Anyone Else "Done" with Ultra Compact Guns?

Well let me see if i am done with Micro carry pistols, i have currently:

3 Sig P 238's
Kimber Micro Carry
Colt Mustang
Glock 42
Sig P 938
Eight Star DK's
RM 380
Kelteck 380
14 FI Model D
1 IJ Pony
S&W Bodyguard
Walther PPK
Five Makarov's ( maybe not quite Micro sized)
Fifteen Star Model S and SI (380 & .32)
FEG-SMC
Remington R 51 on the way
And i cannot remember how many other small to Micro sized pistols are in the safes. So I guess my answer is......."mine are here to stay".

Depends on what one means by 'ultra'.

Glock 26 ain't 'ultra' for the caliber. Nor is the Glock 43.

The Glock 33 and 27 are borderline. Some can handle it one handed, some cannot.

Now I find the little guns in .45, like the Colt Defender, just way to much power for the package (same as the S&W 340PD in .357 magnum... if you use magnums!)

Hence in such as the 26/43 size Glocks I prefer 9mm. Glock 19 size I perfer .357 Sig/.40 S&W. In full size Glock 17s, .357 Sig/.40 S&W and maybe .45 GAP (I've got some brass but no gun!)

Same goes for 1911 style guns. Minis.. 9mm, Commander .40/.45. Full sized, .45 all the way.

As a full time LEO, I haven't had a "pocket gun" for years. That was a passing fad for me. Tried a couple. I still had to come up with a functional, concealable, safe way to carry a gun that was typically of small caliber, lower capacity and less ergonomic than my 4" duty pistol. If I'm going through all of that trouble, I just as well carry my 4" gun that I carry everyday and train with regularly.

Let's be honest, most folks carry a gun in case they find themselves in a situation in which they feel "combat" is their only chance of survival. Most of these tiny little guns are not effective for such tasks. IME, most folks run out and buy/carry the smallest gun they can find to have the security blanket of having a gun on them, without taking the time to figure out if they can shoot it well. At the end of the day, they're likely not doing themselves (nor me if I happen to be standing nearby when they pull it out and start shooting) any favors.

I do have a 5 shot J frame that I carry daily if I have long pants on (ankle gun), but that's a backup and I train with it regularly.

YMMV.

Not in the least. My LCP is my 100% of the time carry, but in the colder months might get suplimented with another Sub Compact in either 9MM, or 40S&W.

Used to carry a Glock 26. Darned thing started to hurt my hand (I have a mild case of RA). So, I switched to a Glock 17. MUCH more comfortable to shoot and not too tough to conceal.

I've had several other "super compact" pistols and revolvers, including a Kahr CM9 I carried for quite awhile. No more.

To answer the question posed directly....am I "done" with super compact handguns ? Yes, I definitely am.

This is a good point, and I think all too common. If you're gonna use a marginally effective firearm and cartridge, you ought to at least be skilled with it.

I enjoy shooting my tiny guns, and feel pretty confident that I could defend myself if I had to. I happen to believe that a half dozen shots to the torso with a 380 would probably stop most attackers. jd

I'm probably the odd one here. I have everything from a TCP to a full size 1911. My favorite gun to shoot is my 1911 but the one I carry most of the time is the little TCP. I figure if I need a gun, it will most likely be up close and personal and the TCP fits that role.

Practice with the gun you carry. This has already been mentioned several times. I prefer smaller guns like my RM380 or my CM9 but I shoot them both monthly. I carry the RM380 during the day running errands and the CM9 if I go out at night. I carry an extra mag most of the time. Not for "tactical reload" but in case the first one has a failure.

g willikers, I have a custom made shoulder wheel barrow for carry purpose:)
actually I have kydex IWB holsters for the Sig P 238, 938, Micro Carry and G 42 which are my main carry pistols. Choosing which to carry on a given day is akin to deciding which TV dinner to cook tonight. Mostly one of the 238's accompany me during the day, all three are accurate and reliable pistols that disappear under a sweat shirt yet remain available if needed.
Back to the original issue, no I do not think the micro pistols have run their course Kimber has just released a Micro 9 and the R 51 looks to be a fairly small pistol (mine will arrive next week and I will know) convenient easy to carry pistols will be around a long time..

I don't even own a sweatshirt, sweater, or heavy jacket due to the climate so I'm not giving up my .380 anytime soon. Every tool has purpose. If I know I'll be unavoidably at high risk (work), I'll dress around the full size.

Some excellent responses made here. Personally, I have little need for a micro unless it is on a backup pistol role. Let's be honest with ourselves, if we are carrying concealed then we damn well better decide on an EDC that can stop a potential threat. Many micro's are just not enough gun to be a primary carry weapon. Chances are, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself from armed attack then your attacker will likely not be carrying a mouse gun. It's an offense versus defense mindset. Put yourself in the other persons shoes, would you attempt a carjacking, robbery, home invasion, etc, while armed with a cap pistol? The answer is NO. The bad guys play by a different set of rules. I would advocate for carrying the type of weapon that you feel you could go to war with. It doesn't need to be a full size duty weapon with multiple spares. But, it needs to be 'enough gun' to allow you to feel confident in your ability to employ it well enough to save your life when the time comes.

Yees, long ago.... found that most one really noticed me carrying a full size and having had two dgus vowed to have plenty of rounds and something I am comfortable with.

Real Micro I own... Psssst, i don't carry any of these just my old Colt light Cobra tuned and bobbed 24/7.
