The #1 reason you carry the semi/wheel gun you do

#1. SA XD40 Subcompact in IWB holster. Sometimes tucked, sometimes not. Reliable and plenty of power for SD.
#2. LCP is a DeSantis Superfly pocket holster. The gun you carry when you can't carry a gun!

I live in Wisconsin so the most potent thing I'm allowed to carry is my Boy Scouts pocket knife.

When and if we do get CCW in the Peoples Republic of Wisconsin, I have an LCR that slips into my pockets perfectly and goes boom every time.

S&W 649 with stubby grip for summer carry... small, but heavy enough to be manageable (but certainly not comfortable) with .357 loads. I can alternate with my .380 PPK/S now that I finally got an IWB holster for it... might catch some flak for choosing such a big .380, but I like the weight and handling (my skinny boy hands fit comfortably even with the flat magazine base plates).

If the weather's cool enough for a jacket... then it's the 3" SP101, the S&W 908S, or the Colt Commander.

Of course, that's only when I'm not here in the DPRNJ...

Of my four most carried guns:

S&W 629 .44 Magnum with 4" barrel- the most powerful gun that I can get in a package that is still practical for carry. This gun is carried almost exclusively in colder weather.

S&W M66 .357 Magnum with 2 1/2" barrel- the best balance of power, size, reliability (particularly a contact shot), and shootability that I can find in a compact belt gun. This gun is carried primarily in warm weather.

S&W M36 .38 Special with 1 7/8" barrel- The best balance of power, size, reliability, and shootability that I can find in a pocket gun. This gun is carried as a deep concealment or "grab it for a quick run to the grocery store" gun.

S&W 1076 10mm Auto- The most power I can get in a semi-automatic that is still practical to carry. This gun is not carried nearly as much as the other three and is only carried in cold weather.

Really, it's difficult to pin down any one particular reason that I carry a specific gun. None of my carry guns really do any one thing better than anything else could. For me, however, they do offer the best balance for their intended purposes.

My three carry guns:

1) Glock 36 .45ACP.
Light, reasonable capacity (7)
good caliber

2) Smith 36 .38 Spl. (carry +P)
light, little smaller than the G36
Caliber & capacity OK.

3) Ruger Speed Six .357 mag. 2-3/4".
No light weight but great caliber with (6) capacity.

I used to carry my Kahr PM 45 it was nice and light, and fit me well when I was either personally holstering or handbagging. Now I switched to a Kimber Ultra CDP II for the smoother surfaces when holstering, it is much more comfortable. :p

In 'non jacket weather' I usually carry the Ruger Sp101 3 inch in .357 mag. However, it is always loaded with .38 spl +p hornady sd loads. I shoot them better, follow ups are faster, and they don't make that .357 BOOM....

In jacket weather, I dearly love the Kimber Compact II in SS. It fits my hand well and I love the SA trigger pull.

I carry my Glock 30 because its the smallest, lightest, highest capacity, most resilent material .45 I could find. I'm not knocking any other CC guns, or being a Glock fan... It's just reality. That being said I am looking into carrying a .357 revolver because I just like the way they look and feel.

Keep an eye out for a Ruger Speed Six 2-3/4" .357 (6 shot) mag. If you find one in good shape you won't regret buying. They are a little heavy, but a good holster can solve that issue.

XD9 - Because it had the most to offer in features I wanted in a firearm that is reliable and I shoot it well. Sorry for the run-on.

"To get chicks of course."

I think you're right. I need to reconsider my objection to pocket carrying a Glock.

Agree. I forgot to add my XD9 to my carry list. My XD9 with 15 rounds loaded is a great carry gun. Light, accurate, reliable.

Isn't it 16+1??

No. Mine is 15+1

PS. I checked and the new mags are 16 rounds. Mine is an older model that came with the 10 round mags. I then purchased the 15 round mags made by Springfield later.

If the truth were told, many times it's because that's what the person read in a gun magazine, internet forum, movie, etc. The gun shows are full of "hard core" guys with 1911's under their Banana Republic vests because "that's what the pros do it".*

*This isn't a slam on 1911's

Familiarity breeds comfort.

While I'm still considering heavily buying a G36 for my new EDC right now the #1 reason I carry my Kimber Custom II full sized 1911 is because I know that thing like the back of my hand.

In the two years I've owned it I've fired over 1,500 rounds through it. Before then my buddy had it, I purchased it from him. Over the year that he had it I had shot more than 500 rounds with it. This is all discounting the .22 conversion kit my buddy has for his Gold Match that I have slapped on my Custom II a couple of times.

One of the biggest problems I hear of carrying a 1911 is the safty and having to keep it cocked and locked, it's a non-issue for me. I purposefully do drills in which I cock the hammer, flip the safty on, put the gun at rest and then bring it up, take the safty off and fire. Now it's second nature to rest my dominant thumb on the safty and ride it like that.

Second reason would have to be reliability, all that shooting and I've only had three or four stovepipe jams.

I carry a G36 daily. I do have a full size 1911, the only reason I don't carry it is weight. I know others are OK with a full size 1911 all day, but not me. It's about 24 oz. compared to 42 oz.
