Year of my 38 special?

Would someone be able to help me determine the year of my 6-shooter?

My grandfather just left it to me in his will.

The srial number is 595xxx

Assuming you took the numbers off the bottom of the grip butt and there were no letter prefixs (C,D or K), 595XXX would make it a 38 Military and Police, Model of 1905, 4th Change. Serial numbers ran from 241704 in 1915 to 758296 in 1942.

WOW!

Thank you very much!

Yeah, no prefixes.

Just 595xxx on the bottom of the butt grip in the metal!

It's got a really cool extremely old looking leather holdster too.

What's 4th change mean?

Is it worth a lot of money?

Or worth more keeping as a family heirloom?

Is it Antiques Roadshow worthy?

Or more like just personally cool in the family?

a) .38 Special
b) 1 7/8" bbl
c) Round butt
d) 5 shot
e) Fixed
f) Serial #AHL81XX
g) Mod. 36
1986.

The "change" number refers to engineering changes made to the gun during it years of production. The original Model of 1905 ran from 1905 to 1906, the 1st change from 1906 to 1909, 2nd also ran from 1906 to 1909 with minor changes, 3rd from 1909 to 1915 and 4th from 1915 to 1942.
As with any collectable, condition is very important. Value can range from $200 in only good condition to over $1200 in like new with original box and accessories.
Since it's being passed down to you from your grandfather I would not part with it.

Any idea about what month in 1986 it might be?
Unfortunately there is a big gap at that serial number range.
AHC in Jan 86 to AVB in July 87 is as close as the book gets. But I would guess that AHL would be pretty early in 86.

so no + in this one huh jim? think its worth 3-400?

THANKS SO MUCH!

Without knowing condition it's hard to say. Model 10's and their pre 10 counterparts are quite common. Value depends heavily on condition and if it has original box/accessories. About $350 in excellent with minor/little blue wear.

Serial numbers ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969. To narrow down a little more, the flat thumb release ended in 66 and the diamond grip in 68.

Did you get the serial number from the bottom of the grip butt? If it says Model 10 on the frame there should be a "C" or "D" with the SN.
Otherwise, SN 123XXX would indicate a 38 Military and Police Model of 1905, 1st or 2nd Change made from 1906 to 1909.
