Wheelguns Are For "Oldtimers"??

Tamara, I hate to admit this....

but the seizure of the Pueblo was "current events" for me! Then again, so was the attack on Fort Sumter.

Having been born in that gray period between the domestication of fire and the development of the wheel....... I like revolvers.

I have a very nice Colt LW Commander in 45 awfulmatic that is rather dear to me, but I often carry a cut down M10 S&W or a 581 S&W with me. On long car trips, a 7.5" Ruger Blackhawk sometimes serves in the place of a light rifle.

Breaking News! Tuesday I get to pick up another revolver.
I'd been looking for a Smith K-38 to use in the PPC "Distinguished Match". I found one at a local gun show. The gentleman had a tag of $275 on it, and the blue looked good.
I picked it up and felt the cylinder; no play or endplay.
Then I counted all five screws.......
Almost hurt myself getting the money out of my pocket.

correction: "WHEELGUNS ARE FOR THINKERS"

Up until the hi-cap ban I was all wheel............and my "always" goes around.............

The giveaway in the original post is the bit about 'gunwriters'.

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.
Those who haven't got a clue, write in a contemporary gunrag.

I 'guess' I qualify as an oldtimer (as most who are posting age seem to be at least a few less than me).

Yep, I have a couple of wheelguns (and am always looking for more).

I also own more semi's than that, from 1911's to tupperware. What I use on a given day depends on many factors, and I carry the 'best fit' for required function. Sometimes a wheelgun, sometimes not.

Many 'old-timers' cut thier handgun teeth on the 1911, in serious duty, and have done more 'real combat' shooting with it than any other gun, by any 'gunwriter'...

One should think, before publishing, methinks.

Well.....at 55, my favorites would be my pair of "28's"!

So far you "youngins" all are old enough to be my kids! I owned one of the first stainless steel S & W Model 60 38 J Frames in the State of Massachusetts. Hows that for dating yourself -1973-74. You cannot imagine how excited I was to be able to purchase a stainless steel handgun back then . My favorite now is the S & W 629 44 mag in Classic DX which I reload for and shoot every weekend on the outdoor range. Although I do own many semi-auto's revolvers are the absolute. My age 61 + and counting. Hats off to Rich for getting this Forum up and running again. I certainly missed the chat while TFL was down.

Started out with handguns by purchasing my first weapon, a S&W 686 at the tender young age of 22. That was 14 years ago and now I own nuthing but autos for the moment. But thats gonna be short lived cause I got the wife a G19 to replace the .357 but she still likes the wheelguns better. She loves the magnum rounds. Guess thats why she married me.:D

OK, I'll share.......

Will Rogers once said he never met a man he didn't like. Well, I'm the "Will Rogers" of handguns. I've never met one I didn't like.

I'm 56 and my current favorite is my newest one: A slightly-used Smith and Wesson Model 638 Bodyguard.

I like'em all - revolvers and semi-autos but for life threatening self defense, give me my trusty revolver.

I was born the year Barbie was but I have always preferred steel to plastic.... my favorite revolver is my Rossi 2" 877 but, I expect the GP100 I just ordered while TFL was down will take first place honors when it arrives

I'm 24 and have always had an affection for handguns of all types. When I was in highschool I wanted a Royal Blue 6in Python more than my next breath. unfortuantly, I never got that Python, and when I started buying handguns, it was mostly autos. About 2 years ago, I picked up a polished stainless Vaquero (talk about getting funny looks at the range with that sitting next to my usual carbon-fiber, polymer, titanium, etc hardware), and instantly wondered why I didnt have more wheelguns. Last Valentines day, my wonderfull wife suprised me with a pre-agreement 4in 686. I have yet to make a range outing without it. It can tackle the plate machine with greater consistancy and equal speed as my autos, and hammer the plates with more authority than 99% of my semi's. When the range starts getting close to rifle territory, even with the modest barrel, the revolver continues to shine. I would be hesitant to say its more accurate, but it definatly takes less effore to hit consistantly. Even though my ratio is 2/a few dozen, I'm definatly sold on the 6-gun.
must have an n-frame snubby!!!!

welcome to the oldmans club !! boy I wish I had a wife like that , hang on to her shes definately a keeper , she got a sister ???:D

I'm 26 and I've owned and carried a S&W model 60 for some time now. When I was in my early teens I competed actively with a stock K22 and a K38, even than I preferred the revolvers to the auto's even though I had both a Clark 45 and a heavily customized S&W model 41 at my disposal. I always had a deep appreciation for the old time pistol shooters who competed so well with the now archaic revolvers of their time.

Age: 42
Years shooting: 30
Number of revolvers: 5
Number of Autos: 6
Preference: revolvers
Current CCW: Ruger SP-101, .357, Shot 100 rounds of full magnum from this little flame thrower yesterday. Had a great time.
Newest aquisition: S&W 24, 3inch, round butt, Lew Horton run in 1983-84, 1000 made.
Next planned aquisition: Ruger GP-100, 4inch, stainless

Well , I don't think of myself as an oldtimer at 43 maybe middleaged ;) But what I love about the wheelgun is they are southpaw friendly :) as a lefty it just seemed like the semi's I wanted needed a conversion or would be a pain to use for a lefty. Not the only reason to love a wheelgun but important to me:D

This age thing has a way of creeping up on a person. I was 18 until I turned 30 just last week and now I am almost halfway to 40. Dang nab it, those years just fly! The 1990's went by when I just blinked and its like I am still wondering what happend to the 1980's.

REVOLVERS

Carbon_15:
Oh Yeah on the 686, probably the finest 357 made, but I hate the rubber grips. On my 686 I have the old finger grooved wood grips by Smith which you cannot purchase any longer. Everything about the 686 is perfection. It will last you a lifetime. Best of luck

Have attained the ripe old age of 41. Came back to revolvers
after a few years. Carry a Taurus titanium .44 special for off-duty
carry. I was rather impressed with Taurus so I am awaiting a
model 608 4 incher to arrive. Only allowed a semi for work,
but I think I'd be comfortable with a wheelgun.

Have a good one!

HEY YOU, WHO YOU CALLIN' AN OLD TIMER, WHIPPERSNAPPER

I'm 97 years old but I look purty good for my age if I do say so myself, and I do.
Let me tell you something right here and now, sonny boy. Not only are those shellshuckin' sumbiscuits in those puny assed little itty bitty cartridges nothin' more than a passing fancy, I ain't too sure 'bout those newfangled double action sixguns either.
If you can't settle your squabbles with the five rounds from a good single action revolver there is probably something missing in your moral fiber, personal convictions, and you may well even be one a them ther demorats that keep muckin' up the works.
now you get your wet-behind-the-ears butt out there and buy yourself a real gun, A SINGLE ACTION SIXGUN IN 45 COLT before you get home tonight.
YOU HEAR ME BOY...?
I have spoken.
Dismissed.
nonono, the gun shop is the other way....geesh

Herb, that was my first mental comment about the revolver. "what is that black stuff growing where the wood should be?"
I ordered a set of Kingwood laminate fingergrove grips for it within a few days of haveing it, but they still havent got here

:D@ terry. Done and done...my first revolver was just as you suggested.
