Top 5 favorite rifle cartridges

'06 -- Do-all critter, multi-purpose. And, it's sorta been a family tradition since around 1922.

.220 Swift -- Fun for Ma Bell playing with varmints.

.243 -- Versatile little critter.

.223 -- The Swift's little brother.

.22 rimfire -- It's fun, is what it is.

1. The .223: inexpensive to shoot, excellent high power practice round (vs .22RF), and also an excellent survival round, works on big game in a pinch

2. .270 WSM: excellent longe-range capabilities, nearly on a par with .257 and .270WBY, enough said

3. .308 Win: perfect all-around S/A CXP2 and 3(in a pinch) caliber. Bulk ammo still fairly inexpensive.

4. .35 Whelen: way better than it's popularity would show. Out to 300yds no game would know the difference between being smacked with a 250gr from it or a .338WM and has the added benifit of shooting with recoil like a 30/06 with 180 or 200gr bullets for deer.

5. 45/70: I also own a .444(a bit flatter) and .450M(a bit more powerful), but the 45/70 is the most versatile giving 200yd MPBR with LE ammo and serious stopping power with 400gr (or larger) loads

OK, I'll play
1- 22LR just because
2- 22-250 for those times when you just gotta
3- 7X57. If it was good enough for W D M Bell, why not?
4- 8X57, I just love those 57mm cases
5- 375 H&H,, there's nothing on the planet short of a blue whale I wouldn't use it on, and I can't eat a whole whale.

• .22lr – Everyone should own one of these.

• .223/5.56mm – Good small to medium game round, targets, and the current service round.

• .30-30 – Nostalgia in a lever gun.

• .30-06 – Ubiquitous round from mid-twentieth century wars (M1) to an excellent medium to large game round without any "magnum" silliness.

• .357 mag – I don't own one of these, in fact, never shot one in a rifle, but always thought it would be a good idea!

204 ruger -don't even have one but looking for long range plinker and coyote getter and this seems to perform beyond expectations.

6mm Remington- the 24 that sould have been. Versatile, easy recoiling, fun and deadly through deer sized animals. Just a shade better but a bit cooler than a 243.

260 Rem- extremely versatile, velocities seem so in tune with bullet weights to maximize performance. Best White tail performance I have ever seen (140 Sierras- again speed and weight thing) and still a bit of a hidden gem.

270Win- frickin' built for deer at any range. No other explanation necessary. Basically a magnum with out the "M".

44mag lever action - just a thumping good time when open sites are needed for things up close. Enough lead to stop things that might get mad at you.

My favorites?
22lr......great for plinking and small game.
22-250......great for varmits.
25-06......great for medium size game and long range.
300 WM.....great for medium to large game and long range.
378WBY..... for the big boys.

44mag....great handcannon.

1- .357 Marlin lever gun Grandma's 50th anniv. present from grandpa. Now it's mine and I wouldn't go on a deer drive without it. 2- .308 Tack driver and deer killin machine. 3- .223 only black gun I've ever owned, now I want more. 4- .45Colt slow bullet really big holes, and theres just something about a low slung six. 5-30-06 Straight KILLER.

1. 6.5-284 winchester - uses the same sleek 6.5mm bullets as .260 but can push em at about 100 more fps than .260.

2. .260 remington - Very low recoil, phenominal BC, Great long range and hunting round.

3. .308 winchester - .30 cal has been around for years, Yes it has more wind drift than the 6.5 but when i shoot i know i got a big fat decently heavy round. Also like watching the curve of the bullet at certain ranges.

4. .338 Lapua Magnum - Kills up to 2100yds away, super big 200gr bullets high BC, armor penetration

5. Cheytac .408 - Hand made bullets, superb accuracy, Fast as hell for 400gr bullet. Just really an outstanding achievment

Blackops

Do you mean 250 or 300 gr bullets? The 200 gr .338 aint so great in the B.C. category, goes fast though.

4. .338 Lapua Magnum - Kills up to 2100yds away, super big 200gr bullets high BC, armor penetration

5. Cheytac .408 - Hand made bullets, superb accuracy, Fast as hell for 400gr bullet. Just really an outstanding achievment

B-ops2,

You got both of these rifles? Just wondering how they perform for you? Have a buddy who had an HS Precision in .338 Lapua, but never got to play with it before he sold it.
