobs as meat cutters after attending a similar protest last month.

And several students at a high school near Tampa, Fla., were suspended this week for walking out of class to go to a demonstration.

Across the country, workers and students have paid a price for attending the immigration rallies that have recently swept the nation. They have lost jobs or been cited for truancy for joining the hundreds of thousands who have protested proposed federal legislation that would crack down on illegal immigrants.

In one case, the family of a 14-year-old Los Angeles-area boy said he committed suicide because he was threatened by a school official for participating in immigration protests. School officials disputed that.

Now, some rally organizers are telling people not to risk their jobs or education to attend the demonstrations and are considering rescheduling protests to weekends and evenings.

"This is a concern because this is a demographic of people who have historically not come out into the streets to raise an issue," said Germonique Jones, a spokeswoman for the Washington-based Center for Community Change, an umbrella group behind the rallies. "Obviously businesses have to be run, and it's only right for people to tell their employers that they will be out beforehand. ... We don't want people losing their jobs over this."

But many others say marchers want to make the sacrifice to show the importance of immigration reform.

In some cases, fired workers have been offered their jobs back after advocacy groups have gotten involved, including the 21 Detroit meatpacking company workers. The company said Thursday that it would rehire them, but only if the staffing company they were hired through can confirm they are legal immigrants.

Pedro Ortega, 30, was fired along with nine co-workers from an automotive parts factory in a suburb south of Chicago after attending a March 10 immigration march that drew more than 100,000 people.

A workers-rights organization got involved and negotiated with Cobra Metal Works Corp., which rehired the employees about a month later, he said. The company said in a statement it supports immigration reform and will allow workers to speak out as long as they follow company procedures for taking time off.

Ortega, who has worked at the factory for eight years, said attending the march was worth the repercussions, and he plans to attend another rally in Chicago scheduled for May 1.

"We have to change the way the American people think about us," Ortega said. "We are here to work and to make our lives better."

But in Phoenix, one of the organizers of a city's immigration march earlier this week, former state Sen. Alfredo Gutierrez, said a planned May 1 work and school boycott is generating little interest from many advocacy groups. He said participants are tired and have to return to work.

In Chicago, Rafael Pulido, a deejay on WOJO-FM who was instrumental in getting the word out about the city's huge March 10 rally, said he tells his listeners not to skip school.

"I am not in favor of students leaving schools to protest," said Pulido, who goes by the name "El Pistolero."

Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, which helped organize Monday's march in Atlanta, said while some businesses shut down to allow employees to participate, organizers stress that workers need to get permission to miss work and students should stay in school.

"The whole reason people are here is to work," Gonzalez said. "We need to do (protests) responsibly."

Other rally organizers say they plan to encourage people to participate in the May 1 boycotts and marches and said they will work with employers to ensure protesters will not be punished and to help fired workers find new jobs. Groups also are helping students, parents and schools prepare.

The Mexican-American Political Association, a central organizer of rallies in Southern California, is planning to send thousands of form letters to parents that they can use as school absence slips for their children.

"Parents have every right to keep their children home from school for personal reasons," said the association's president, Navito Lopez.

Others say while they recognize that some students and workers may not be able to attend weekday rallies, the marches are too important to hold them at night or on weekends, when fewer people will take notice.

"I think what all these sacrifices indicate is how critical this issue is for workers and students," said Tim Bell of the Chicago Workers Collaborative, the group that helped Ortega. "Workers want people to know how valuable their work is to the nation, and if they don't work, there is a huge effect on the country."

Doug.38PR says,

I prefer the state or federal officials to just go into Mexican/Hispanic neighborhoods and go door to door since Mexican other Hispanic illegals are the immediate problem here not other illegals.

Thanks Doug, I no longer think comparing the problem to what the Jews experienced in 1939 to be at all far-fetched.
If we do this, first we need to pass some laws against letting Hispanics own guns. That way our INS agents will be safe when they start breaking down doors.

Let the witch hunt begin!

I really don't see a big round up of illegals happening. It would be ridiculously expensive. Cheaper to fine the heck out of the employers. It would generate some capital to spend on vocational training programs, not welfare programs.

oh my god i think i have a better solution for those illegals hire in this country that want to become citizens of this beutiful country. quit being lazy and do it legally:mad:

Just my 3 cents

I didn't see one goddamned Canadian flag amongst the hundreds of thousands of protestors who took to the streets of every major American city last week. Plenty of Mexican flags, Guatemalan flags, El Salvadoran flags but not a maple leaf to be found. What about my sense of misplaced outrage and entitlement? What about my culture? My imagined inalienable rights? I demand the introduction of the word "eh" into the American lexicon. Also, the letter "U" should be inserted into the following words - Neighbor, color, and honor. I also demand that the letter "U" be taken out of the word U-haul for no particular reason. I demand that all major U.S breweries increase the alcohol content of their most popular brands (Ol'Milwaukee can stay as it is. Nobody cares except the homeless ).

If you don't give in to all of these demands I will label you an incorrigible racist and shame you into silence.

But seriously.......

As an immigrant myself, I know it may seem hypocritical but I view the current pro-immigration demonstrations taking place nationwide with much disdain. Partcularly because of the abundance of Mexican flags hoisted on high like so many self-righteous pinatas. Rule ..1 to would-be immigrants; if your country of origin is so utterly splendid and your pride in it so thick that you must shout to the world your attachment and allegiance, perhaps you should return to it and bestow upon it your invaluable talents. Sure, I'll have to mow my own lawn but that's a small price to pay to help make your third world hellhole a better place.

Butl let's talk about the average illegal Mexican guy selling a bag of oranges by the freeway off-ramp; in all seriousness I respect him as a human being, I respect his work ethic and his desire for a better life but once he hoists up the Mexican flag and joins a mob that is in all seriousness trying to convince people that America would collapse without people selling fruit at freeway off-ramps, I lose a little bit of that respect. I sincerely hope that congress passes a comprehensive immigration reform bill that allows unskilled and undocumented workers from all over the world, not just Mexico and central America, to gain temporary legal status and do the ****ty jobs that America's high school dropouts are too lazy to do. Keep in mind, people in other countries wait YEARS to come here legally playing by the rules. It's not their fault that they're not as conveniently located as Mexico.

Coming from Canada I can't possibly imagine what it's like to come from a country where the primary export is poverty and cocaine. At the same time, showing a little respect would go a long way. If I moved to France I'd learn French. At least try to learn english and relinquish some of that latino bravado that tells you that selling out to the gringos is akin to ethnic treason.

E Pluribus Unum - "From many...one". Not "From many....Mexico".

First off, this isn't about 'hispanics' per se. It is about 11 million or so ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS who just so happen to be hispanic. NOTE: ILLEGAL.

Secondly.....they ARE ILLEGAL. LAWBREAKERS. (should be FELONS) so why should be enact gun laws to keep them from having guns, when by definition, they shouldn't be able to own them in the first place.

And please, for the sake of this thread not getting locked for stupidity, please leve the jew and 1930's references at the door. You have mentioned it several times...it has NOTHING TO DO with this thread. And you seem to be looking behind every sentence waiting to scream RACISM! you sure you don't work for rev. jackson or al sharpton? ;)

In the context of the quote he used, it is purely about people being hispanics. Read the post it came from. No problems with other illegal aliens being here.

To TFL's own ILLEGAL aliens Croyance and Mthalo...

Too bad it's not up to me. If it was I would throw you and the rest of the ILLEGAL INVADERS over the 50 foot wall I would have built along the US/Mexican border. Your comparison to the Holocaust is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life. If we round up all the ILLEGALS and force them to dig their own graves and then gas and burn them then you may have a point, but seeing as our government is making laws to protect these ILLEGAL INVADERS as we speak, I highly doubt that will happen. These ILLEGAL ALIENS have invaded our country (what's the word I'm looking for???) ILLEGALLY!!! They march in our streets under constitutional rights that do not include or protect them. These ILLEGALS number into the millions. They mock our flag and our country and yet want all of the freedom and rights that come with being a citizen of the greatest country in the world. If these ILLEGALS do not like our current policies (which are already very very very leniant) then they can march right back across the border and disgrace their own country. In all honesty, this should be considered a major threat and be handled militarily.

All

The thing I find most interesting in this debate is the fact that those who have come here came because the place they are from was worse than where they now are.

Their homeland had no jobs for them.

Their currency is weak.

Their GNP/GDP sucks.

Their government and police are corrupt.

Their living conditions are abyssmal.

Yet when they get to a place of jobs, strong currency, strong GNP/GDP, strong government, and good living conditions they seek to bring that place down to the level of that which they left. They do nothing to raise up or improve their homeland.

I think that many Americans see this in the current events which are manifesting themselves throughout this country.

They may, however, change their tune at the urging of the Mexican government if this story is accurate. Note the facts stated in the next to last paragraph and then couple that with those noted in the last paragraph.

Legalizing Immigrants In U.S. May Hurt Mexican Economy

POSTED: 9:46 am EDT April 14, 2006

Email This Story | Print This Story

MEXICO CITY -- A proposal in the United States Congress to legalize millions of undocumented U.S. immigrants could hurt Mexico's economy.

So say some Mexican economists, who say the legislation could slash the amount of money the immigrants send home to Mexico.

They argue that Mexicans with permission to work in the United States will want to bring their families north to live with them. That would eliminate the main reason they send money home. That would hurt Mexican businesses that have come to depend on the money sent down from the United States.

Miguel Cervantes Jimenez is an economist at Mexico's National Autonomous University. He said remittances from U.S. immigrants could drop by as much as 40 percent.

He based his calculation in part on the situation in Turkey, where he said half the remittances disappeared in 2001. That's the year after Germany -- which is a prime destination for Turkish emigres -- passed a broad legalization law.

In 2005, U.S. immigrants sent home $39 billion. About half of that went to Mexico, where remittances are the second-largest source of foreign income after oil sales. In El Salvador and Guatemala, remittances represent the largest source of foreign revenue.

Savage, if that is the stupidest things you have heard in your life, you really don't read your own posts.

You only say "if it were up to you" because you are hiding behind a a blind connection. Let's be realistic, we all know you don't have the guts to do any of this face to face. So the false bravado is laughable.
If you honestly think I am here illegally, then come after me. As an insult this falls far short. I suppose it it more of a measure of your abilities than anything else.

As for your inability to read, look again. I did not make any Holocaust comparisons. In fact, I said we should kick out illegal immigrants. Look for a real quote where I said otherwise.
I differered from Doug in that I see all illegal immigration as a problem, see his way as being subject to obvious legal challenges, and that there is neither the budget nor manpower to do things his way.

Do you actually have a rational response to this, or more garbage spewing?

you sure you don't work for rev. jackson or al sharpton?

Derius_T,

Would I be using THAT comparison if I worked for either of those two? (Oy! ;))

What I'm trying to point out here is that comments such as "we need to start going door to door in Mexican neighborhoods to hunt down these illegals" is nothing short of idiotic, especially within a group that is supposed to be supportive constitutional rights.

And people, please don't rebut with comments like "illegal aliens are not subject to the constitution" unless you really believe that our government is capable of doing warrantless searches without trampling the rights of its citizens.

I'll keep it simple for those who having difficullties comprehending what I'm saying.
1) No this is not like the Holocaust, I just don't hold enough faith in the American people to believe that this situation couldn't easily go that way.
If anyone thinks that "can't happen here", then you need to study history. We put our own citzens in concentration camps during WWII.
2) I already know that illegal aliens aren't allowed to possess guns. I suggested banning guns first because that's something I thought you could understand.
Lets look at it another way, say congress bans semi-auto pistols, will you advocate going into neighborhoods that have a record of voting
Republican and start busting down doors? Witch hunts never turn out well.
3) Can anyone here prove that they have personally suffered
as the result of illegal immigration? If you have, please share your story.

Savage, if that is the one stupidest things you have heard in your life, I can only assume you are very young, and haven't been around long enough to have heard worse.

Keep your specious arguments. Only the Mexican government is aiding and abetting in what is a de facto invasion of the USA.

Croyance,

My "holocaust" comment was directed to mthalo. I will take fault for that because I should have been more clear. In regards to the "if it were up to me" it was strictly fantasy. This country is not a dictatorship and if it were I wouldn't be the Dictator. If I was, then rest assured you would be tossed (yes, physically tossed) over the border and back into mexico. "you dont have the guts to do any of this face to face"!  Who are you? The mexican Rambo? I highly doubt you could persuade me to change my mind face to face so it looks like the feeling is mutual. Next time try to rebuke with some actual facts.
And to mthalo, anyone in their right mind knows the holocaust comparison is completely ridiculous and no the situation could not easily go that way. Jewish prisoners did not march in the streets to protest while they were invading a country. They didn't do anything. They were taken from their homes and killed. They were poisoned with gas or shot and then they were burned, probably after digging their own grave. Grow up and get real. The day that happens in America is the day that we are invaded and taken prisoner (if that ever happens). We will have it done to us. We will be the bodies being burned.

Grow up and get real. The day that happens in America is the day that we are invaded and taken prisoner (if that ever happens).

Jewish prisoners had the same attitude as "this can't happen here, won't happen here" that you're taking. By the time they realized that yes, it was happening, it was too late to do much of anything. Family members of mine were murdered in the Holocaust, this "Never Again" is more than just a sound bite for me.

We have people already calling for hunting down illegal immigrants house to house. Some want to physicallly throw people over the border. Is that before or after building the 50 foot wall?
And somehow, sight unseen, I've been outed as an illegal alien.
Your comments are doing little to prove me wrong.

In other issues...
We're arresting people and detaining them as "enemy combatants" , without benefit of trial.
We're willing to give up freedoms in the name of safety, and patriotism.

I wish I could be as confident in the good of human nature as you, but unfortunately I've studied too much of human history to be willing to believe that Americans are not capable of the same things the Germans were, the Cambodians were, the Russians were, the Serbians were, and so on.

Thanks Doug, I no longer think comparing the problem to what the Jews experienced in 1939 to be at all far-fetched.
If we do this, first we need to pass some laws against letting Hispanics own guns. That way our INS agents will be safe when they start breaking down doors

That is absurd. I don't seem to recall typing anything about shipping them off to concentration camps to have them tortured, castrated, shoved into gas chambers and hot ovens and machine gunning them down as the "final solution." In this situation I am talking about finding and deporting them or even better making them spend jail time at hard labor before deporting them to deter them from turning around and swimming back across the border. I am also talking about Hispanic (who make up like 90% of the illegals and about 99.9% of the immigrant growth) illegal aliens not every Hispanic person in the United States.

Don't make inflammatory absurd statements like that.

mthalo...

who feels they need to prove you wrong? You have proven yourself wrong. You keep feeling the need to justify your claims because you know how far fetched they are. Is anyone else on here making claims that this is like the holocaust? This situation is nothing like the holocaust and I can assure you if it ever happens here the U.S. Citizens will be the equivalent to the innocent Jewish masses that were slaughtered for no reason. The fact of the matter is illegal aliens or illegal invaders (of any race or ethnicity) do not deserve to be here. We cannot and will not go door to door looking for illegals. Just because one person on TFL said we need to does not mean we have a U.S. holocaust on our hands. If someone is found to be an illegal they should be returned, no matter how long they have been here. If they are found a second time then they should serve a very long prison sentence and then be returned. We cannot continue to allow the invasion of our country. How dare these illegals disgrace our flag and our country and our rights in marches that they don't have the right to partake in.

Savage, you may be more right than you know. See: http://www.newswithviews.com/Devvy/kidd180.htm

The title "We've Got to Eliminate the Gringos" pretty much says it all.

I still say going door to door can be a solution. It alone won't solve the problem. This invasion mess has been around since the early 80s. It's a 20-25 year old mess and it's going to take time and effort and removing PC blinders to clean it up. If judges will issue warrants to for legal search and seizures then door to door can help. No you won't get them all but it is part of the solution. Putting the military along the border of America instead of Iraq is another solution. Local police and sheriff departments checking out suspicious people that they come into contact with, if they are in fact found out to be illegals then they should be held for breaking the law and taken through the proper legal procedures, not let go because they don't want to hurt crime fighting relations with the "hispanic community" Prosecuting people who hire illegal aliens. Putting sticter penalties on illegals when they are caught, not just possibly deporting them if your agency can get around to it. Denying them public benefits (or better yet doing away with public benefits) Not making them citizens if their children are born on our side of the Rio Grande. Not making them citizens if they marry an American. Telling the Mexican government to shut their third world hypocritical mouths up when they start screaming "racism" or "abuse" whenever we do so much as call illegals "illegals". If they don't shut up and stop telling us our business, then send the U.S. Military across to THEIR side of the Rio Grande and march into Mexico City a second time. Put them out of office and in jail and let the Mexican people elect people who will serve them and not persecute them into poverty across the border to take over our country (that last item is a little far fetched, but still, a figurative strike against the Mexican government is needed)

You are right, we have an invasion here. And desperate times breed desperate measures.
