The Walmart Ammo thread

My experience with Wal-Mart Lies

Last year, Wal-Mart put some guns up for sale at a marked-down price (15%), amoun which was a Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull. I observed from their price tag coding that they had had the gun in their sales counter for about 16 months. It was also scratched in several places and the rear sight's blade was broken off (right side). I offered $500 if they would have the rear sight replaced (just the blade, not the whole assembly). The manager on duty agreed and I paid for the gun.

I could not take the gun with me because of the rear sight and the fact that they had to send the gn to a gunsmith to have the firing mechanism restored (since Wal-Mart disables all their guns in the displays)

The next day, I got a call from another manager saying they would not repair the rear sight.

That is a violation of the contract, and if I had wanted to take them to court and make an issue of it I would have won. However, I offered to negotiate.

I went as high as the store manager and emailed the Wal-Mart headquarters of my complaint.

I never received any answer from Wal-Mart headquarters.

The local store manager made it pretty clear that he thought I had driven too hard a bargain and (in his opinion) did not deserve the price I got. They offered not even a token compensation, nor an apology or admission of wrongdoing. (They did have a sign up that said they would not do repairs, but nobody pointed that out until afterwards).

My conclusion is that this Wal-Mart is perfectly willing to doshonor on a binding contract. Sam Walton is rolling over in his grave.

On the other hand, they do have low prices. Just limitations on honest dealing.

In any general retail store, I do not expect the level of expertise I would expect in a specialty store. In Wal-Mart Sporting Goods or Auto Parts, I do not expect the expertise I expect from Sportsmen's Warehouse or NAPA Auto Parts. Nor from SW or NAPA the expertise I expect from REI or a Specialized Gun Store, nor the selection of goods. I am a realist in that area.

I have always wondered what people expect from Wal-Mart (or most any other retail store). They don't make ammo. They sell it. How much do you think they're going to know about it? When I buy ammo there I look to see what they have. If they have what I want, I ask for it. If they don't I don't. If they happen to hand me the wrong box, I say, "No, not that, the other stuff." The usual response is an apology and they get the right stuff. No problem. Certainly not enough to get my knickers in a knot over.

Same thing with the couple of guns I've bought there. Other than having the manager carry it to the door for me, it's been exactly the same as buying a gun anywhere. Well, at Gander Mountain they carry the gun out for me too. Big Deal. They carry the gun. I want to know why they won't carry that big bag of dog food for me too.

Good point.

Yeah -- try going into the automotive section in any big box store and asking for tune up advice, or detailed info on synthetic vs. regular oil. The people that work there stock shelves and check prices, they are not mechanics. The folks working in the food section aren't authorities on cooking either.

Now if you go to a butcher shop, or the locally owned car parts store, maybe you'll find a specialist... or maybe not.

I shop the two Walmarts near me for ammo on a regular basis. Very hit and miss. For a while they had Blazer Brass 9mm for $9 bucks and I bought 1000 rounds of that the minute I saw it, and then a few boxes here and there if they had any in stock. .45 was no where to be seen though until last week I found a bunch of Blazer Brass .45 for $13 bucks but they had a sign out limiting 3 per customer. I bought 3, and came back the next day and it was all gone! Yesterday I found that same Walmart again stocked with .45 BB and no sign limiting ammo, but they had an email from the corporate office taped to the glass case that basically stated due to the current political climate people are stocking up on ammo and the suppliers cant meet demand. It said that Walmart has standing orders with its distributors and instructed Store Managers NOT to try and order more than their normal allotment of ammo because there just isn't enough to go around as it is. I bought 4 boxes and talked with the Dept manager and asked why she had ammo, but the Walmart down the road (closer to my house) never had ammo. She said that was weird because they are on the same supply schedule and the trucks that deliver to her store, then go down the road to the other store and she knows they got ammo in this shipment. I quickly drove to the other Walmart and got there just in time to see a gentleman lugging two big bags of Blazer Brass away from the sporting goods counter (that explains why it is never there!) but he had left 2 boxes of .45 so I snatched those up and a box of 550 Remington .22lr.

I have a "Stash" of ammo, in excess of 1000 rounds per caliber, but I also shoot at least 100 rounds a week, my rainy day ammo wont last long at that pace so I have to scrounge to keep myself stocked in practice ammo and it is getting tough!

When I walk into a store, I have already made my mind up as to what I am there to purchase. All the store person is there to do for me, is to get what I ask for. I don't ask or need advice. So this kind of thread really leaves me puzzled as to what everybody expects from store employees ?

I was in walmart last night and swung by the sporting goods counter. No handgun ammo. No surprise either. Well I bought a box for my 30-06 and went about looking at the long guns they had on display. An older gentleman wearing a security uniform walked up to the counter (the attendant had left by this time) and looked disturbed to find no handgun ammo. He walked away and I went about looking through the firearms. He soon returned with an associate who was holdin a case (4 100ct boxes) of .45 wwb. Yes, he bought the whole thing. No, again, I wasnt surprised. Then he commented how he was down to 500 rounds and was about out. I am sitting on 113 rounds (13 of which are for hd/sd) and have been looking for ammo in this 2 gun store town. Too bad for me. I'll run out soon, have to make a long trip to get some and he is about to run out with his 1K rounds. I was slightly disgruntled and asked the associate to check for more ammunition prior to leaving the sporting goods area.

I was in Walmart yesterday purchasing some wiper blades and decided to check out at the sporting goods counter. Jokingly I asked the clerk if they had any .22lr in stock. He said as of today they changed their policy: No more than two boxes per day per customer. Every Sunday morning several gun store/range owners show up and buy every single round of pistol caliber that comes in the door. Every Sunday. I checked their ammo case and the sign was posted. Maybe now I'll get a chance at some ammo.

I stopped at Wal Mart yesterday and they had Blazer at $12.95 for 40 and then went to Gander. The same ammo was $39.95 for 40 rounds. I made comment to the gun dept mgr at Gander about the difference in price. His reply, "I suggest you buy at Wal Mart". Who said they are not ripping us off.

I find some if not most of these replies very rude. I work in wal mart sporting goods. I go to school also its not my life time job so don't start. Of the 5 or 6 of us that work back there 2 have no clue and guns and ammo, and when some one has a question they say in a nice manner left me get you someone that can help you. The other 4 or so of us dont know every thing their is to know, but one has sold traded hundreds of guns and reloaded hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo. My point there are some of use that can answer questions.
Most of the time when people ask if this will fit so and so gun, i ask what kind of shot gun or 22 it is (that what most people ask about) they have no clue. I get a its a 12 or 20 ga, and some guns if you don't know you should be allowed to have the gun, don't come in and ask do u guys sell stuff for ARs.
On the ammo situation we don't put out ammo when we feel like it we put out asap. The people getting ammo saved for them your lucky. I can get canned for saving ammo for anyone. OH and my favorite is do you guys sell ammo for me sks or my mossberg.
As every one is complaining I have one. 99% of people need to learn the proper way to do a gun form the legal way and not the half a%% gun show way, were u can leave lines blank not wright things the proper way. For example lbs or their birthday are rarely correct its 2 digit month 2 digit day and FOUR digit year. When i try to WITH a smile how to do it 90% of the time i get a very rude i have a handgun permit or i have done 100 of these. I do not care if you a carry permit i have one to and I have called in more NICS checks than the average person has filled out forms. My point more often than not its the customer that is rude or has no clue.

PS sorry for spelling errors. Being in a hurry and a just plane bad speller do not mix. lol

I finally got a hold of some ammo, I used to work at wal-mart a while back so I feel for you wal-mart employee's on here. Since I used to work there all the employee's in the sporting goods department have my number, well I got a call tonight from one of the employee's saying they got a case of 9mm in, so I bought what I could afford 500 rounds or 5 boxes of the wwb ammo. that should last me a couple of trips to the range or until I get a call that they got more in.

+1 for the working man. Life ain't perfect y'all, be a little more tolerant. If everybody else was a genius, think how stupid you would look.

I am willing to bet there are more than the 2 people that have added to this subject that works or has worked or has family that works for Wal Mart.

As for none of the people in Sporting Goods knowing anything. I know of more than one that has extensive knowledge of firearms.

Most of those that come on here and raise the biggest stink are like the guy who walked into a Wal Mart in Utah and wanted 300 Win mag ammo for his 300 Savage. They are both 30 caliber:eek: that is what he told the clerk. Or the several who would not believe that 357 Sig would not fit into there 357 revelover till they were shown the cartridge. The list of stupid customers goes on, The guy who dosen't know what caliber his gun is or how to find it even when shown on a new gun. Or the the guy who argues with the clerk over why he can not buy a hunting license when he hasn't been through Hunter Education, as required by STATE LAW!

Bottom line is this Wal Mart has not raised there prices like some of your favorite local gun shops, No they don't always have the most experienced people woking there but not everyone wants to work in Retail, with all of its problems. So if you don't like it don't shop there. Same reason I seldom, if ever walk into a Big 5.

This very morning I walked into the Walmart closest to my work and home. I frequent this Walmart often, so I run into the same employees often. They know I am a shooter. They also know that I buy ammo in bulk, as I have told them I share ammo finds with my shooting buddies, as they do with me. So as I approach the sporting goods counter, the clerk says Hi, what are you looking for today? Same as always, I say laughing 45, 9 and 223. The guy she is checking out has 5 (50) round boxes of CCI Blazer Brass 45. I obviously notice.;). She says "I have some 9mm but that was the last of the 45." I say ok, how much 9 do you have? She counts and says 10 boxes. Ok, I'll take them, I say. ($8.97 50 round boxes of Blazer Brass.)
While she is ringing them up, I glance down behind the counter at some boxes of ammo, mostly shotgun shells and notice a box that says CCI 45 Auto.

I say..."Hey, is that 45 ACP?" She looks at it and says "why, yes it is!" Turns out it was 1000 rounds of 45 ACP Blazer Brass. ($14.97 per 50) Guess what I did? Think she was holding out on me?

Depends

Depends on the store. The Walmart where I buy ammo has a nice lady who works at the ammo/gun counter. She is always courteous and helpful.
The Walmart in Providence,RI doesn't carry guns or ammo-they won't say so directly, but the mayor probably pressured them to do this, because he is a miserable gun hating human pus pimple. He also has a de facto sanctuary city for illegal aliens.:barf:

The local Wal Marts here in Northern Virgina are going the route of "3 boxes" per customer. When I went in the other day I was with my wife and we were able to purchase the 4 remaining boxes of Blazer 9mm with both of us purchasing 2 boxes. I was looking for .22 as well, but they didn't have anthing on the shelf at the time. I'm not sure if the 3 box limit is per caliber or per customer?

Been in and out of two different Walmart's for a few weeks now. Yesterday I asked and the clerk said he hadn't seen any .22 for over a week. Had to go over this morning and was able to buy three boxes of 550. I'm set for a good long time now, I have five boxes of those!!

To me it seems to be getting better and better. I have been able to pick up 9mm WWB at my wally world about everytime there (300 rounds last night). This is in a decent sized city mind you.

Had a funny experience at Joe's (formerly GI Joe's, now going out of business). They kept getting a few boxes of .460 SW in every week. Seemed to be about 2 boxes - 40 rounds. I was in the brass collecting mode, and getting used to my new pistol, so I would stop in and check every time I went by. If they had some I bought it.

All of a sudden, they stop having it. I asked the guy at the counter, who went and got the department manager. Manager says they are not going to get anymore. He could not give a reason, even when I pointed out they had sold every box they ever got in at $30+/per box. Just said they were not going to stock it anymore.

Still having a seriously hard time finding any handgun ammo at Wally World in 4 stores closest to me. Managed to snag the last box of 45 ACP Blazer Brass from a Wally World just over the border in NH, for a buddy who just bought a S&W M&P and only had 50 rounds to break it in. When I asked the clerk at Wally World for the box he just looked at me in utter amazement that their was still a box on the shelf. The only handgun ammo that I usually see left on the shelf is 44 Rem Mag, and 357 Sig, occasionally 357 Mag., and some 45 ACP in shotshells.
