My wife tried many of my handguns trying to find one that worked for her. Part of her problem is that due to a skin condition that affects her hands, she has very limited grip strength (the skin on her hands is very sensitive, so anything requiring much grip strength is quite painful for her). First she carried my 2" S&W M10 which she could shoot well enough, but it was just too big and heavy. Then she switched to my S&W M36, but the DA trigger was challenging after a cylinder or two full. The only semi-autos she could rack the slide on were full-sized ones like my 1911 (which she enjoys shooting very much) and thus too big for her to carry comfortably. What she finally settled on and is quite happy with is a Beretta Tomcat. The tip-up barrel alleviates the need to rack the slide frequently (she can do it once or twice to reload or clear a malfunction) and the .32 ACP offers manageable recoil in a gun that is small and light enough to carry comfortably. We looked at a S&W Shield EZ .380, but it would've been a bit too big to foster program compliance and she just liked the look and feel of the Beretta better (she's not a fan of the look or feel of polymer). Maybe not the universal solution (I don't think there's any such thing) but it's what works for her.
