The Walmart Ammo thread

Was at a local WM yesterday and they had .22, 9mm and .45 ACP. They have a 6 box limit. I bought some .45 and 9mm.

My Walmart in Vegas finally put the 6 box limit in place. I saw a person buy 10 cases of WWB 9mm last weak, of course I bought a few my self, but I shoot a lot. But 10?

My local Walmarts have run out of .22LR and have been out of it for more than 3 weeks.

.38 special is impossible to find anymore.

However, we do have plenty of 9MM and .40 cal

I have also had a pleasant experience with Wal-mart. Of course I get usually older fellows (luckily I guess) who know at least a fair amount about firearms/ammo. All I typically have to do is point, say "that .45 Auto Winchester Value Pack" and when he points to it say "yup thats what I want." Not too complicated. Of course I don't go to Walmart for research or advice on firearms/ammo. If you do go to Walmart seeking advice you are already below the curve. I have never had a bad sale or sour experience buying firearms or ammo at Wal-mart, though I would rather buy my ammo online...

Until recently, we could get WWB 9mm and 45acp fairly regularly. In recent weeks, its all dried up. Stopped by the local Wally World twice last week and there was no 9mm, no 45acp, no 38spl and very little 22lr of any kind. Went to Academy Sports (always a little more expensive) and it was the exact same story, except that the only 22lr they had was a 10 lifetimes supply of 22lr birdshot.

I don't have any problem with Walmart. The stores in my area tend to be out of pretty much all popular handgun loads, but it's not because they're not getting any shipments - it's because the day the shipments come in, they sell out.

The mantra from the sporting goods clerks is to call early and call often. The general trend is that the shipment will hit the floor around noon on the day that it arrives, then a few people will buy 75 or 80% of the ammunition. By 6:00, it's all gone. I usually call around 11:00 to see if they've received a shipment, then head over on my lunch hour to grab a box or two of whatever I'm low on. So far that works for me.

Cabela's is about the same. They went through 1400 boxes of Federal .22 bulk packs in a couple of days. It just doesn't last when a few people decide that they need a hundred boxes. I may be cynical, but judging from what I see on Gunbroker (and, every now and then TFL classifieds), there's a good resale market for that sort of thing.

Been calling my local WM for a few days, today they said they expect a truck with "a bunch" of 9mm and other rounds tonight at 9-9:30. This is outside Cincinnati, definitely a good sign. Tired of paying $17.22/box at the local indoor range.

I was able to pick up 5 boxes of WWB last night for $19.97/box. They had plenty more rolling off the truck. They also had .45 Auto that I saw and 190 cases of Blazer 9mm coming in. They fully expected to have ammo all day today. May not be what you want, but at least it's coming.

I managed to get 250 pack of UMC 9mm and 4 Monarch Brass 9mm at Academy. Got there when they opened today. That was the limit.

Also, got a 525 round box of Remington HP 22 LR.

Bring on the zombies.

Went to Cal Ranch Stores and Wal-Mart. CAL was out of most everything except .40 and they only had about 10 boxes.

Wal-Mart is usually a good place to go, so when I was there picking up some 20g and 12g shells, I stopped and talked to Bob, the department manager. He told me ha was supposed to get some in tonight. We looked at the order sheet and he ordered everything under the sun, but was only getting some 9mm, .40 and .22lr.

He said he wasn't carrying 45-70 or 45LC anymore. He said one of the local cowboy shooters had ordered 10 cases of 45LC and not come in to pick it up and they got stuck with it. They ended up putting it on clearance to get rid of it. What a Schmuck! He did say that if I wanted some 45LC he could order it, but I would have to buy 6 cases and pay up front. I wanted 45-70 for this weekend, but both places were out. I will have to check the local gun shop.

This hoarding thing is starting to bug me. especially .22LR. That is the only thing I can plink with in the back yard.

Like I said before, like bad Chinese food, this too shall pass.

Oh, Bob told me that Federal was sitting on a crap load of completed rounds waiting for the next good price hike. Anyone have any info on this? Because if it is true, I may just stop buying Federal.

Not bad...

Went to WW today at 7AM.

They had 12 cases of WWB 9mm, some cases of 45, and 38 special. Tons of 12 gauge.

I was the first one there - too bad they have a 6 box limit, as I wanted to pick up a case.

Got my 6 9mm Value Packs, called them at noon - all out

By my math, 20 or so different people went in and bought 6 each of 9mm. Probably it was less than that, and one guy got his wife/grandma/local drunk to buy 6 each as well.

Limiting Ammo

I've been trying to find ammo at . . . . well . . . . any sporting goods store including Wal-mart. I found 100rds of Winchester fmj 45 for $30. I would have got more if I had the money. They told me at the counter that they have people coming in and buying as much as they can get their hands on & are selling it at higher prices to others but they started limiting how much they can buy now to stop it. The employees were getting mad that these people are greedy and taking advantage of others. I kinda like it in a way. Keeps it available to others but at the same time, this is America & I don't like being limited buy how much you can buy either. It's a catch 22.

Our Wally World here doesn't have .45 or 9mm ammo, comes in and is gone in a day. That's the only complaint I have. We have a four box limit on pistol ammo. These tales of people buying to resell would explain a lot.Other than that the people behind the counter are nice and fairly competent. I do have to check to make sure my .223 Remington is FMJ and not JHP as has happened a few times. Other than that it is a great place to get ammo.

I posted this in another thread before I saw this one.

Went into Walmart tonight to by a dog collar. Moseyed on over to the hunting dept., just to see what was what. Saw the ammunition case looking like a starving, well starving. There was a man there talking to a female employee and saying "It is clear you do not have what I need." After he left I noticed that the ONLY thing they had in the case were some misc. rifle rounds and shotgun ammo.
I asked her what was going on (I knew), she said the manufacturers are working 24/7 to meet demand. I asked why (I knew but wanted to see what Walmart would say) she said that Obama wants to heavily tax firearms and ammunition, but that it will be two years before it goes into affect. So everyone is buying up ammo faster than the manufacturers can make it.

First I never heard Obama had publicly said anything about heavily taxing ammo.
Second I am just repeating what I heard in a mosy.

Wat?

she said that Obama wants to heavily tax firearms and ammunition, but that it will be two years before it goes into affect.

And SHE probably heard that from a customer, who read it on the internet.

Another Walmart story

One Walmart employee said that ONE person bought $1,400 worth of handgun ammunition! Shelves have been conspicuously emply of pistol ammo at local Walmarts week after week, except for a couple of boxes of .357 Sig ammo. (Gee, thanks a lot!)

Another Walmart Experience

Last night my wife and I went to Walmart to do a bit of shopping. I've always shopped there for my target ammo because it was the cheapest. I walked over to the sporting goods department to see if they had any .22 lr for a newly purchased Walter PPK/S .22. I was shocked! They had four boxes of centerfire pistol ammo. Two 9mm, one 40 S&W and one .357 Sig. Holy cow! When I asked the salesman if he had any MiniMags he said four boxes. I was afraid that by the time I found my wife and got the credit card from her that they'd be gone. I got back within five minutes and there was another person waiting at the counter looking for ammo. He had just came from BiMart and said that Walmart's selection was better. When talking to the salesman he said they had received six boxes of MinMags - SIX BOXES. I sort of felt bad buying those 400 rounds at $6.47 a box. When is this going to be over? Who'd ever thought that you wouldn't be able to find .22 ammo for sale.
