What do you do?

For arguments sake dude jeez.

Yes, but it's a meaningless question that will only generate anecdotal answers that are equally meaningless. A churchgoer probably will find the people at a church picnic friendly, whereas an atheist at the same party may well find the same percentage of people unfriendly. What does that say about anything? Absolutely nothing, other than friendliness is probably a poor index of morality (leaving aside the tricky questions of defining or quantifying friendliness and morality). This could be extrapolated to the various arguments made that people of brand x politics are more moral, generous, helpful, courageous, hard-working, willing to pet small dogs, etc. than those that adhere to brand y politics. Anecdotal, meaningless, and a waste of an argument. Unless of course you have some actual sociological data to back up some claim ...

Uh...why? Do you think they surround you and interrogate you with bible questions?

I'm not religious at all, but I still find people at church picnics to be friendly.

And sociological data? '...Kay. Conservatives built the financial institutions that we take for granted today. Leftists and socialists constantly try to tear them down. Conservatives built trade networks that bring us all the products we take for granted so cheaply. Leftists enabled the rise of Joseph Stalin, Chairman Mao, Fidel Castro and, currently, they're loving their new leader-becoming-dictator, Hugo Chavez.

In the 20th century, conservatives built things, leftists broke them.

There you go.

Sure, and the next person doesn't, and the next person does, and the next two don't, and the next forty do, and so on and so forth.

Again, who cares? It's a meaningless and anecdotal argument.

(and I've been to a church picnic or two :))

I don't believe in god dude. I'm an athiest. The last church picnic I attended was with my wife. The people knew I was a non believer and treated me with respect and kindness. They didn't change my beliefs but did amaze me with their ability to treat me well despite the knowledge that I didn't believe.

I'm afraid that I have never been treated the same way by any group of liberals even if they don't know how conservative I am.

What group would you expect to have a higher percentage of friendly people in it a church picnic or a rave party?
The rave. The church picnic would be full of people calling me an abomination and telling how I'm going to hell because I don't believe in a telepathic zombie.

Yes. Conservative does not equal religiosity.

A lot of conservatives...who believe in hard work, and who treat people well just because it's the right thing to do...are Goldwater conservatives. That really hasn't anything to do with the extreme Religious Right.

And I agree. I've seen more church sorts who are just NICE people, and more leftists who are, well, if not just selfish, then a sort of anarchistic, antagonistic personality, especially if someone might not agree with them.

Great, bully for you ... yet another anecdotal experience.

Sociological data? Statistics? Something beyond a "one time I went to a church picnic" story? For argument's sake, of course.

Redworm, have you ever BEEN to a church picnic? The only condemnation I've ever heard going on at one was over someone's choice of lawnmower, and it still involved laughter on all sides.

What, would you go in screaming that you're an atheist and that they're all wrong? Or just be nice and get a damned hotdog and talk about football and gardening and cars like everyone else?

Yes, I've been to many. I grew up roman catholic, I've been to baptist, southern baptist, lutheran, presbetyrian, episcopalian, methodist and "nondenominational" sermons and gatherings sponsered by those churches. They still believe all the same thing no matter where they go and if I attend one holding hands with my significant other I will certainly be met with derision and in some areas with a threat to my safety.

The point is that a group's "friendliness" to a person is more dependant on the person in question than the group's political beliefs.

Hmm...well, "leftists" founded this country.

Beat that.

ahhh....gotcha. You're one of the sorts that has to do a demonstrative public display of affection to silently shout your "alternative lifestyle" to the families there.

I don't need data only my personal experiences. There is no doubt in my mind. If you would take the time to go to a church picnic and then hit a liberal gathering of some type (perhaps a homosexual rally) you would also be convinced.

'kay, back at you. I believe those quite a few American/western/whatever financial institutions and trade networks conduct an awful lot of business with those amoral leftists in China and Venezuela. BTW, which financial institutions and trade networks did you have in mind?

 or perhaps I do the exact same thing when I happen to be with a female significant other

 No, I wouldn't.

Or dare walk into Provincetown, Mass as a man and woman couple.

Had never been derisively referred to as a "breeder" before. Though my look sent them running a moment later. Just as well, an earned sock in the jaw probably would have been a "hate crime".

and believe it or not but if you'd been attacked while being called a breeder your assailants would also have been charged with a hate crime

surprise surprise

Redworm and Leif, Being a couple of liberals and obviously hostile toward fellow posters you guys fit the bill perfectly LOL.
