220 Swift - When you absolutely, positively have to splatter a prarie dog, accept no substitute.

22-250 Remington - See above, except slightly less splatter.

243 Winchester - True all purpose cartridge.

25-06 Remington - The other true all purpose cartridge.

300 WSM - Forget this all purpose crap, now you can shoot big stuff.

243 Winchester - True all purpose cartridge.

25-06 Remington - The other true all purpose cartridge.

.....so long as you don't shoot anything bigger than a deer..... meh-bee you could call them "True most purposes cartridges."

.270 - listed in the encyclopedia under "All purpose" ; )
.22LR - everyone should own one!
.30-30 - iconic lever action cartridge. I took my first whitetail with grandpa's model 94

All I know is what I play on Call of Duty, and I am deadly with my M16.
600 yard kill zone is hard to get around and it is the most accurate rife I have played with.
I am saving up now to get my M16 in real life

That could be the funniest thing I've read this year. Sort of scary too when you think about it.

.22lr 'cause it's cheap and you can feed the family with it really well.
30-30 'cause it was my grand dad's choice.
30.06 'cause it was my dad's choice.
17 Mach 2 'cause it's quirky and freakin deadly accurate.
.223 'cause it's also cheap to shoot and a couple of my fave rifles use it.

I posted in this thread's infancy and since then I must add the 204 Ruger. So much so that since my original post in May '09 I have aquired 4 of them.

1) .22-.250 My favorite predator caliber.

2) .243 All around predator/deer/black bear rifle.

3) .308 Deer/Elk/Black Bear

4) .300 WM Elk/Moose

5) .22 LR Just because everyone should have one.

17HMR - great for rock chucks
223 - Same as above
243 - great for deer as well as chucks
300wm - Great for everything
45-70 - Just fun to shoot as well as my favorite for handloading

  • .22 Long Rifle - Fun, inexpensive, great for small game and targets. Great for introducing new shooters.
  • 44 Magnum - Again, very versatile, especially to the handloader. It can be loaded to feel and shoot like 38 Special, or as a full-house magnum. Really fun to shoot, both out of revolvers and lever action rifles. It can be a 100 yard big-game rifle, and loaded with Specials for cowboy action or 3-gun shooting.
  • .243 Winchester - Again, very versatile. Loaded toward the hot end with 105 gr. bullets, it is a perfect deer round. Loaded with lighter bullets, it is a perfect varmint or target round. Doesn't beat up the shoulder too badly.
  • .223 Remington - Great for targets, light recoil. Great prices on bulk ammo due to all the AR guys. Can be loaded in a bolt action rifle with handloads for serious accuracy.
  • 30-30 Winchester - Good 200 yard big game gun. 250 yards with Leverevolution bullets. Same ballistics as the 7.62x39; maybe a bit better with spire point bullets. Again, not too hard on the shoulder like 30-06 or the magnums, but enough juice to get the job done. Ammo's affordable and found everywhere. Great classic lever action cartridge.

only 3

30-06 springfield- its worked for over 100 years

375 H&H- see above. a great all around caliber for alaska. less meat damage than a 300 magnum.

22 lr- no explanation nessecary

1. 30-06: Maybe the most versatile centerfire caliber

2. 243: Just right for those occasions when the 30-06 is too much

3. 223: Got big varmints?

4. 22 magnum: Superb small game getter

5. 22LR: plinker, paper puncher, pest control

I'm not likely to go on an African safari. These'll do.

1. .223

2. .243

3. 30-06

4. 17HMR

5. 22LR

I think these calibers cover the whole spectrum of what you would need. They cover everything you could possibly want to shoot. Add a 12ga. and you would be set.

mine

No order

1. .22 lr-everybody knows why, ......practice, affordable, handles most small game just fine most of the time. Anybody doesn't list it is likely not shooting enough!

2. 30-'06-mainly for historical reasons. I've never killed a single game animal w/ an '06, though I was hard on a pack of feral dogs on my hunt club w/ my Garand! Great eliminator of fascists/socialists and at least one pair of cop killing bank robbers. The list of legendary firearms chambered in same is considerable, Browning 1917, 1919, BAR, Garand, '03 Springfield, P17. Teddy R., one of my all time real heroes, took one to Africa. Alvin York likely used either a P17 in 06, or maybe a Springfield in his MOH action. So did Sam Woodfill(?) at about the same time, though less publicized. Audie Murphy mentions the "accuracy (or was it power) of a Garand" in his book. Patton praised the Garand, chambered in 'O6 of course. Subora Saikai (?) a Japanese Zero ace, was critically injured by an "06 bullet. Carlos Hathcock and the early Marine Snipers carried Win M70 "06's. The cartridge has been in the hands of our fighting men, in mounts on their vehicles, and in the turrets and wings of their aircraft for many combats. Sorry, I guess I'll move on.

3. .223-it took me awhile to warm up to this number, and the fact that the M16/AR is chambered in same did NOT sway me. What did was my purchase of an early Interarms Mini-Mauser and starting bamaboy with it as his first centerfire. Boy took his first 3 whitetails with the round and a proper bullet. We load and shoot it about as much as any rife/round, one reason 'cause its affordable, and the other, the little rifle is such a joy to carry and shoot. It is not as fast, flat or accurate as my 22-250 varminter, but it works well for shots at most varmints to 300+/-. A clumsy attempt at improving the Mini-Mauser accuracy has it on the sick list presently, but the Dr is considering his next move.

4. 7.62x39mm-yikes, after my patriotic rage above, this may seem odd, it is the "other guys" and an enemies cartridge, even to this date. But as a sporting round, it slips neatly into the .30-30 power range, and is easily found in modern, easily scoped rifles (mines a Ruger M77-II) . So chambered, they carry easy, have good triggers and a simple straight forward manual of arms (bolts are plenty simple to learn) and serve well for deer and hogs and I guess black bear maybe. The Ruger m77 will shoot into a 1.5 at 100, recoil is nill, and every deer the boy and I have tagged with it, either from the M77 or a Mini-30, have gotten just as dead, just as quickly, as with anything bigger. A .30 cal, medium power rifle, again, ala .30-30 does much of what most of us need a rifle to do. NOTE I did NOT mention the AK or the SKS.

5. .308-another US fighting cartridge that has found favor in the field as well. I killed my first whitetail with my grandad's Win M88 in .308 and now launch a bunch of them annually at distances Pap, my great uncles, uncles and Dad would consider absurd, all to punch holes in paper. The M88 is in the safe, semi-retired. The Savage Scout kills a deer every couple years, especially if bow season is tough. An agency M14 is in a rack in the trunk as the "bigger hammer". The M14 had come out of mothballs in
our current war in the dessert. The GP M240 is highly thought of I hear by our troops. Current snipers and LE Marksman commonly have a bolt gun in .308.

Wish I could mention the .270, Jack would be dissappointed if I didn't.

.22 lr - to echo everyone else and to add that it was the first caliber I ever shot.
.257 RP - great wildcat round based off of the .308
.270 win- I've achieved dime sized groups in an antelope/deer rifle with hand loads.
.30-06 - so much history! from the marines in wwi with 1903's to snipers in vietnam...nuff said.
45-70 - kicks less than my .270. :)

1. .22 long rifle great for swall game up to Racoon 2. 30 06 Good for Deer and hogs 3. .308 Good Carbine Round 4. .375 HH Mag Good for dangerous game 5. 8MM Mauser I Just like it.
