To heck with hoglegs and such...I'm fillin the holsters & saddlebags with cash...Heading straight for the Sharps Rifle Mnf. Co., & Colt & Remington, Winchester, S&W..Gonna buy all the high-grade long & mid range matchrifles from Sharps & Rem., one of 1000 73 & 76' Win. Engraved Colts & S&W..all I can carry back with me!

The only problem with that is today's money will be counterfeit to them. Who back then would take it?

Who cares about ammo availability? You've got a time machine! Why would it be a one way trip?

It's not like it matters much... You'd have to go LOOKING for a gun fight. It wasn't like the movies where they shoot up the town every 5 minutes. Looking for a fight would be no smarter then than it is now.

I would want to have this one on me for sure :D

Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull

If the bullet didn't hit them, the blast would scare them to death. Double action would be a plus in a shoot out. 45 colt if the bad guys were puny! Would love to see the look on everyone's face after you fired that 454 round off!

Wow FrankenMauser....it may be a "revolver-type gun," but if you seriously intend to pack that monster then you must have arms like Gorgeous George ---> or Arnold Schwarzenegger for our younger members.

I'd put the weapon at about 160 lbs, but I only need to carry it long enough to get one shot off.

It's not what I would take, it's what I would bring back,,,

I'm assuming if you have a way to get there,,,
You also have a way to get back,,,
'Cause I don't wanna stay!

I would take a modern stainless steel revolver,,,
Chambered in .45 Colt.

Then I would go to the Colt factory,,,
And get a cased set of Walker pistols,,,

Then do the Wells Fargo thing like in Back to the Future.

The "rules" set down by the OP said I could take a gun with me. Of course it is all fantasy, but if I can do that, why limit myself to a gun I could buy there or a gun that was obsolete even then, like a percussion revolver. If I am not limited to a revolver, I will tote an M16 and an M9 or a Glock.

I am not going to "play fair" and limit myself to the guns they had; if I get into a gunfight, I want to win it. A half mag of FA from an M16 while the other guy is cocking his sixshooter should take care of the situation.

If I was to time travel I would bring some thing like a Glock with a laser sight and sell it to Colt or S&W and retire

If I had to take something that would serve me throughout the entire 15 year time period that the OP set forth, I'd take a stainless Ruger Old Army. The OP's time period is one in which metallic cartridges were in their infancy and as such, ammunition and components could be quite difficult to find. A stainless Old Army would allow me to remain supplied with ammunition, but would also be easier to maintain since I'm shooting black powder. If I had to pick a cartridge-firing gun to take with me, it would be my S&W 629 since, once I run out of .44 Magnum and/or .44 Special ammo, I could still use it with .44 Russian ammunition and, like the Old Army, the stainless gun is easier to maintain with black powder.

I would take a Nice Custom S.A.A. (A Colt). A 4 3/4" Hard Cast frame and blued in 45LC with Stag Grips. Because of the time period I choose this 1st. I could easily fired the black powder loads out of it, 250gr.'s of lead sounds nice :). I would also be tempeted to have like a Nickel 4 3/4" Colt S.A.A in .45LC as my back up to my hip gun in a nice shoulder holster like Holliday but hidden. Mine would be tucked tight. Finally my 3rd gun on me would be a 45LC Derringer to be a last ditch SHTF weapon. Id have a side by side nice sawed off 10 Gauge because they were popular back then, and tons of 00 & 000 Buck and Slugs :D. I really like the old western time period, the 1930's is my favorite though.

-- However as my Hip Gun and if I had unlimited ammo of my selection (Esp. Gold Dots, Win Ranger T, and HST's and some 260gr. Hard Cast 45ACP, gotta love it.) it would be an Ed Brown Kobra Carry, Blued with the bobbed frame. I will own it soon, but I would get rid of the ambi saftey. My second choice, and a close one, would be a MKIV Series 70 1911 Gov. Model. I would make a few customizations such as 3 -Dot Novaks, a Bevertail, hammer, trigger job, extended saftety, fitted blued bushing for accuracy, polished ramp and throated barrel. Thats it. I might go with the MKIV because the longer barrel of the 5" 1911's are PERFECT. Imagine what people would think if some guy challenged me and I pulled out a 1911 and put 2-3 rounds in him before he got 1 good shot. Im rambling sorry I got into that post lol :).

I'll take one of those S&W 8 shot 357's, so long as I could bring a ton of ammo or reloading supplies with me.

Otherwise, something modern in 45 colt. Probably a 625 or a Redhawk.

Swing out cylinder would be a must for me.

The Smith & Wesson Governor with six rounds of either .45 , .45LC or .410. Better yet two of them, and a close up gun fight.:D

First thought off the top of my head was my Security Six but ammo would be impossible to come buy and I'm not sure black powder would work very well in the .357. So next in my mind was a Blackhawk or Redhawk in .45 colt.

Webleymkv brings up a good point for the Old Army and if you're talking pre 1872 that would be the best choice. I don't think that there would be much arguement against it being the best cap and ball revolver ever made.

Probably take the Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt that I have owned and used for the past 28 years. I'm pretty familiar with that gun, and what I can do with it.

To fit in better, and still have a good (and the most effective/efficient) revolver, either a Vaquero or New Vaquero. Colt SAA would be fine also, but could be obtained locally after 1873.

Since the year of arrival was left fairly open, I'd try to land in the latter part. One thing about time travel, if you stand out from the locals, you are going to be noticed, and talked about. Depending on what you do, perhaps even arrested/attacked. If you have to defend yourself, and there are any witnesses, a GLock or something really different from the period is going to draw attention. Since you are alone, that's one thing you don't want.

All my time travel fantasies include a "panic button", something impossible to lose (like surgically implanted) difficult to operate by accident, yet instant to operate by me, to activate the time recall mechanism and snatch me back to modern times. Generally I prefer the smart system offered by Time Binders Inc., that senses deadly pressure and poofs you back to the lab before that bullet hits/you hit the bottom of the cliff/the TRex closes his jaws on you, etc., leaving only empty air and a confused look on the faces of any witnesses back then!:D

Wonder if I could get Ruger to make me a GP100 with a 4" barrel in .44-40?

If they did the cylinder/barrel gap would be too close for black powder loads. It would lock up from fouling pretty quick. Also the original 44-40 used a .427 diameter heeled bullet. Modern 44-40's are chambered for a .429 bullet. You'd have to force them into the chambers and forget about accuracy. Another thing. If y'all are gonna be strutting around flashing modern hardware like nobody has ever seen, some bushwhacker is gonna shoot you in the back with a 10 gauge and take it from you. Me, I'll take a 60 Colt and try to blend in while I stockpile the time machine with original pristine weapons and leather not to mention almost uncirculated gold coins.:D

Just a plain old '58 NMA for me, with a conversion cylinder in case I can use it. Also, everyone wants to make some money by lugging things around (gold, guns, etc.). Heck with that. I'll make more money just by knowing the future.
