Why don't I want a Mosin Nagant?

I own a large number of military surplus rifles(or at least what most people consider a large number). I've shot a lot of them. the mosin nagant rates at the absolute bottom of the barrel. they are just crudely executed rifles. the cheap ammo does not lend itself to accuracy which is already an issue for the rushed wartime produced rifles which compose the vast majority of the guns on the market.

mosin nagants are going up in price and now that they have essentially broken the $200 mark, other guns like Arisakas are much better for a guy on a budget. true the ammo is not easy to get a hold of, but for reloaders they are just as cheap to feed as any other military surplus rifle.

Since Tahunua said so it was be law.

The Mosin Nagant is a crudely executed rifle. They are all junk and should be melted down.

Glad he could clear that up for us!

^ Sound good to me! But the legal drinking age should be reduced.

At least all the garbage Mosin Nagant will be take care of! :D

JUST JOSHIN' YA!!!!

Really, I challenge anyone out there to get a better full-power rifle for under $150. It just ain't gonna happen. No, the Moisten Nugget is not the greatest rifle ever, but it's cheap, reliable, POWERFUL, and shoots a cheap, reliable, POWERFUL shell.

That's good enough for this cowboy.

I do appreciate that brave peasants defeated the nazi. Those nazi's get credit from some on the net for their weapons, uniforms or heel clicking however they are losers.

A picture of the rifle is enough for me.

We should have should have a fake Presidential Election here on TFL. With debates and all. I nominate DPris and tahunua001. :D

I agree, the Mosin is a very good rifle for what it is. im thinking of starting to hand load for mine. If there are any dedicated "Mosin fan boys" like me, I recommend taking a stroll over the Russian-Mosin Nagant forum. I like it for all the pictures and help. :D.

my point was that for $150, that is not outside the realm of the Japanese Arisaka, and if you are looking for QUALITY ammo, the mosin nagant no longer shoots a cheap affordable round. if you are looking for something that you could hunt with, compete with, or god forbid defend yourself with, you aren't going to be using spam can, 1960s, surplus ammo for those purposes, and you aren't going to be practicing with ammo that you are not going to be using for those purposes. now if you are buying a gun for no other reason than to shoot holes in paper and all you want is to hit the paper and not shoot for tight groups then by all means, buy the mosin nagant.

back when they were $80 dollar rifles and spam cans were still $70, and the Arisaka was still a $150 dollar rifle with no cheap ammo(which was only a few short years ago), yes they were a great value and had no equal in the price range. however, $150 is not easily attainable, online yes you see them all the time but after $50 shipping and $25 FFL fees that's still a $225 rifle and $100 spam cans are not really all that cheap for the accuracy that you are getting.

that's all I'm saying

I will not run, I'd break the interweb.
I nominate Art Eatman to run in my place.

Who pays a FFL transfer fee on a Mosin? You mean there are actually people who don't have a ten dollars per year C&R FFL?:D
If I had to pay twenty five bucks for every milsurp I have bought I could have bought a Kimber 84 Classic!

I've got a system worked out.

The K-31 is my group rifle.
The Mosin is my fun plinker & hole puncher.

Still wanting to get a scope mount for the K-31. (The Clamp on ones).

Do I expect tack driving accuracy with a Mosin? No. But I get reasonable accuracy.

Do I expect tack driving accuracy with my K-31 using handloads? Yes. I'm still working on that, but that's just me, not the rifle.

Just where do you find an excellent condition, arsenal refinished Arisaka for $150?
That's the condition of every M/N I have, and the prices ranged from $75 to $120!

how many of those arsenal refinished mosin nagants shoot 2 MOA or better?
That wasn't the question. Where are the excellent Arisaka's for a buck and a half?
All of my Mosins hit what they were built to hit. Even an M44 Hungarian with a bore that looks like a gravel road. Papar plates at 100 yards. Good enough for man or beast. Plenty good enough for an afternoon of shooting.
If I want tac driving I'll use my custom 98 Mauser heavy varmint barreld 6MM Remington chambered varmint rifle, or my Remington 700 custom built 7MM Remington Magnum. Actually, my Romanian PSL with that cheap, crappy surplus 7.62X54r ammo is closer to 1MOA! But that isn't a hunnerd dollar Mosin. It just uses the same crappy ammo!

Actually, I haven't seen a cracked stock, pitted, beat up Arisaka in a gun show around here for as little as a buck and a half for many years. Let alone one I would even consider shooting. Believe me, if I had I would have bought it.:D

gunshow prices are hardly indicative of actual retail value. gunshow mosin nagant prices around here are about $300. sporterized rifles sell for nearly the blue book of original condition rifles.

I'm talking about actual retail value. those factory refinished rifles, which the term refinished is used pretty loosely from personal experience, still have gouged out crowns, dented handguards, peeling, flaking shellac, and worn parkerizing, especially on the wartime rifles with bad tool marks. you are overselling the term "arsenal refinished" here as an indication of the overally condition of the rifle.

Then we'll try online auctions. Most everything I see in an Arisaka is between $250 and $750.
Still looking for a decent one for $150 though. There was one as I described. Cracked stock, and pretty beat up looking for a hunnerd and a half though.

try looking at mosin nagants on gunbroker as well. asside from sporterized and chinese Ufixems, most are advertized at $190-$950. not a whole lot of difference there.

I'm growing tired of this argument but here is a type 38 with no reserve for $116 at the moment

here's a rare type I made by Italy with no reserve for $106 currently

here's a type 99 with a beautiful stock(and some pitting on the safety knob) for $185 and no reserve.

and just for the purpose of cherry picking to really drive some folks crazy,
here's a round receiver, izzy, mosin nagant, 91/30, with peeling shellac(went through an arsenal refinish) with a buy it now price of $275
