Going Back To The Wild West In A Time Machine.....?

Depends on what year I go

I'm not really all that keen on finding out I have a firearm chambered for a round that doesn't exist

But to play the game, I want a Registered Magnum

As with any firearm, take one for which you can get ammunition locally in that era. A gun without ammunition is just a clumsy club.

I think I'd have to go with my 44 Mag Super Redhawk for long distance capabilities. Of course I'd have to bring my bandolero rig with me to haul it around.

I'd bring a BP revolver. Probably the Remington 1858 or Walker as above. I'll probably be limited to soap, water, and coal oil for cleaning the thing since I don't imagine the general store will stock Hoppes #9 or Bore Tech Eliminator.

Of course, I suppose I could make the original version of Ed's Red... (It just wouldn't be red)

Stop thinking of cowboys as only carrying Colt peacemakers. For a large part of the history of the Wild West, the cap and ball revolvers were king, and since most cowboys were too broke to afford the new Colt Peacemakers....cap and ball revolvers would have been used my many well into the 1880s.
I wouldn't select it because it was supposedly the "gun that won the west", I would choose it because the Colt Peacemaker was a great weapon, used and loved by many people for a lot of years.

I'm not too up on handguns from that era, . . . but it would have to be one of them fancy top break rascals that spit the brass out when you opened it, . . . maybe Schofield????

But in any event, . . . I ain't goin' lessen some body with some authority promises me I can take my 'lectric lites, . . . flush toilet, . . . and a forced air gas furnace.

Can't take em? Ain't goin!!! ;)

May God bless,
Dwight

1860 to 1875 is a pretty long period. not neccisarily in years, but evolution of weapons.
If you are choosing a cartridge that didn't exist (.357, .38 spec., 44 mag), then you may well be out of luck after a time. Let's remember that even though the classic Colt Peacemaker was introduced in 1873 it probably wasn't in very wide spread use until several years after that. and then you must consider a caliber.

I'd love to say Schofield, but again ammo could be an issue.

I'd also like to say a "cartridge conversion" 1860, but I don't know any specifics of reliability, etc.

Wonder if I could get Ruger to make me a GP100 with a 4" barrel in .44-40?

I would take my ruger sbh, 7.5 in. bbl.

AND, I would take along a fair supply of silver and gold ingots to trade for several of the "NEW" early guns from that era, cause when I got back, MAN would I have a garage sale.

Fun and profit my friends, fun and profit!:D:D:D:D

Hmmm, good question.....I think it'd be a S&W Model 22, Model of 1917 in .45acp. It just looks like the one to have.

I'd have to go with WIN73 on this one, the 1851 navy in .36 cal, is very accurate for a cap & ball and recoil is nill. firepower means nothing if you can't hit what your shootin at !

How 'bout a 20 mm Revolving Cannon?
The M39A:

(Note the secondary, revolver frame. It is electrically actuated, to provide gas pressure to clear jams.)

It IS gas operated. So, I guess it's closer to an Auto-Revolver than a Peacemaker. ...But it's still a revolver! ;)

One shot from this, and I could get all the "period" revolvers I needed.

Wow FrankenMauser....it may be a "revolver-type gun," but if you seriously intend to pack that monster then you must have arms like Gorgeous George ---> or Arnold Schwarzenegger for our younger members.:eek::eek:

To heck with hoglegs and such...I'm fillin the holsters & saddlebags with cash...Heading straight for the Sharps Rifle Mnf. Co., & Colt & Remington, Winchester, S&W..Gonna buy all the high-grade long & mid range matchrifles from Sharps & Rem., one of 1000 73 & 76' Win. Engraved Colts & S&W..all I can carry back with me!

Sorry for my bias but I carried one for years

6" stainless .357 Ruger Security Six with several speedloaders. I prefer a DA revovler that I can reload fast if I need to. May I have tritium night sights too?:D

I like how half of the people in this thread apparently think they can go back and bring a revolver to the present and the other half want to take a DA revolver from today back there.

I would go with my S&W 66 and I'd carry it in a shoulder holster since I'm from the future anyways.
