So, how many carry doing yard work?

I don't even carry a wallet when mowing the yard. So far, I don't need a license or permit to operate a gasoline powered lawn mower.

If I lived in an area where I thought the prudent thing to do was to carry my gun while doing yard work on my own property - I'd get the hell out.

It's very easy to say this, now. How would you feel if a home invasion occurred in your neighborhood?

You're out in your yard minding your own business, when an unknown car suddenly drives up your driveway. What do you do?

I'm in and out of my house many times during the day. If I'm outside and working around the property I always have my LCP in my back pocket.

Better to be prepared, than not.

dajowi,

"Unless you live in a heavily guarded/gated communtiy, you better start packing your boxes."

Ha! This is the kind of place you move to to avoid crime. According to City-Data.com between 1999 - 2009 there was 1 murder in our city. Between 1999-2008 there were 6 murders committed in the entire county.

You are down,he grabs your wallet AND your gun too?

Maybe carrying isn't such a hot idea

I guess you could say that about carrying anywhere, eh?

Well WA might just be on to something (in a tactical sense). My bet is that it is easier to approach someone who mowing grass from behind ...and do it unnoticed... because they are less likely to hear someone approach due to the noise of the mower.

Guys, not to brag or anything, but if I'm dressed, I'm carrying. I don't carry a gun in order to find trouble- I carry becaue trouble MIGHT find me! Sorry 'bout the yellin' and all, but threads like this are exactly what the anti-gunners want to hear, so they can make prepared people seem paranoid and violent. Now that's something to think about!

Obambulate
Actually, that's one of the times I feel my home is most vulnerable. You have the man of the house outside walking behind a loud engine, in a predictable pattern. Typically, one or more doors are unlocked and the garage door may be wide open.

Attackers could run up behind me and I wouldn't hear them. They could be inside the house as soon as I swing the mower out of sight. And anyone inside would be partially deafened by the mower and could be overwhelmed before they are aware of the invasion. Also if you keep loaded weapons near the door, the invaders will arm themselves if they weren't already armed.

This is why we carry around the property, have our keys on us, keep the house doors locked, keep the cars locked, and garage door closed when we are out and about doing yard work. The last thing either of us want is to be surprised when we come back inside. In the event that I forget to lock the door when we are in the yard, I perform a quick clearing of the house. Sounds like it's too much? Maybe, but we really would like to make it well into our 80's unscathed by evil.

As for keeping loaded firearms near the door, hide them (unless you have kids who aren't trained with firearms).

Well WA might be on to something(in a tactical sense).

In a 'tactical sense' you could take most any scenario when cc'ing and inject elements into the scenario that would make it not tactical to cc.

IE. Every time you leave your house cc'ing to go anywhere, are you 100% sure there's not a perp thats going to be in your house when you get home that will knock you in the head and take your gun?....
...or just saw this on the news the other day also...
...guy walks into a McDonalds and is standing at the counter ordering his food. With no forewarning at all, a young punk standing next to him blasts the poor guy in the side of the head knocking him down.

IMO, Bottom line is whether cc'ing or not its imperative to pay attention of our surroundings the best we can. But it doesn't matter how careful we are there are always going to be times when we're more vulnerable then others.

Some go through life with the 'It won't happen to me' or It won't happen here' attitude. Thats great and hopefully IT never does.

I live out in the country. Crime is very low here. Statistically speaking, my chances of something bad happening is much lower then around one of the big cities, but I don't let my guard down.

Maybe its cause of what I've seen when I was younger living in some very bad areas. Maybe its cause I've got family that are in LE that keep me abreast of bad things that are going on and telling me about crime scenes they've been to where the residents seem to sing in harmony " Nothing like this ever happens around here"...
...which incidently was the topic of one of the conversation's I had with one of them(LE relative) a couple weeks ago.

His advice to these people is:
'most crimes are crimes of opportunity, it doesn't matter where the residence is at, if a perp see's the chance to do what his MO is, he's going to do it'.

He's also seen a rise in broad daylight home invasions in area's that normally don't see alot of crime. Why? Can't say for sure but more than likely cause the perps know the people in these areas tend to let their guard down, doing things such as leaving doors unlocked, etc.
Again, feeling to secure of their surroundings cause, "that just doesn't happen around here".

Sorry about the thread veer.

Yes, I carry when mowing lawn.

If your jusridiction has gotten so bad that you gots to pack while mowing the lawn, or doing houseclear drills if you leave a door unlocked for 5 minutes, or have claymores in your driveway, then you either better move or get seriously involved to change things, instead of thinking that the extra 4 inches of manhood on your hip is gonna protect you from everything.

As my first ex-wife said: "baby, ya got to sleep sometime". I think she watched "In the Realm of the Senses" way too many times:cool:

I not gonna live my life in fear, despite the fact I have more reason to do so than 3/4 of the folks on this Board, and I dont really care how other folks live theirs. I write only in response to the question: What kind of ambassador are you?

WA is right on 2 counts (minimum ;) ): A gun does nothing if you are blind sided and many situations are better solved without you ever pulling a gun. Some thug gets the drop on you and ask for your wallet what should you do? GIVE HIM YOUR WALLET MORON!

And yes if you live in a bad neighborhood you should move. It may cost ya but all the dudes that carry 24/7 are always pointing out "what's your life worth?" (But please don't move to Iowa). And if you truly have to use your gun for SD while living in that bad neighborhood it's gonna cost you plenty too.

I always ask folk that think they just can't live without being armed 24/7 or carry multiple guns or multiple reloads, etc this question, "Do you have a roll cage, racing seat, 5 point harness or helmet in your daily driver?". After all, they are more likely to save your life than any gun. Sure it may cost but not really that much and how much is your life worth?

If I lived in a bad snake area I might carry doing yard work for no poisonous snake is welcome at my house. Same goes if skunks were bad or there were multiple reports of vicious stray dogs and other things of that nature. But other than that a .22 or shotgun in the shed or house is close enough for me.

I'll give him one count L_K

many situations are better solved without ever pulling a gun

Can't give him the other.
Just cause you're blind sided, doesn't always guarantee you'll be incapacitated to the point you can't defend yourself.
I'm willing to roll the dice on that one as you take that chance every time you walk out your door, carrying or not.

GIVE HIM YOUR WALLET MORON

Agree, thats excellant advice.

weeds, cactus and a neighbor kid who mows my lawn for $20 every two or three weeks ... too hot to do yard work ... BUT ... if I did, I'd be armed, if only for the occasional snake or skunk that turns up ...

Everyone's situation is different. I live in a good neighborhood. Real good neighborhood, in fact. Thing is, thugs have cars and drive. They can also walk or ride their bicycles. It doesn't take too long to traverse 3, 5 or even 10 miles.

Move? Yeah, move in this wonderful housing market. I'd lose close to $100K on my house and be eating mac & cheese for the next 10 years.

I really wish people would stop pontificating how people should run their lives and get off their high-horse just because someone carries 24x7 or locks their front door when they're out in the back yard (<<<-----makes a lot of sense when I put it that way doesn't it?)

Bottom line is that people live in different worlds whether based in reality or perception.

<mods - sorry for the rant - whenever these types of threads take place, we always have a few who can't help but get on their high horse and ultimately get to - "move if you're in such a bad neighborhood".>

Every day, every where. If I've got my pants on, I've got a gun. Some times you don't get second chance to get it right.

If you think my attitudes and practices make me a nutcase, I can live with that.

shortwave:

Again, feeling [too] secure of their surroundings cause, "that just doesn't happen around here".

When I was in the crime prevention biz, we tried to reach folks who lived in the sticks and were proud to say that "we don't lock our doors around here" and who were then shocked when they were victimized. We tried to tell 'em "Crime gravitates toward the area of least resistance". But too many learned the hard way.

I carry all the time, even inside the house. I don't have the luxury of
living way out in the country somewhere or in a state where the
population is small and dispersed. I wish I did.

carry while doing yard work?

I live in a rural area on a few acres.Don't always carry but then if I'm out so are my dogs,a german sheherd,a chesapeake and my little Brittany. The brit will lick you to death, the chessie knock you down and the shepherd tear your throat out. While all this going on I retreat to either the barn or the house and a 12ga. magically appears. But yes sometimes a hand gun is with me just for plinking of coarse.

When I am not at work, I carry. Doesn't matter if I am catching a Sunday afternoon nap (while watching the TV) or doing yard work.

I always have a .22 auto in my front pocket. If I am dressing to do yard work I switch to my old Jennings. I have owned it over 20 years and it has been 100% reliable and I don't worry about hurting the finish with sweat. I use Aguila SSS 60 grainers in it and it has accounted for several red squirrels this year. If I am leaving the yard and going out on the rest of my property I carry something larger.
