The Walmart Ammo thread

KyJim

Then, yesterday, I happened to see they had some boxes of 100 rounds of WWB in FMJ in .45 acp for $32.80 a box. I got two boxes and left a box.

That's class to leave a box for the next guy.

The old guy (My buddy) in the sporting goods at my WM told me about a person that was buying out all the 9mm in front of a guy that really needed a (one) box of 9mm to qualify, and he ask the guy in front if he could spare a box.
The guy in front told him to go to hill.

I had a similar situation with Fed 555 22lr at WM. The guy in front of me was eyeing them 4 box's, and I asked him if he was buying 22lr, he said "yes". Are you buying all of them I said, he said "yes". I asked him if he could at least let me have a box. He turned and look at the ammo and hesitated, "well,...I guess.

There was somebody in front of use both buying something, so we got talking guns. I asked him if he was going shooting. He said "No, I'm just buying them to have them, I just bought a rifle."

Being happy he spared me a box, I told him I target practice at the range "All the time" with my little 22 handgun.

So the old guy pull's out the 4 box's and say's to the guy "do you want all 4 box's?" He said no ones for him, and I graciously thanks him for at least one box.

He turns to me and says, "Do you want another box?" I declined telling him I was just happy to get one (All though, I did want it).

While the old guy was ringing him up we were talking and quietly we both revealed we were both carry little .38spl in our pockets. I pated on my bulge, and he did the same, and we both smiled at each other.

Wow... reading through most of this thread I can't believe anyone would walk in to a Wal*Mart, and seriously ask any staff member about anything they sell, let alone guns & ammo. Wal*Mart trains everyone as a cashier first, and if lucky, you might get to work in a department where you stock items etc. But that has nothing to do with actual product knowledge, and Wal*Mart doesn't teach it.

My first "real job" ten years ago was working in Sporting Goods at a Wal*Mart in CT. The department head actually knew quite a bit about guns & ammo, it was a hobby of his, but he only worked maybe 3 days a week, and only in the morning. The only "training" we received regarding the selling of guns and anmo where the specifics to CT state law regarding such, that was it. Other than that, to actually sell the gun you had to pass a state test. Ammo was just like any other item in the store. We didn't have any stupid no ammo after 9p or other stupid rules that I see at Wal*Mart nowadays.

But this goes for anything in the store. Their employees are not merchandise experts. They are trained to stock, direct and cashier, that's it, so expecting any more than that, you might as well work there too.

My time working there I never had any "regulars", and really we didn't sell much ammo. Maybe a two or three guns a month, but not so much ammo. And we had 3 dedicated sporting goods employees, and someone was always in the area.

Now when I go to my local Wal*Mart in VA, I'll be lucky to find anyone behind the counter, let alone in the department. They generally always have a few boxes of 9mm, and I often pick up some .40 for a buddy. .223 and .308 is getting scarce there though, so I hit up the local gunshop for those.

Honestly, I've always kinda disliked walmart. But I gotta say- without em, the prices on ammo would be so astronomical, I couldnt shoot! I feel they've kept the other ammo dealers somewhat honest with their prices. What I have been wondering about, though, is If there's a shortage of ammo (which there seems to be in many areas and for quite a while) and everyone keeps losing their jobs, why not put people to work making ammo???:D

Road trip -- 120 miles, 8 stores, and no ammo!

I just up and decided to drive to every store I could think of within 50 miles that sells larger boxes of ammo. I got online and made a trip-loop map to hit them all. I went to 5 Wal-Marts, a couple farm stores, and Cabelas superstore. NO 9mm AMMO AT ALL IN ALL THOSE STORES!!! Huge empty shelf spaces where they normally have it. Even Cabelas was COMPLETELY OUT, and could not tell me when they would be getting any. I thought sure there would be ammo SOMEWHERE. Don't the ammunition manufacturers want to make money?

One theory I had is that with all the propaganda (think invisible "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq...) about Iran -- including this week's Newsweek which basicaly says Iran is "hell" on the cover -- is that the military put in a big order for ammunition and they are getting ready for war in Iran?? Help me out here, people! Any ideas? This 9mm shortage is ridiculous!

The manufacturers can crank out millions of rounds a month, so where are they? I am sure there are no shortage of willing employees! (good point Zombieslayer..)

They're cranking them out and scared/freaked out people are buying them just as fast as they can crank them out.

Just saw a guy trying to start a rumor on another forum that the government was going to buy all the ammo that the ammo companies could make for the next few years to keep it away from the civilian market. Too many people spreading those kinds of rumors and too many people who believe the rumors and go buy everything they can find so that they can keep shooting even after the sky falls.
I am sure there are no shortage of willing employees!
From what I can gather the ammo makers are already running around the clock. To add more employees they would have to add equipment for them to operate and floor space for the employees and equipment. If this shortage evaporates in a month or two what are they going to do with all the equipment and floorspace they bought to meet temporary demand?

Walmart does seem to keep the ammo prices down

but it does not do much good when they get little in. The stores I shop are within 50 miles of the main Wally World warehouse complexes in Arkansas, and the sporting goods guys say it is still a total roll of the dice what, if anything, they receive. Irritatingly, the local stores have begun staggering the day they put out what they receive so you can't anticipate getting a crack at what they do put out.
The local sporting goods and gun shops have a fair stock of most anything except 380 acp and this is expensive if they do have it. 45 auto still seems to be in generally shorter supply, though all the stors tell me it is a dice roll what they get in as far as make - they take anything they can get. So around here, you can get the ammo if you are willing to pay the price.

I scored some 9mm earlier today. I've been checking this particular store a lot lately and not having much luck but decided to check as I was passing by today. There was noone to be found near the ammo cabinet as usual but there were about 20 fifty round boxes of WWB sitting on the counter waiting to be stocked. I just grabbed some and took it over to automotive and checked out.

went to store early on black Friday---BINGO!

On black friday I was able to get several boxes of wwb ammo. I got 4 boxes of 50 at one store that OPENED REALLY EARLY that day for black Friday (I was there when they opened, lol) then left there and I even got 4 boxes of 100 at Wal-Mart!!! (left 4 on the shelf) Now I can relax a little. I can easily shoot 100 rounds in about an hour at the range so now im happy for a while anyway.

One wierd thing I thought I should mention about the ammo-- Winchester is pulling out all the stops to re-supply the shelves it seems. in the 100-round boxes I noticed a few NATO rounds -- marked with the circle with 4 dots etc. which I had never seen before in a box of their store ammo, LOL. Then I opened another box to look and they had over 1/2 the box NATO rounds! The next box had only 3 of their "9mm luger" marked normal consumer rounds, the rest ALL NATO marked. Sure I want ammo, but lets hope our friends in Iraq and Afghanistan don't have a shortage! Lol.

Serously, I think they are just using every shred of cases / stock on hand to meet the demand, which is cool. Stock IS appearing, so check your store again for your christmas ammo!

Shop around -- it might take some looking , but ammo is out there .
There seems to be plenty of ammo available on the net. Prices have been dropping. A few misguided individuals are finding that it it is difficult or impossible to sell their "for profit " hoard at hoped for scalper prices. Check out Gunbroker -- there are tons of Walmart ammo at stupid prices.

I don't buy any of it.

i went on a wild goose chase last Tuesday basically out of curiousity. I went to 3 Walmarts and 2 Dicks sports. I was looking for .38 and .357. In my travels i was able to find a box of 130gr. fmj .38 at Dicks and a box of 110gr. sjhp .357 at walmart. I did see a good amount of .44. Of course I saw countless .40 and 9mm.

My friend told me Dicks had a buy 1 get 1 sale on ammo at dicks on black friday. was that so, because thats a darn good deal.

All that being said I can get most any ammo at a local gun shop.

Yes, but it was by coupon only and lasted until 2pm.

Wow, thats really strange!

Well...I about passed out today. I went into Wally World looking for 9mm. There are 2 on my way home from work and I always stop by every few days. Well, today I didn't find any 9mm, but I actually found 45 in the 100 round boxes!!!! I haven't seen 45 on the shelf in a year! I've now got 500 45 rounds. And yes, I buy it to shoot it. It'll be gone in a few weeks. LOL

Now, if they'd just get 9mm on the shelf! I've gotten a few 50rd boxes here and there, but man...I want to see those 250 round boxes back!

My biggest issue with Walmart ammo, is the terribly slow restock of the primary handgun cartridges. You may wait 6 weeks to get 1 or 2 cases of 9mm value pack and it will be gone with 2 hours. I know they only alot a certain quantity per store, but you would think with their buying power they could lean on the mfgs a little harder.

had a good turnout today. They had five 100 round boxes of .38 WWB and two boxes of UMC .38. Its just luck of the draw at this point. I saw a few boxes .45 autos too.
