One Handgun - Forever?

if I could only choose 1 of my Handguns forever&that would be the only 1 I could have

I would choose my 6" Ruger GP100 357 magnum revolver. Out of the handguns I have to choose from, this one would have the extra shot of 6 instead of 5. That isn't the main reason. I can count on Ruger to last me too. I also will make adjustments to make the revolver make it as a CCW(over the shoulder holster I guess). I'm not going to give up my extra inches just to make the CCW a little easier. I would want an all purpose gun for the woods, longer ranges, or whatever.

I like FM12's choice

but I don't have the luxury to choose a 44 handgun @ this time. I want a 6" S&W 629 44 magnum revolver, but have been putting it off. I had to give my wife a break, and I know if I buy another weapon I'll need a new safe as a starter besides the fact that I'll be opening up a can of worms I was able to shut last year sometime...when I buy the 44 it will be in at least the 5" and no more than 7.5"

My 9mm Sig Sauer P229 equipped with night sights and four 18 round magazines.

This handgun has quality, ergonomics, safety, ease of cleaning and maintenance and lots of ammo available from virtually any source. It is reliable, wicked accurate and fits well in my hand.

My Springfield TRP 1911. I'd miss having a revolver of course, but a 1911 has always been my dream gun and I never tire of shooting my TRP.

Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum assuming the parameters set out by the OP.

However, in real life, the last thing I would part with would be my 1927 Argentine (Sistema Colt).

Best,

Will

Actually, it's rapidly getting to that point anyway. I'd have to go with my Walther P99, even over my Ruger P345, since I see no real advantage to the .45 auto over a 9mm. But neither one should rust and I've got plenty of ammunition for either one. After all, if I'm down to one and will need it for serious duty, I'm not going to be wasting ammunition shooting holes in tin cans.

Hunting for survival? That'd be a joke where I live. Oh, there's plenty of deer and even an occasional bear but if there were hunting all over the place by anyone with a gun, it wouldn't take long before they'd all be gone. So hunting is not a consideration, at least not where I live now. Besides, hunting is hard enough with a rifle, much less a handgun. The essence of hunting is finding.

If it were something I don't have, it would be a Colt .38 Super. No contest.

Very tough ? and difficult decision, but I chose the following :

Year designed and first produced - 1929
Length 5.9"
Height 3.9"
Weight 19 ounces, 23 ounces loaded
Fixed barrel (permantly fixed to frame) for better accuracy
Loaded chamber indicator - visual and tactile, best design ever
Action - semi-auto, DA/SA
Ring hammer (still popular)
Slide stop - many say it doesn't have one, but if you know how, you can use the ejector
Push button mag release
Can be fired accurately using only three fingers
Simple operation and takedown, and repairable too by an able amateur.

This handgun was designed at the behest of police detectives who wanted a perfect hideout gun. It is the Walther PPK, still made today, tho despite computer assisted production techniques the quality does not equal the guns made in the 1930s-40s which still command high prices.

It is not my favorite handgun but if I had to choose only one handgun the PPK would be it...the OP also wanted a 'hunting' option which I think is unfair since a handgun's purpose is SD, not hunting (thats for rifles) but I guess I would just have to make do with squirrels, rabbits, woodchucks, turkey, etc, and get a pointy stick for bigger game....

I'd have to say it would be my Smith Model 28.

I've killed everything from snakes and rabbits, dogs, all the way up to moose.

Plus with it, I could still be competitive in competition such as ICORE and USPSA.

It's a bit heavy but I carried it for 20 years, I suppose I could carry it a few more.

Years ago, I would have said one of my 1911s. These days, probably my SS j-frame. It's been on my hip or in my pocket for almost 20 years and I've taken it places where I can't take any other gun. Can't imagine myself without it now.

Greetings
I would go with my Dan Wesson 414 Supermag with 8 " barrel. And because it is a Dan Wesson I will keep my 4 " barrel for it for carry. A 265 gc bullet at 1550 fps is going to take care of any critter I ever have to stop. With the 4 " I could easily shoot 41 mag loads on 414 brass or just use 41 mag brass. It is a very strong super accurate revolver that will out last me. Sadly I cannot have it here in Peru so just get to use it when up north there.

The other interesting aspect is, how many folks actually have their chosen model & chambering? The reason I don't actually own my #1 choice (S&W .357 revolver, 6" bbl) is that I don't have to have only one. :p

This way, I avoid the inevitable compromises via my .22's up to my 7.5" 454. Sort of odd that I have no significant interest in owning what I would consider to be my 'best' choice. :)

Glock 19. It was the first handgun I ever bought and I will never get rid of it. I love the size, I love the capacity, and I love its reliability. Not the prettiest girl at the dance but she sure gets the job done.

From my collection, it would be my 6" SS GP100 357 mag. Versatile ammo, from light 38 to heavy 357 loads. Long enough for long range hunting. Just a joy to shoot.

Second place would be my 3" SP101 in 357.

BTW, I don't mind these threads one bit. Pretty entertaining to see what everyone else thinks. And good for the economy, because now I want to go get a few more guns. :D

That would be Stella,,,

S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece.

I own a Colt Trooper Mk-III in .357 magnum,,,
Technically that might be a better pistol,,,
But I hit with Stella very nicely.

I don't feel underpowered with a .38 Special,,,
So I would choose accuracy over a bigger boom.
