What is the most overpriced handgun?

Instead of debating how supply & demand works, I'm just going to go ahead and answer the question based on my perspective.

- Hi-Powers. Browning seems to get nine hundo for these. But not from me. There are lots of good used ones out there from many different manufacturers, msot of them good.

- Beretta 84/85. Very nice guns, but $680??!! Not that nice. C'mon Beretta, don't take a page from Browning's playbook.

- Lugers. No one makes new ones, so fair condition used ones fetch $700+. At least they have precision machining that can partially explain their price.

- Period GI 1911s. A beat-up old one goes for $700+. A new one of equal quality can be had for <$500. Purely a collector piece.

- HK anything. They're very nice guns, but not nice enough (to me) to fetch $800+ and $50+ for mags, considering how good their competition is.

at least the five-seven is unique. 1911's are definitely the most over-priced handguns. any of them. even a glock can out-shoot a 1911, and that's saying something!

Yeah, it's saying something untrue. Unless Glock started making 1.5" @ 50 yard guns that have trigger that doesn't feel like a bloody staple gun when I was out taking a leak.

Why does it always have to devolve into a 1911 vs Glock vs CZ thing around here? Where we can only see the positives in one and only the negatives in the other? And even then, its heavily laden with hyperbole and negative spin.:(

1/3rd the price for a kelTec with a caliber very close to but much less expensive for ammo than than 5.7 and 22Mag is easy to find at WalMart

I don't care about what something costs. I care about what I feel the gun is worth. Will I pay for what I believe is skilled workmanship? Sure will. (personally want a DW CBOB still saving money though) I know that I can buy a pistol for around $350 that will do the same basic function as one for $3000. I however have come to a point in my life that I appreciate skill more than mass production. I do have pistols that will be "work horses" only, but I also want that elusive piece of functioning art. So the only things I would consider over priced would be those guns that the seller has inflated the price of an indiviual piece as opposed to all the others of the same type that everyone else is selling of alot less. ie LGS #1 selling for $1000, LGS# 2-100 selling for $800. That is over pricing a gun IMHO.

I don't look down on high priced stuff, I just don't want it. I don't want a gun that I have to worry about cleaning after every round fired, or worry about dings or fingerprints. I don't abuse my guns, but I don't want to have to baby them either.

So how is it that S&W can manufacture and sell a plastic frame stainless slide 9mm pistol for $250 (Sigma) yet another plastic frame stainless slide 9mm sells for $450 (M&P). Do the "better" trigger and plastic grip inserts really cost $200? Really?

Shadi Khalil said in post #16:
"Isn't that the new Ruger 1911? The price is in the $600 range but I'm sure they will eventually come down a bit."

Imagine that - someone makes a relevant statement and the rest of the thread is either wanna be economic theorists spouting off or people making broadsweeping statements like all 1911's are over priced..really???!!!???

Shadi, power to you - my next acquisition will definitely be the Ruger SR1911. IMO, it will be worth every penny. I will be happy to pay $600.00 and believe if I do wait and shop around I'll get it for less.

What's the most over-priced gun? I don't care! If I were very wealthy, I'm sure I'd have a few fine pieces of art in my home. I agree with RobK referring to them as pieces of art. Guns are awesome! If I could, I'd buy one of everything that's made! (well, almost everything, there are some POS I'd stay away from) There are some handguns out there so finely crafted I'd pay a high price just to have and appreciate them. Value, my friends, is an extremely subjective concept. Like opinions (there's lots of them here, including mine) everyone has their own set of values. So for all you posters out there, I'd say YOU ARE ALL CORRECT! Your posts are based on your values. :p

It is one thing to wonder if something is overpriced and another to wonder why something is high priced. They aren't the same but it isn't always obvious why something is priced especially high, unless you see it in a store window on Rodeo Drive, which I have walked down. But one thing has puzzled me for a long time, although it isn't a handgun.

Why are Ruger shotguns nearly double the price of their rifles? Most of the Ruger bolt-actions and No. 1 rifles are beautiful but their shotguns don't look $1,000 better. Is it because they are double-barrels? Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if all double-barrel shotguns weren't very expensive.

I have an HKUSPC, and I firmly believe it was overpriced. Of course I had to have it at the time, but have since learned. It's not $250 better than, say a Glock. It's also not even carried anymore. The gun that replaced it could also be considered overpriced at $950, a Kimber UCDP, but since it has been my EDC for over 7 years, I don't bitch.

I'm thinking quite the same thing. It's time for another 1911 and Ruger has never let me down yet. That is, except the price of their Red-Labels.:(
