3 must own handguns?

1. Walther PPK or PPK/S (the sexiest gun ever made)
2. A good .22
3. A good revolver (could be combined with 2. if it is a .22)
4. A good 1911

I can't list three particular essential handguns, but I can list three essential roles I would want to be filled by three handguns:
  • A good .22 pistol; one of the following:
    • Ruger Mark II
    • Ruger Mark III
    • Ruger 22/45
    • Browning Buckmark
  • CCW pistol (small compact, concealable); I'd suggest something like:
    • Kahr PM9
    • Walther PPS
    • Ruger SR9c
  • Range pistol (compact or full size). I'd look at:
    • Glock compact or full size, for me probably 17 or 19 series.
    • 1911 in any of various calibers and sizes
    • Walther P99 or PPQ (my personal favorite)
I've stuck mostly to .22 and 9mm because of ammo expense, but several I've listed come in multiple calibers.

My pick would be

1. S&W model 17 - 22lr

2. Ruger Blackhawk 357/9mm convertible with 4&5/8 barrel

3.Colt or Springfield 1911 45 -5"

I'll be fairly generic:

1. A .22 LR of some type, revolver or auto.

2. A .357 Magnum revolver

3. A semi automatic of some type

That I believe would represent a fairly well rounded collection.

A .22 revolver is usually a very heavy DA pull. If the recommendation is to practice SA only, then I concur. Otherwise a Browning Buckmark would be a better option. .22LR and single-action is all about teaching proper aiming, breathing, etc. I don't think a DA revolver does that.

Very heavy pull? Never fired a S&W K-22, have you?

You can learn proper aiming, breathing, sight picture etc on either. You can even learn proper trigger control on either, though light single action triggers tend to hide bad habits.

1. A .22lr revolver or semi with a 5" min barrel

2. A .357/.38 med framed revolver with a min 4" barrel

3. A 380 or larger revolver or semi that can be easily carried concealed

Number 3 covers a lot of territory  and some will reject it completely. This list covers all my needs for handguns. My wants is a much longer and more detailed list. YMMV:cool:

Just three? Well, I guess it makes a good starting point. ;)

1. .22 of some sort. One could do much worse than a MK 2 or 3.
2. Full size .357 revolver. Plenty to pick from, but Ruger or S&W would be the best starting point.
3. A good solid 1911. Plenty of choices, let your budget be your guide.

For those of you choosing both a 4" .357 and a 1911 why? I mean let's face it, while both the 1911 and the 4" .357 have a plus' and minus' over the other they're both in the same ball park. Seem's kinda redundant.

Agreed LK. If you're trying to cover the bases, what made sense to me was a plinker, a fighter, and a hunter. Each to his/her own, I guess.

1. 22 LR Revo./plinking/fun/serious practice of fundamentals. I have a Charter Arms Pathfinder.

2. Medium frame revo in .38 or 44 spl for carry. I have a colt agent/38 spl and a charter bulldog/44 spl

3. A large bore revo. I have a s&w 629/44 mag. For anything 1 and 2 cant handle.

Same manual of arms for all, except the pull of cylinder release of the Colt. Not a big deal overall. Mild to wild. All covered.

A 22 of some nature, a pocket CCW and a service size gun. I've got dozens of combinations to choose from. Today I'll take my Sig Trailside,Smith 442 and Les Baer Concept III

22 Revolver or Auto.
I have a K-22 S&W

40 Cal
I have Glock 27

1911 Auto
I have a Warthog 45cal

44Mag S&W

There are several good weapons on the market in these calibers.
Sorry I have to say 4 weapons are must have

Gotta have a good .22 handgun, I prefer a revolver but own a Smith 22a.

Gotta have a 1911; I have two, love them both.

Gotta have a good plastic semi ... Mine is a Springer XDm-9, huge capacity, easy to carry, very accurate and reliable. Glock would work, too, or most of the big-name gunmakers.

If I could have just one more, it would be my Kahr PM9, the gun I carry most often ... I love pocket carry, given the heat here most of the year, and the Kahr is a dream to carry and shoot.

Not even close. One is a revolver, the other an autoloader ... one has a muzzle energy of about 500 ft-lbs, the other about 800 ft-lbs ... not even close.

1. Truly compact 9mm SD Carry gun - I like the HK P7
2. DA .357 Mag revolver - S&W 686P thank you very much
3. Full Size Battle/Zombie pistol - 9mm BHP or FNP45 or XDM .45

These 3 types are essential. I also consider a .22 LR plinker essential, but ranked 4th, and we were only given 3 choices. :o
