Top 5 favorite rifle cartridges

.22 LR. Great for small game and shoots well in match rifles.

.223 I have shot more cleans in rapid fire with this round than any other. Easy to shoot, cheap to shoot, easy to reload, accurate.

308 Tradition: When you win a match with a 308, you have proved that dinosaurs still walk the earth.

6.5 X 55 Because sometimes you have to go metric.

30-06. When Moses came down from the mountain, in one hand he held the tablets, and in the other, a M1903 Springfield. Good enough for God, good enough for me.

2---.30-30
3---.22 LR
4---.308
5---.223

Runner up
1---.45/70
2---.270
3---.22-250

These are not in any particular order.

1. .30-06. Sure, nowadays, .308 is the preferred .30-caliber round, but I have to go with the '06 purely for the historical factor. It's a great round for hunting, but it takes on a new significance when put through a Garand.

2. 5.56mm. Having spent eight years as an Army infantryman, I have developed a relationship with this round and the AR15 platform like I imagine many other current and former servicemembers have as well.

3. .22LR. Cheap, fun, accurate, cheap, fun, fun, cheap, accurate...I could go on.

4. .308. Good in a rifle, good in a machine gun. It can go the distance and it hits hard, nothing not to like.

5. .50 BMG. Making 90% of all forms of cover obsolete for the better part of a century.

22 LR --- because I hate chasing brass from my centerfires. I shoot this cartridge 100X more than any other

223 --- I like the slow twist in my 223. 1:12 sending my 40 grain vmax puts it into 204 territory. Also helps that I have ~9k rounds of 223 brass waiting to be next in the press.

25-06 --- 115 grain bullets out of these are one of my favorites for where I live & what I do.

22-250 --- I don't know why but I have an odd fascination with this cartridge. Can't explain it but I sure do enjoy it.

_________ --- I'll leave #5 blank in recognition of the next one to buy. Don't have a 30-06 yet but I've found one I really like & am thinking it needs to go in my pile. After that, space #5 will go on to the next cartridge/caliber I don't yet have. No wonder it's called gunBROKER. It makes me exactly that!

I’m replying before reading other posts, just to see how I compare, and not get swayed.

.22LR. If you don’t own a .22LR firearm, you are un-American. (I've got 9)

.223. Good all around, from varmint hunting to self defense. Reasonably priced ammo. NATO round.

.308. With a well placed shot, should be able to take any game animal in North America. NATO round.

.30-06. Tradition, and same as .308.

.30-30. Tradition. Probably taken more deer then any of the above.

Honorable mention…. My 7mmSTW!

270WIN-Hard hitting meat gun.

I'd also like to throw in 45-70 and .308, but they would not be in the top 5 for me

.22lr cheap and fun to shoot
.223 accurate and low recoil, good for game up to whitetail
6mm Remington great medium cartridge
.308 probably the best overall cartridge of all time
30-06 very versatile and can handle bullets larger than the .308 for larger game
