Anyone Else "Done" with Ultra Compact Guns?

Yeah I did the compact carry for awhile, using an LCR, as well as a PF-9, and even tried a TCP .380. the PF-9 and the TCP had terrible triggers, and I wasn't real comfortable with 5 rounds in the LCR. Sold all 3 and went back to my bobbed S&W E-series SC1911. It's been accurized, has night sights and easily shoots 6 inch groups at 25 yards. The trigger is incredible, something you can't really get in a compact carry. The scandium frame makes it fairly light compared to an all steel. As for capacity, 7+1 with 2 10 round reloads seems like enough firepower. A good holster and a good gun belt make all the difference.

Personally, I have little need for a micro unless it is on a backup pistol role. Let's be honest with ourselves, if we are carrying concealed then we damn well better decide on an EDC that can stop a potential threat. Many micro's are just not enough gun to be a primary carry weapon. Chances are, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself from armed attack then your attacker will likely not be carrying a mouse gun. It's an offense versus defense mindset. Put yourself in the other persons shoes, would you attempt a carjacking, robbery, home invasion, etc, while armed with a cap pistol? The answer is NO. The bad guys play by a different set of rules. I would advocate for carrying the type of weapon that you feel you could go to war with.

Half a century ago my grandpa told me "it ain't always about the size of the dog in the fight son....sometimes it's the size of the fight in the dog!" I think many times this is true about SD/HD. Crooks aren't fighting to save their lives or the lives of their loved ones. They are looking for an easy mark and the path of least resistance. So many folks have this unrealistic image of "going to war" when all they really need to worry about is stickin' a gun in the belly of the belly of their attacker and pulling the trigger. Those with him will be gone at the first shot. If they are there to battle, the individual with 15 rounds is dead anyway with 14 rounds left. Folks have this vision they are going to save the mom and her three children standing in line at the grocery store during an armed robbery.....and be declared a hero in the local paper. Where in fact they are just as likely to draw crossfire to that same mom and kids. We as civilians are not cops......we do not have to be on the offensive, and in many cases it is illegal for us to be. There is much more to SD/HD than the amount of ammo we have. There is situational awareness, proficiency with one's firearm and keeping a cool head. Again, one needs to carry what they are comfortable with and have the most confidence with. Just cause it works for them, don't make it right for everyone else, nor is any other choice necessarily inferior.

FWIW....if I was going to war, I certainly would not choose a handgun first, especially one that could be concealed easily.

There are many who believe they should always be armed as if "going to war". I am not one of them. In response to the original question, no. I generally carry a compact, double stack 9 mm, with 10+1 rounds and maybe a 17 round reload. At times though I carry 6+1 of 380 with a 7 round reload, so I am not done with subcompact guns. They have a place for me. I am not going to war carrying either, or both, of these pistols given a choice. Am I armed adequately for my daily activities? I think so. I hope to never test my choices.

Full size, any-time, all the time.

I carry a full size gun + an extra magazine every day. Either a Gen 4 Glock 17 or a CZ-85B in 9mm.

I don't think there's anything wrong with carrying a smaller gun. I prefer wearing fairly loose fitting clothes to begin with so there's no reason for me not to carry full size. I am thin and have plenty of space to conceal. I have a good belt and holster.

I prefer to err on the side of caution in case I need the extra ammo. I may consider carrying a small gun as a back-up at some point.

Things seem to have been taking a turn for the worse lately in my area. I am willing to put up with some extra ounces.

Compact is a problem with big hands and fingers. Grip is the issue. Power is the hope for self-defense. In my state, I must CC from my concealment. The Tool I use is a Ruger LC9S with exceptional ammo. Small, smaller, and mouse are three different approaches. Concealed Carry is about "hide until need." Use the smallest with the most "punch" you can find. Don't buy small unless you have tried it on the range first. Small hands can take a small mouse gun. Big hands need something they can grip comfortably at the range.

I wish in my state I could open carry with a 1911...but that I do not want someone to know I am carrying. An open carry with a large firearm in the holster can make you a target. Criminals see an open carry as a target with diversion with an accoplace to the attack.

I wish I were still young and healthy enough that I could look down on anyone who didn't carry what I thought was appropriate.

Only ten years ago I carried 4" N-frames or 4 inch steel 1911s, all day, every day.

Time is the great equalizer. One day (if you live long enough) you too will see the utility of a lightweight, subcompact single stack pistol.

So...no, I am not "done" with ultra compact guns. My Kahr PM9 is my EDC, and will be for the foreseeable future.

Never had any interest in a mouse gun for EDC. I like my Tomcat fine for a fun time at the range but it didn't cut it as a pocket gun for the times when I truly need a pocket gun.(too heavy for beltless shorts or sweats) If I really need all day comfort I can be good to go with a double stack compact 9mm. Most times though I am just fine with a full size .45 or 10mm. Just bought my first mouse gun with the intent of concealed carry. It will be in my pocket at all times and will be my only carry piece very rarely. If I feel under gunned in those circumstances that's fine with me. It's a helluva lot better than being unarmed! So, no. Not done. Just wised up enough to start. ;)

The truth is - I can make do with just about any kind of gun. Sure, I have my preferences, but to me, there isn't but a hill-o-beans difference between a Boberg XR9-S and a 1911 or S&W Chief's special.

Not me. Have a couple Kimber Micros and like the both. Fun to shoot and quite accurate for little guns.

I work in an office environment, deal with the public constantly, and dress professionally (slacks and collared shirt, usually a jacket, and a lab coat when seeing patients). My "big" carry pistol is a Glock 26. For a while I used a tuck holster when better-than-usual concealment was necessary, but I added a P238 for pocket carry a few months ago, feeling like I had better access in my pocket than in a holster tucked in under extra layers of clothing.

Plus my wife had one and it was just so cool I had to have one of my own.

Pistols bigger than the G26 come along for range fun, but don't get carried in my situation.

The well being of the American people is no longer a priority for career politicians. We have 10,000 people coming from Syria who cannot be vetted since we never had a presence there. Our politicians will not secure our borders to make sure their large donors have access to cheap labor and/or to recruit more entitlement voters. We have political leaders stoking the fires of division emboldening domestic terror cells like BLM to exact vigilante justice.

I live in Dallas, after the BLM ambush in June that devastated our PD, I sold the 442 and relaced it with a Gen. 3 Glock 23. to augment my Gen. 4 Glock 22. The round I carry performs at .45ACP levels. The minimum acceptable capacity for me is 13 rounds with two spares on me and two mags in the briefcase or vehicle. The rules changed this summer. If you don't have a Comcealed Carry license and you meet the qualifications to have one, I implore you to do so.

When I started to carry 40 years ago it was a Smith Md#37. At the time it's what I could afford and that's what I carried! I carried for personal protection, to get me out of a bad situation?,not fight a war or hoards of attackers. As time went on I also carried a Colt Vest Pocket .25, that was for the times the 37 just didn't fit with the situation.
Over time now I have carried quite a few as my likes and my collection grew.
I carry still with the thought of just personal protection, so right now my current everyday carry is my LCP 380.
When the situation arises that I feel I need more I go to my Smith Md#36 or my Glock 27.
But for the most part it's my little LCP, easy to conceal, easy to carry! ;)

My Makarov PM is about as compact as I actually like a gun to be for an "all rounder", not a fan of the micro ultra nano mini pistols.

I don't know what this talk is about "marginally effective" with a pistol that is easily to conceal. Most folks I shoot with can hit the 8 ring in a B-27 target at 25 yards most of the time with a Sig P290, Kahr, Glock 42, Ruger LC9, etc. Move them up to the 10 yard line and hit % goes to near 100. Most personal SD situations will be at 10 yards or less.

I get that there are folks who buy a gun and rarely train with it, but I doubt that is most of us here.
