Hello NightSleeper,,,
Back in the late 70's I was in the USAF,,,
We Airmen as a rule played a lot of pool and a lot of poker.
One morning after an all night poker game,,,
I found myself in possession of a .17 Remington rifle.
This thing proved to be awesome,,,
That cartridge sped at over 4,000 feet per second.
It was an unbelievable varmint gun,,,
It turned prairie dogs into red mist at great distances.
I think when the people developed the .17 HMR,,,
They were playing off of the notoriety of the .17 Remington.
And it was just a money making thing,,,
There was no need for the round as it filled no gap,,,
It did however provide a cash cow for Hornady if it took off.
An expensive round (relative to the .22 LR cartridge),,,
That couldn't be reloaded is a real money maker,,,
Assuming it takes off and becomes popular.
That's why it was developed,,,
Not to fill a shooting need,,,
But to fill Hornady's bank.
Ain't nothing wrong with that,,,
I just didn't buy into it.
If I want a super performing low caliber cartridge,,,
I want it to be a centerfire cartridge,,,
One that can be reloaded.
