3 must own handguns?

i think that 3 that would cover all bases would be a 22 for plinking, a full size in 45 357 or 44 and then a compact in one of the 9mm bullet varients for ccw

for me this is
1) ruger 22
2) a 1911
3) S&W j frame

You can kill two birds with one stone and get a CZ 75 with a Kadet .22 conversion unit. That allows you to still have two more pistols. :D

well if you r starting:

Sig P226-22
Sig P226-9mm

they are both cheap calibers to shoot, the guns are the same so don't need to deal with differences in grips. then when they are mastered get what you like.

How about just picking 3 categories of gun by use and filling them:

1- A main CC gun that you would take most of the time
2 -A pocket CC gun that you can ALWAYS take if #1 won't work
3 -A larger, higher capcity gun for HD and range use.

I'd just get the best one in each category that I could afford, something like

1- A HK P2000sk
2 - (The hardest one to choose) a S&W 642
3 - Any larger, double-stack Sig, Walther, Beretta - How about a Walther P99

With these three I'd have a hard time being able to rationalize buying anything else.

I assume we are talking handguns only and we have long guns to cover other tasks. That said, my priority would be on self defense and survival.

1. Deep concealment: auto or revolver that can fit into pocket of dress slacks without excessive "printing".

2. High capacity, major caliber: most likely a semi-auto or revolver with a capacity greater than 7.

3. Large caliber, trail gun: most likely a large frame revolver or Glock 20

Ain't no way I am stopping at 3 though! I have to have a good BBQ gun (1911), a plinker/trainer (.22 rimfire) , a BFG (think real big), matched pair of S/A sixguns, military classics, a he thinks he's James Bond gun (Walther), a "wow that's weird" gun...

J Frame size 38 spl.

K Frame size 357 with a 4in barrel

P series Ruger Semi ...your choice of calibers

Note I listed J Frame SIZE
and K Frame SIZE

Did not mention brand ,to each there own :)

If I were to pare down to three handguns I would go:
Ruger MKII
Ruger single six/ten
GP100 6"

There are a few guns I could substitute for the mark II that are the same price or cheaper and it wouldn't bother me.
The single six is pretty much the only gun I would fill that slot with.
My state requires pistols with 6" barrels chambered in straight wall cartridges for deer. Otherwise I would probably go with a 4".
This assume you cant do something like throw in an Encore with infinite barrels or even a Glock with all the barrels.

Now, if you had all your utiliy guns and you just wanted the three guns needed to round out your collection or whatever, I would say hipower, 1911(I would choose commander in 38), and a PPK. Even though I like revolvers, I would say those three are the most iconic and have the most ?character?.

No specific brands or models:
22 rimfire. Either revolver, or semi-auto
9MM semi-auto
357 Magnum revolver

But that's only a start!

1. A classic S&W revolver. Your choice of era, caliber, frame size, and finish.

2. A 1911

3. A .22lr revolver or semi-auto

A Smith & Wesson Model 41 (.22RF), a Smith & Wesson Model 52 (.38 Special) and a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup (.45 ACP)-oh, did I forget to mention I'm mostly a Bullseye shooter? :)

Some type of .22. If one has a bit of experience, an auto would be fine. Otherwise a revolver. 4" bbl, good sights and trigger. no junk

A mid bore, ie .357 revolver. Again, 4" bbl, adj sights. No junk. At this point you could just about quit and go w/ just 2 guns. This was my standard battery for many years, till stuff got paid for and I got my feet under me. Actually, I had just one .357 during most of that period, and no .22!

A big bore. If you seem prone to revolvers.......45 LC or .44 mag. A 1911 would fit here as well, but not as much power as the above pair.
