last box i got (about 2 weeks ago) was 12 bucks for winchester 115 grain fmj target/range 100 round value pack
they may have changed the price i buy ammo when i can afford to the few extra bucks

American Eagle:
I have to agree with much your opening post here.
The employees working the ammo desk are not expected to know
much about the products other than where they are in that section.
They may be part time help as well.
Some are nice some are not, it can depend on the overall store attitude.
Be nice and they sometimes get nice.

what no one has managed to point out is that no one goes to walmart to buy something because the person there knows what there talking about you go there because its alot cheaper then anywhere else most of the time
if you have a question about a tv go to best buy ask away and then go buy it at a walmart

You're joking, right? You actually think there is someone at Best Buy that is technically educated enough to know what he/she is talking about?

the people at best buy are usually pretty informed. I always do research on my own before I go out and buy something. I wanted a new camera and I looked up what I wanted, and figured out the make and model. I went to best buy and i discussed it with the employee. they knew all about the stuff.

Why would you waste a knowledgable person's time at one place and buy it from the uninformed at another?

Because it's cheaper. It's the american way! :D

(Although I haven't met very many people at any big box store that know what the hell they're talking about. Don't get me wrong, they do exist...just few and far between)

As far as the WalMart manager who is holding back all the ammo...they will probably get fired if found out, although this type of stuff happens ALL the time at department stores. The other day, I overheard some people that worked at k-mart talking about all the stuff they had stashed that they were gonna sell on Ebay.

Quit your WHINNING!

I would like to see those who complain about the help or lack thereof that they get not only at Wal Mart but anyother store get off backsides and apply for work at those stores. Most of you won't take the pay cut.

I personally have played a game I call Stump the Dummy and I have found far more Dummies at the gun range than behind the counter in any Sporting Goods Store! I have found it great fun to ask someone the distance to a far wall and have them rattle off some unreal number like 200 or 300 yards. Hand them a rangefinder and find it to be under 150 Yards:)

I love the customer that comes in and is in there mid 40's to 50's and buys bullets and then get mad that it is not loaded ammunition, even after they are told it is not loaded.

If you are so concerned about getting excellent information LOOK IT UP! No Sales person at any store can know all the answers to some of the dumb questions people come up with. I personally have had customers come in and want any 30 caliber ammunition cause it will fit their Win Mag, dosen't matter it is all 30 caliber. I have heard this far more times than I care to think about.

Have a great day and remember that Wal Mart has not followed the lead of many of the other stores and Jacked up the prices on there Ammunition.

the guy who works at the Dick's near me actually owns a Ghillie suit and hunts in it. He likes to hunt deer and only likes to take the shot at close range, so he works on stalking skills constantly.

Still, he can out-shoot me on the 300 yard range any day of the week.

He's the kind of guy you'd take advice from even if he didn't work there.

I realize not everyone has that, though...

The walmart employees, I'm only concerned with them having 1 skill. That is inserting the key in the lock on the glass display case, unlocking it and giving me my ammo. I tell them thank you and I'm on my way.

went to buy my 40's today (at walmart) and the guy told me - we decided yesterday that we can only sell 2 boxes per customer. my wife is so great, she is like, dont we count as separate customers? You would have thought she asked a quantum physics question. The guy was dumbfounded. I said hey, whatever, I will come back tomorrow. I mean there might not have been any if they didnt have that rule. I also tried to split the last 4 boxes with another guy last time i was there, but he wasnt interested, he said he would come back tomorrow.
I dont know, I guess it was God at the time because later I was really mad; why didnt I try my wife's trick - WHY WONT THEY SELL ME MORE. MORE, GIVE ME MORE. The ammo thing is just crazy. But I guess in the end I am OK with it. I will be back tomorrow for sure. And if they were as strict with others, my two boxes will be there.
Does make me think though, everytime I return 15 bucks of stuff I spend another 30 or 40 at walmart. so i will keep my head down and head for the ammo counter - well maybe some hoppes#9 - argh!

No bad experiences for my friends and I, employees at the Wal-Marts in my area are friendly and know what we need when they see us. Gun conversation is kept to a minimum since they know all we want is the ammo.

depends which wal mart we go to around here. the ones in the shadier parts of town always seem to have the stuff i want. its kinda weird.... but also have to go befroe 11 PM when they close the gun counter. couple of the other ones have win super X slugs in the 15 shell boxes out and about for a anyone to grab 24/7 i gotta about 15 of those boxes right now and plan on gettign mroe in the coming months. also want to pick up another 500 or sao rounds of.45. as far as bulk rifle ammo i get .223 at the local gun shows.

No problems at the local WalMart. there thet hire mostly retired people. Got one box each of .32, 38, and 357. Also 4 boxes CCI .22. he seemed pretty knolegable for the reasons we are buying... the Dems

I don't do much in the way of shopping for shooting supplies at Wally World other than the really basic stuff (paper targets and the likes) and ammo. The only annoying part is when the person behind the counter hands you the totally wrong ammo. I'm always nice to them, and point to exactly the box I want if the person seems a little lost.

If I was working at Wal Mart in the electronics/car/sewing/home improvement sections I would probably sound like a total idiot when people asked for stuff (What's an allen wrench and what does it do?).

If it's not their hobby I can't expect them to know all of the minor details. A box of.45 ACP sounds and looks a whole lot like .45 Colt. It's like the difference between eggshell and off-white. They look the same to me, but to Vera Wang there's a world of difference.

Ditto!

Although the guy usually likes to talk about his (Carry) Glock 26, and has no interest in what I have, a 627 V-Comp or other cool guns I have.:D

Well, I had posted a response to this thread and something must have happened and well, it is not here. So I will just post some thoughts now.

First of all, thank you American Eagle for your positive comments. With regard to your dealer problems, if you ask them to order it for you they will, or at least ask them what day it comes in and ask when the "Through the freight".

My wife is the department manager for our local Wal-Mart in the Hardware Department. She has to assist in Sporting Goods and toys and well, anywhere else they need help. Not all the employees are experts though some are. Those that are truely experts will not be working in Wal-Mart since the specialty shops are more atractive to those people. Sometimes they pay the same or less, but because of the atmosphere the true experts will work in a specialty shop.

Wal-Mart is not perfect, but they do have a good selection of products at a good price. Besides when you are on top everyone wants to take shots at you. Look at Sears when they were on top. Heck when I owned my computer store, we were on top after a few years and everyone wanted to be like us. Heck that is still happening for our store since we sold it.

So, if you are nice to a store employee no matter what store it is, they will do the best they can for you.

The great thing about sites like this one and the others that I belong to, is you can vent safely here about negative situations and even mention the good ones too.

Mel:cool:
