Short List Of American Made

Springfield Armory is about the oldest gun manufacturing in the US.

Hi madmag

I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out, But "Springfield Armory" and "Springfield Armory Inc" are not the same thing

Springfield Armory was shut down in 1968. Springfield Armory Inc uses the name legally, but by definition, they cannot be older than Springfield Armory, so at best, they began production in 1968. In other words, although the name is there and used within all rights, Springfield Armory, Inc was not making firearms during the Civil War

WOW! I'm so patriotic. All of my handguns are on the list "made" in America. Now if my MAC-10 submachine gun and Raven .25 auto are 100% American made I'll feel even better;)

Maybe not short list

Well maybe I could change the name to not too short list of American made handguns. So far we are to 35 and that's very good. But a lot of the list specialize in just one model type, and some are almost custom shops. Nothing wrong with that, some of these companies could grow. I would like to see more like S&W, Ruger, Colt, etc. that have fairly large markets and make a large span of pistol types.

35 and still counting......more??

Added STI & RPM Merrill

Can't believe I missed STI, I have been looking at their GP6 for my next purchase....thanks:)

frankly, I don't give a damn

Certain SIG models are entirely 'USA'; so are certain models from other brands.

I don't care where "it's" made; I care how well "it's" made.
That matters, to me.

OK, but some do. This was not a list to tell people that's what they should buy. This mainly came about because of another thread when the question was raised about American manufactures of hand guns. So, I guess we can assume you have nothing positive to contribute to the list.

I doubt that. I bet the Sig's made here are from parts sent in from their home plants.

38 & counting. More??

Like I said, this is going to be hard. In the old days it was easy, "made in America" meant that all of the components and Assembly were done in America. Now companies are not really held to a tight legal standard. "made In America" could mean that over 50% of the parts are made here and the other made elsewhere. It's up to the manufacture to define. I am really thinking of a tight standard like Ruger. Ruger fabricates their own parts and then do all the assembly....now that's American made. Now my XD is not American made, although Springfield Armory is about the oldest gun manufacturing in the US.

Springfield is NOT one of the oldest gun manufacturers here or anywhere else! get your facts straight.

The Springfield Armory was setup by the U.S. military to manufacture small arms weapons. In 1968, in a controversial economic measure, the Defense Department closed the installation.

The Springfield Armory was the primary center for the manufacture of U.S. military small arms and the site of many important technological advances in gun manufacture. Many different models produced at the armory from 1794 to 1968 were referred to as "Springfield rifles".

In 1974, the Springfield Armory name was used by Robert Reese, who formed a new company to manufacture semi-automatic versions of the M14 rifle. This company, now owned and run by Reese's sons, manufactures or distributes a wide array of firearms under the Springfield Armory name. However, this company is not located near the former armory site and has no connection with the original National Arsenal. It is now located in Geneseo, Illinois. Springfield Inc.'s motto "The Oldest Name In American Firearms" while technically true, is misleading since the company has no connection whatsoever with the original Springfield Armory in Springfield Massachusetts.

Today, Springfield Armory (The new company with an old name) imports most of its products. It imports complete and partial 1911 handguns and parts from Brazil. Since 2002, it also has been licensing the rights to sell the HS2000 from Croatia and branding them as their own XD line of pistols.

Springfield Armory, and American company... I think NOT. At least some foreign gun companies have setup manufacturing here in the U.S. That at least makes those companies worthy to spend a hard earned American buck with.

Do not perpetuate the myth/lie that Springfield is a GOOD American company. From their name to their product their is nothing genuine about them.

Well, you didn't read very much did you? That was corrected as of post #24.

Now anything postive to add, or just pointing out something that was corrected a long time ago?

38 and counting...more??

I posted this on another thread and was disappointed at how short the list is for American Made handguns. Rifles & shotguns are on the list but I am mainly talking about handguns.

Anyone have others to add, or maybe disagree with the list?

You believed something just because it was posted on the Internet??

Ha Ha, Ha, that is so RICH!!! Hopefully my side does not split. :D

.

Not so short anymore, is it!?

Yeah, that what I said on post #66. Now that's good news. The only issue is we need the list to be even longer.
Well maybe I could change the name to not too short list of American made handguns.

Hopefully my side does not split.

While you are laughing maybe you could help with the list?

About the list

First, I can tell we are getting fairly close to the end because the noise level seems to be higher than actual contributions. When I started I made the title "short list" rather than long list. I felt sure many would be more challenged to fill up the list than the other way around. Also, it does appear that there is not a good listing of American gun manufactures on sites like Made In American. Maybe I could give them this list.:)

My purpose was not to suggest we only buy American made guns. I have some that don't meet that criteria myself. Well to be honest, it's nice to walk into a gun store and see guns that are on this list. This was just a quest for knowledge. Many times I see on this and other forums talk about American made guns and I really did not know how long the list might be.

Hopefully we can still add more.

Added:
I think Caspian Arms deserves honorable mention. They are not on the list for making complete handguns, but their slides & frames are completely American made.
