The Walmart Ammo thread

the wal-marts i've visited here in ky. don't have a cut off time for ammo, they won't sell a gun between 10pm and 8am tho. in tompkinsville wal-mart they have a couple of people working that know about guns, the guy there told me about my new england surviver. i'm glad he did best deal on a 308 i know of, and he knows the different types of guns too. hope he stays there, but i know he will probably be moved cause it seems that sporting goods is where they train the new employees.

I went to our new local Walmart and they were out of .22LR Bricks. Brank spankin' new store too. :( I guess a lot of other fellas had the same idea I had.

I was recently on a business trip to Omaha away from my usual Walmart, which has been out of handgun ammo including 22 for over 6 months. Sorry to those in Omaha, I bought out the last 550 pack of Remington Goldens from one store (at $15.97) and bought two more Federal Value Packs at another Walmart (but left two behind for those to follow).

Yes, I was asked the usual "is it for a pistol or a rifle" at both stores...and I smiled and answered "rifle". And no, the question doesn't upset me at all; ask a stupid question and I'm happy to give you any answer you want as long as I get what I want. One of the sales clerks (20ish girl) smiled in response to me saying it was for a rifle and asked "sure that it's not for a pistol?" There is some hope for youth.

As much as I find Walmart distasteful, I stopped there last night on my way home from the range. And wouldn't you know it, but they had boxes of .22lr, 9mm, .40, and .45acp. So I picked up 2200 rounds of the .22 for $65, leaving 3 or 4 more boxes sitting there. They didn't have tons of everything else, but it was enough that someone could have come in and bought enough for a few good trips to the range.

Wally World is one of the few retailers who haven't tried to get rich quick during the Obomination of America. Local W-W stores are selling ammo at about the same price it was last year. Federal .270, .243, .308, 7mm Rem mag, and .30-06 is selling for $13.97 for 20. Win gray box and Rem green box is selling for $16.97. Most of the local Mom&Pops are charging over $20.00 a box. I know they don't have the massive purchasing power of W-W but I've seen them in W-W buying ammo for their stores. W-W employees don't have much knowledge about guns but most of them are helpful and curteous. When they're not, I don't take it personally. We all have a bad day every now and then.

While I'm not a huge fan of wal mart business practices, this is one of the reasons why I continue to shop there. Wal mart has, in certain ways, been inovative to American society. I am a capitalist. With that, consumers vote with their dollars and use good sense (moral and financial) to cast those votes. For all of wal marts evils (lousy treatment of employees, intimidating distributers, etc.), they have also brought great innovations to our markets. I bet no one hear ever heard of $4 dollar generic prescriptions before wal mart. Or ammo that wasn't 3 times more expensive than it should be these days.

With that said, I only buy ammo and a few groceries there. While I give them some of my votes, I withhold alot because of some of their business practices.

Yup. Stopped by Wal-Mart and bought some WWB 9mm on the way home tonight and when 'the question' came up I said: "Pistol".

The kid running the register looked puzzled, and since there was no one else in line I explained why the questions came up on the register. He thought about it briefly and then asked why the law thought it was better for people to have rifles than handguns since rifles were a lot deadlier. I told him that was a very good question and left him thinking.

It's nice to see people think...

if anyone in the Baltimore/DC area finds any Ammo in .45acp or .380 .. please pm me !!! thanks from a very sad shooter that cant find any ammo =(

It's not the firearm that makes it deadly...it's the person with the firearm. It's only a tool, the use is up to the operator(sometimes a loose nut behind the grips).

Whaaaat?

Okay, back on thread, my local Walmart still has the same 4 boxes of .357 Sig, and nothing else....
Seriously, since around December I think.

Dropped by twice this week, first time they had JHP in 0.40S&W but no 9 mm, bought the only box for $19. Second time they had 9 mm JHP but no 0.40S&W, so I bought it for $14. Don't really need JHP but it is still cheaper than FMJ at the range I shoot. The counter guy said he got two boxes of 9 mm FMJ and two 0.40S&W FMJ jacket in that morning but someone had bought them before me. So at least for me ammo at Walmart is still pretty scarce.

This may sound like a dumb question. But why do the clerks at Wally World ask "rifle or pistol" when it comes to ammo:confused:? My local Cabela's doesn't ask any questions. Just maybe ask for ID, if you look young enough buying ammo for pistols.

Thanks

But why do the clerks at Wally World ask "rifle or pistol" when it comes to ammo? My local Cabela's doesn't ask any questions. Just maybe ask for ID, if you look young enough buying ammo for pistols.

Usually cause Federal Law says 21 to buy a pistol, 18 a rifle. Thus if you say, 'pistol', they may ask to see if you are 21.

Why not post the State you're talking about when you mention ammo availability? This gives us a State-by-State idea as to what's going on.

Just got back. My local Wal-Mart has had zero handgun ammo for atleast the past 6-9 months. Went there this morning and they had one box of WWB .38 Special +P value pack, and one .44 Mag. Niether one I need, so I decided to go to the neihboring town's (which is kind of on the edge of the wrong side of the tracks). When I walked up they had 6 value packs of .45 Auto! There was even someone working the counter! She was an older lady who was busy doing something else, then the phone rang and she had to answer a question for a customer who called in. By this time some jerk walked up to the register with abunch of fishing stuff, and got rang up before me! That kind of got me irritated, but I let it go, because in the broad scheme of things it's not really that big of a deal. Anyway when she got to me she was polite, and I was polite to her. Like I said they had 6 boxes, I got 3 and left 3 for the next guy. I haven't seen .45 Auto around here in a very long time. I haven't shot my M&P45 in probably close to a year, so I am super excited now, it made my day, and probably even my week.

Back in my neck of the woods, seems like the Early Bird gets the worm. (They unload the trucks in the middle of the night.)

Supply has been better the last month or so(Northern MI)
No that ammo is there all the time, but if you catch it right, you can snag .22 LR,and 9mm..
I was able to get some .380 awhile ago!!

There's a couple Walmarts by my house. One of them occasionally has more rare ammo (2 boxes of .44 mag from last trip :) but absolutely no .22LR. They had .22 mag, .22CB, and .22LR shotshell. The other one usually has .22LR in bricks, rather than boxes of 50. Both always have 12, 16, and 20GA, so no problems for shotguns. I don't really shoot anything else except .32 Winchester Special (Marlin 336, circa 1950) and 7.62x54R (Mosin Nagant, circa 1942) but nobody ever has .32 Special and 7.62 is better bought in bulk.
