In general, your car is a depreciating asset. Guns, on the other hand, can gain in value over time if you buy selectively. I have several that fit that description. Others are just good shooters and will probably never be valuable. Besides, guns bring me pleasure and happiness. They are a hobby. A car is a tool that I use daily.

1995 GMC Sierra K1500 extended cab 197K miles.

1. Starting to rust out
2. second gear slips when it kicks down from OD or 3rd
3. needs a new windshield
4. needs new tires
5. the environmentals fan only works on high and only blows out the defrost and foot ports.
6. it needs its 5th passenger side exhaust manifold
7. it needs its 3rd drivers side exhaust manifold
8. O2 sensor is dead and will not come out, so its unplugged.
9. when it rains the truck likes to run like someone poured 8 gallons of water into the gas tank.
10. tail gate latch assembly is seized up, so the tail gate wont open.
11. the drivers side door has to be opened from the outside lever. inside lever assembly doesn't work
12. the antenna wire to the radio is FUBAR, you receive more crackling and static than anything - unless you hit a PA pothole just right then it comes in perfectly until the next pothole 100ft away.

My gun collection easily exceeds the value of my vehicle. ...just how I like. vehicles are just transportation to me.. I own big handguns as my implement of a penis extension.

I am a college student...

so my current debt (this year's tuition) is worth more than my gun collection and vehicle combined :(.

Well I drive an 04 model Jeep Wrangler in excellent condition with very low k's and lots of accessories (hard & soft tops, tyres/rims, etc) I figure my firearm collection is worth 2-3 times more than my Jeep :)

I made the decision many years ago to forgo a vehicle payment and stop using tobacco in order to channel that money into my collection.

I know so many people that can't figure out how someone can have a collection worth tens of thousands of dollars but they spend $600/month on the combined expenses of a car payment, full coverage car insurance, and cigerettes. I've been collecting seriously for about 16 years (since the '94Clinton gun ban) so 16 x 12 x $600 = $115,200. My collection should be alot bigger than it is, but I sold a bunch at two different crisis points during that time (divorce and extended unemployment while returning to college). I've pretty consistantly allowed myself to spend $50/wk on my guns and ammo though so I guess my budget would be more like:16 x 12 x $50 = $9600. I've done pretty well on most of the guns I've sold or traded so I guess that accounts for the difference.

I own 2 trucks and a car. All of them require more maintenence than a new vehicle, but I do that myself, and by having an extra vehicle I am able to schedule maintenence and repairs for when it is convenient for me. The combined value is less than $10,000.

I also always carry a .30 cal ammo can with tools in it in case I have a breakdown. Because of this I have "saved the day" for more than a few friends and I have the life skill of being a pretty decent mechanic.

I drive a 96 Honda Accord (KBB value $3,110). I just finished an AR-10 build that cost $1,500 more than the value of my car alone (With scope). I started my rifle collection when I was 12 and my handgun collection when I turned 21 4 years ago. Now my total collection is worth about 8.5x the value of my car.

Let's see, my 2005 Ford Escursion is worth about 15 grand now, so, that makes my collection of guns worth more.

Ok, ....you asked

I HAVE been collecting for a long time. My purchases were in proportion to income and needs/priorities at the time. And still are. Currently we are saving to send bamaboy to college.

I buy nice guns, but nothing extravagant. No new four figure price tags, ever. My collection is worth more than any truck I've ever owned, or wife's car for that matter too.

My guns will last several lifetimes, I have some heirlooms that are on their 3rd generation and as useful and effective as when they were new. They are also worth 3-5 x their purchase price in some cases, Grandad would never believe it.

I have always viewed a vehicle as something that keeps you from walking. My new truck, ...why its a '91 Toyota. My woods truck.......its an '85 Bronco, and looks it. I've only owned one other, and finally sold it for $500 bucks after 16 years. Got them all used to start. I will never own a new vehicle.

Bama wife has fared better, and has driven newer Hondas, but she is precious and oft times was hauling bamaboy when he was a tyke, so a newer, more reliable veh for her mattered. NOne of hers were new though, either. Her current ride is an '01 Toy and she complains not a wit. Typically, we get 175,00 miles plus from an import. The old Bronco has 135K on it.

Dirty Harry didn't say it, exactly (he liked good guns too!)....but could have, and I'm teaching it to bamaboy......."a man's got to have his priorities".......

My '06 Avalon is worth about $15.5k, after the whole recall mess drove it's value down about 15% . Still worth more than my gun collection, but that'll probably change in the next few years.

Of course, the other car in the household is an '04 Honda Odyssey worth around $12k. Guess that means I need to buy a bunch more guns :D . Both cars are paid for, so I ought to get started quickly.

I voted for guns but it's probably pretty close. I drive a basic, stripped down 2009 Vibe that's already got 57K on it. I like my guns better!

I drive an 04 Honda Accord EX (love my car,Honda is a+). Blue book is around 10k. I own three guns worth about 1650. Both pale compared to the 75k of law school loan debt I will soon have.

I have a FAL worth more than the "Skipper":

But the Bride sort of tips the scale towards automobiles...:p

I drive an 11 year-old Ford Explorer...

My modest collection is worth considerably more than the Ford, but it is reliable and accomplishes its task of getting me from A to B.

My gun collection is worth way more than my car. I have been collecting for 27 years though, so after that amount of time it adds up.

Just actually bought a new car. I am driving a small vehicle now since I have to do a lot of travelling for work. I wanted something that got good mileage so I downsized.
Although even my most expensive vehicle was less than my gun collection. That used to be a Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab Dually.

The same

My car is worth about $25,000 (year old Lexus), but I lease it. And I have 40 handguns worth about $25,000. So I guess they are worth the same.
