Interestingly, I also have frequently heard great things about the Ruger GP100 and I was able to get one with a 4" barrel just after the 1st of this year. I only took it shooting twice, but I just didn't like the feel of the gun as much as my 4" S&W Model 66 that I have had for over 20 years (and which was my 1st handgun). This weekend at a local gun show I traded the Ruger for a 4" S&W 686!! I haven't had a chance to shoot the 686 yet, but it looks a lot like my 66 at 1st glance except that there is a full lug under the barrel and the gun has a slightly heftier frame. Both of these 4" S&W revolvers have wooden checkered grips that I personally like very much (though I have heard a few people complain about them). These grips feel better to my hand than the grips on the GP100, but OTOH, I have heard others say that they like the GP100 grips better. Grips and handguns must be a vanilla/chocolate sort of thing.
Hey coonan357, as far as the S&W/Lew Horton 3" Model 66 that I bought from someone else this weekend, mine is not ported, and mine has a serial number very different from yours. In fact, your post has made me question just exactly what I have since the serial number on my gun is CDC6XXX. I will probably try to contact Lew Horton and/or Smith & Wesson and see if I can figure out just what it is that I actually do have. Whatever it is sure does look and feel nice. I haven't had a chance to fire it yet though, but I hope to do so this weekend.
