The Walmart Ammo thread

x2 on the bulk target load shotgun shells being available. Holy cow. One of the aisles at my closest Wal-Mart is half filled with shotgun ammo. $4.67 for a box of shells. I'm making it a habit of buying a box or two everytime I go in there which is around twice a week.

I just picked up some buckshot ($5.47 a box) and slugs ($3.67 a box) today since it's getting a little harder to find those now. The gun shop I frequent has HG ammo in stock, but they are having trouble keeping buckshot in and when they do have it, it's $9 for a box of 5. I'll pay $.05 a round more for 9mm, but I refuse to pay an extra $1 per round for buckshot.

Here in Northern Virginia I stopped by a Wal-Mart on my way home from work last Friday and must have arrived at the right time. They had 50+ boxes of Blazer Brass 9mm and 11 boxes of 9mm WWB 100 count. They limit to 3 boxes of ammo per customer on all calibers. Luckily I was with my wife and we were each able to pick up 3 boxes. Part of me felt guilty for it, but with the price of ammo the way it currently stand, I was excited to go home with 150 round of Blazer Brass ($8.97 a box) and 300 rounds of WWB ($19.97 a box). We both use the ammo for practice and can easily go through that during a weekend.

I have a good friend that works for Wally world's distributin center that has given me some insight into what has been going on wiht ammo. Notice was sent to all stores in the area that this one delivers to. The message was that due to rapid increase in demand, and lack of available stock to fill all demand that the stores would not be placing orders on pistol and high demand rifle calibers. The dist. center would send and equal amout to all stores, as soon as it could be loaded.
He says that when ammo comes into the distribution center the pallets are taken down, it is counted then divided up to be shipped and loaded onto the tucks leaving out to make deliveries. He says this is the first time in his 12 years of working there that he has seen an item not even leave the recieving dock to go to slots in the ware house. It literaly is going from one truck to another without ever being in the warehouse longer than it takes to break down pallet wrap, and divde, then load onto the outgoing trucks. Longest any has sat in the warehouse since Jan. has been 12 hours while waithing for a truck delivering to outlying stores.

Perfect Timing

The fiance and I stopped into the local Wally World yesterday evening, and I went back to the gun section just to get a few cleaning supplies and the guy was stocking the ammo that had just came in that day.

He had 8 boxes of 9mm Blazer, so I bought 4. He also had quite a bit of .40 in but I didnt need any of that. No .380 though otherwise I pry woulda bought it and sold it to someone who needed it.

45&9mm

Finally managed to snag 6 boxes of WWB 9mm from Wally World this morning. Called one of my local stores about 30 minutes away. They told me they had 7 boxes of 9mm in. When I arrived they had 9 boxes of 9mm 2 boxes of 40S&W, 1 box of 357Sig, and nothing for 45. Since I am completely out of practice ammo, I picked up the 6 box limit of 9mm at $20.97 a box. Shouldn't have to buy any more this summer. :)

the local wm here in SE NC had some in for the first time in what seems like months. Had a little WWB 40 and 357 sig. I bought 1 45 acp value pack (@$31.97).

I have 2 wally worlds within close proximity and I USED to shop for ammo at either of them.
Now due to the lack of availability at those stores I search and shop online.
As far as advice goes, never at a Walmart and never at a gun shop.
In my experience here in Fla and when I lived in North Carolina, is similar;
Just because someone works in a gun shop doesn't necessarily mean they are all knowing about guns or ammo.
I hear all kinds of mis-information at my local shops.
Like others have posted in this thread, the best place for information is right here on the net, on forums just like this one.
When I was a kid the way to have a knowledge data base was owning a complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica which my mom couldn't afford to buy for me, so I was S.O.L.
Now we all have the "net".
Good times my brothers, good times.
Regards,
Jon

very true... but are you finding any FMJ online? walmart is still the place to get it if you can find it. i mean.. i dont need to ask joe blow about blazer brass or wwb. i know its gonna work.

"but are you finding any FMJ online?"

Yes and I recently purchased 10 boxes.
Fiocchi, not my first choice but not a bad find.
I'm finding other calibers as well sporadically.
As the saying goes, even a blind pig finds an acorn every once in a while.

One box limit!

The Walmart on Turkey Lake Road here in Orlando just posted a sign that limits ammo sales to ONE BOX...PERIOD!

Was visiting in Woodstock VA yesterday, hit the local Wallyworld just to assess the situation. The guy at the ammo counter said all they had in pistol ammo was a couple boxes of .40, and not even any bulk .22. Grinned and allowed as how Obama was a heckuva salesman.

So I got 700 rounds yesterday :)

I stopped in to my local wally world yesterday and asked if they had gotten any ammo in that day. He said they were unloading the truck, and he thought they had a case of 9mm Win. 100 rd value packs. So I went to my buddys place, had a beer, went back and sure enough they had 1 case of it. I bought my 6 boxes, and had my buddy get one more for me.

I have been gettin lucky lately.....maybe I should go buy a lotto ticket :)

Congrats! The store near me is completely cleaned out.

I also like to check the stock at Meijer when I get groceries. Every time, they have this one lonely box of 223 and 5 boxes of 40, untouched week after week. Plenty of shotgun shells though.

I haven't noticed nearly as much of an ammo shortage around here as I've read about elsewhere, and our local Wal-Mart usually has a fair bit in stock for rifle and shotgun. Handgun ammo, on the other hand, is not so good. I went in today and picked up a couple 100 packs of Remington 12ga. target loads, a couple "Slugger" 15 shell value packs, and some CCI .22 cartridges. They were totally out of any and all buckshot though, which was one of the reasons I went in there (12ga 00). The young girl working the counter (had to pull her out of electronics...) did say they have been having a hard time keeping the shelves stocked. She was plenty nice enough, but freely admitted to knowing next to nothing about sporting goods.

I never bother asking anybody in the store anything. At all. Most are either high school kids or retirees and either way, they're part-time minimum wagers. You get what you pay for, and as an ex-employee (I was in HS), I can say the "associates" get no training whatsoever aside from how to run the registers and recite the "Wal-Mart Cheer." <shudders>:barf: I'd go to a local place if there was one left, but W-M drove our only local gun and tackle shop out of business years ago. The nearest local place now is about 30 minutes away, has terrible prices, the selection is not good, there's only room for about 2 customers in the store at once, and the crotchety owner gets an attitude if his bowels are bothering him that day (there's gotta be some reason for it). After that, I'm looking at an hour and a half to get to Gander Mountain.

I'd have to agree that the best place by far to seek advice or research something is the internet. Gun shops, automotive parts stores, hardware stores, whatever, it seems like most people just don't know what you're talking about when you ask them a question. I usually don't waste my time and energy anymore.

EDIT: BTW, what are the best places to shop for ammo online? I've looked at a few, but it gets pricey with shipping.

I was in there last night and the only handgun ammo there was .357 Sig, and .44 Mag. They did have a decent selection of rifle and shotgun ammo.

This is pretty funny - after making my normal call to my local WM last week and finding their truck to be empty of ammo again, I broadened my search. I had a new 1911 coming in last week and *needed* .45 bad. So I called WMs that were a little further away. Finally got one that was "receiving all sorts of ammo...9mm, 45, 40, 357 and more." So I head out there and site for an hour while they get to it on the truck. Gun counter guy comes out with a big cart full of stuff and carries an open box over to the counter. I assume it's the .45 since that's what I told him I needed. Well, it was, along with 6 other boxes of ammo for their total load of 9 assorted boxes of ammo. I bought all the .45 and the 2 boxes of Blazer 9, leaving some lucky guy to land the rest, LOL. What a joke, why even other sending that out? It worked for me, but I was just lucky to be first in line.

My WM had a few .45s, 40s and about 10 BB 9mm.

That was the first time for a long time I saw 45s. But still no .380.

I'm starting to think nobody is making .380s. Maybe I should sell my box of .380s sense I don't own one. Maybe not.
