The Walmart Ammo thread

They do have a big sign which says, optimistically, that due to the "shortage" of ammunition, customers will be limited to six boxes per purchase.

I had to crack up at that sign as well. My question to the sporting goods clerk was, "Six boxes of what?" I might have scrounged up a combined total of 6 boxes of .17, .25, & .22 shorts, but what a silly thing this new rule is. The staff says this is to address the problem of hoarding. How can anyone be accused of hoarding when Wal-Mart never has anything on the shelf? Besides, hoarding has nothing to do with purchasing. That is an after-purchase decision on the part of the buyer.

The Wal-Mart in my area had about four cases of Federal 9mm ($8.97) and 40S&W ($12.47) on the floor behind the counter. I picked up two boxes of each. They had a small sign limiting purchases to two or three boxes depending on the caliber.

I asked the guy behind the desk about .380, and he said he hasn't seen any in a very long time. He also thought they'd be out of the 9 and 40 ammo in about a day or two.

Local WM put a 6 box limit here as well. Seems that a certain pawn shop in town has several hundred federal bulk packs with the WM stickers still on them for ONLY $35. evidently he knew when the shipments would come in and somehow managed to purchase every last round for the past several weeks before it even hit the shelf.

I saw the stickers for the first time last week. They are pretty cool. Odd material, impossible to peal off, it just breaks away bit by bit. You might be able to take a razor to it I suppose.

Wal-Mart gets plenty of Ammo in, and has been all alone. You haven't been seeing it because at 9:00PM the second it rolls off the truck there's a Gun shop/Pawnshop owner/entrepreneuring reseller/stockpiler/and or a few knowledgeable people who know when it arrives, waiting there who either buy it all, or clear it out in short order. At 8am the next morning there might be a few boxes left, or the shelves might be bare. I know of two people who would go around in this manner at 8:30-10pm and clear out 5-6 Wal-Marts on a route. These are the people that the new rule is targeting, and it seems to be working. I've actually started to see a few boxes of normal calibers in. The Wal-Mart by my house actually had what appeared to be two cases of .223 the other night.

Went into Walmart about an hour ago. Picked up some 45acp value packs (100 rd @ $29.97). That's basically $15 a box of 50. Also, they had plenty of 9mm, 40sw, 32acp, 25acp, and 22lr in stock. Also picked up 2 bricks of 22LR (500 round bricks @ $15.xx). I think that was the price. My wife picked them up for me. They had about 5-6 of the 45acp value packs available. I only bought 2. (I don't believe in the paranoia and buy just because it's there). I always have "X" amount of ammo on stock, and when I use it, I replenish it. The reason for having "X" amount on stock, is because sometimes I'll go shooting with friends and blow off 1000 rounds of different calibers in a day. But normally, I don't go for the hoarding of ammo. It only perpetuates the scum bags who sell it on gunbroker and such at 3X the normal price. Then again; it's the idiots that are willing to pay for it that really perpetuates the problem.

Wal-Mart report...

Over the weekend, I was in Wal-Marts here in Texas and two different cities in New Mexico. It's as bad as I've seen it. Shelves were practically dry in all three locations. Not even any .22s of any kind. Plenty of shotgun shells if you're after #8 or #7-1/2 shot. Went to a local gunshop and then one over in NM, looking for 45acp and no-go. One place had a lifetime supply of 45GAP, though. I figure the guy must have misordered. ;)

Only ammo I've been able to get over the past month has been from internet orders.

The head fellows down at my local gun store have taken to saying " come on in and lets talk about what I can't get for you". This place typically sells alot of guns. They said every manufacturer, has told them them their orders may not be filled THIS YEAR. Even reloading supplies have dried up. He was asking me for spent brass.

a little better here

The last two weekends I've been able to score a case of WWB 100 rnd packs so I'm stocked up in fine shape. Missed a case of 380 auto by being #2 in line, not #1. Visited another WalMart across town later that morning. They had 3 100 rnd packs of 45 auto and both WWB and Federal 9mm left. Maybe the drought is starting to ease a bit? O'course, I'm there when they wheel out what they have received that week, which for my local stores is 7:00 Sunday mornings.

And that is how the shortage came about.

I was by one here today and they had 4 cases of Federal 9mm. Picked up my limit of .45 yesterday morning from another local WM. This is the best flow I've seen. I won't call it over, but most of the WMs in eastern Cincinnati have stock of something and are getting regular loads on the weekends it seems.

Thankfully the small gun shop where I bought my HK had a box of American Eagle .40SW FMJs...they threw it in for free with the gun purchase (good to be a loyal customer!). I have been calling the Walmarts around here and they got in 1 50-rd box of WWB last week, and when I went in yesterday all they had that was of value to me was a 50-rd box of UMC .223 55 grain FMJ. I talked to the manager and she said they get deliveries every day and if there is ammo on the truck it will get on the shelves between 7pm and 8pm so thats the best time to call. At this point I am just going to be slowly getting my personal stock up one box at a time. I am not going to be the one buying cases as soon as they hit the floor.

derilect; I think the "Head Fellas" at your local gun shop is telling you this to get you convinced that they HAVE to charge you $30-$50 a box for ammo WHEN they get it in. The truth is, the MANUFACTURERS have not told them that they won't be getting their orders filled this year. Why do I say that? Because chances are, they DON'T order from the manufacturer. Even walmart doesn't buy DIRECTLY from Winchester, Remington, etc... They buy through distributors. Now maybe your local gun dealer's distributor is telling your gun store own this stuff, but it isn't Winchester, Federal, Remington, etc... telling them this.

Also; if ANY of this situation was happening because of the manufacturers; which only the production supply is their issue; then EVERYONE would be charging outrageous prices; but they aren't. In the last 3 weeks, I have bought ammo from Walmart, Dick's, and Academy. The average price of 45acp value pack was $29. That's roughly $15 for a box 50. I bought 380; YES 380 for $16 a box of 50. 32auto for $18 a box of 50. 22LR for $16 for a brick of 500. 30-30 for $14 a box of 20. Guess what???? Walmart, Dick's, and Academy aren't purposely take a LOSS in their ammo sales because they like you. The HIGH prices you are buying at are because your gun shops and distributors CAN charge that, and YOU WILL PAY it. Walmart, Dick's, Academy, and many others sell at the prices they do based on a pre-figured markup percentage. So that right there should tell you that the manufacturers AREN'T the ones cranking up the prices.

And we haven't even gotten to the online internet prices yet. With VERY LITTLE LOOKING, you can still get ammunition online from $11-$12 for 9mm up to $23 for 380. YES, you can find 380. So that too tells me that it isn't the manufacturers.

All of you, ALL OF US, need to keep these LOCAL gun shops in our memory. Do a little research. Look online. Find some of the stores that AREN'T RAPING YOU. Then when you find your decent source of ammo; go back to the local gun shop that you believe "REALLY CARES" about you. Tell them what you found. Tell them that you aren't asking for them to change prices. Tell them you just wanted to let them know why they WON'T be seeing you in their store any time soon. Let them know that you'll tell your friends about the "REAL" prices that you can get at other stores and online. Let them know that their little price gouging is going to backfire. Then let them know you'll check back with them in a few months. And the same thing with the gun shows. I went to one of the largest in Denver Colorado this weekend. There was everything there. And even though the prices were outrageous on certain things; people were starting to become more picky with their buying. They weren't buying the CASES of ammo like they were. Those who are still hoarding are doing it; but most people were just looking and buying some of the hard to find ammo. And the consumer is getting smarter. They are deciding to stop plinking with the expensive guns, and just keep them for self defense and home defense. After all; how many people are you planning on shooting. So a couple of boxes is enough. Then they are plinking and practicing with 9mm surplus, 22LR, and other cheap ammo. You can see the look on some of the SELLER'S EYES towards the end of the day when they didn't sell as much as they thought they would. "Hmmm, maybe we bought too much of this stuff (Probably at walmart); and have cranked up the price too much).

Much of the hoarding isn't/wasn't by the actual shooters. It was by the marketeers who are trying to use the political scare tactics to sucker you into believing that you needs to spend $40 on a box of ammunition. Luckily, I have 2 local gun shops that aren't raping their customers. 2 were raping, but in this time of what you'd think was glory for them; both companies went out of business. But the two that are still selling are selling based on their distributor's prices. And when the prices seem too high, we; the customers; have no problem telling them that the prices are too high and that we won't buy it. Some of the ammo is a little high, but we understand the distributors mark up. Even so, most of the popular rounds from 32, 380, 9mm, 40, 10, 38, 357, and 45 all run in the $15-$25 a box range for 50.

Walmart, Dick's, Academy, etc... are your gauge to look at. When walmart starts selling 45acp for $30 a box of 50, then it's probably the manufacturer. But currently, the manufacturers are selling at about the same price that they have since even last summer. Of course there are a couple of retail sporting outlets that are DEFINITELY raping customers. SPORTS AUTHORITY and GANDER MOUNTAIN are 2 that no one should ever buy from. They were doing fine until this ammo scare. Then they thought they could justify and cranked their prices up.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

went to mine and got a box of 45's. Lady said it was the first shipment of 45's to that store since 2 weeks after the election. I mean damn. 8 months...

the gun section in the walmart in the next town over, used to be like a real gun store they had 2 guys in there late 20s workin who new about guns they kept good guns in stock 2 (mossberg 100atr instead of remengton 710/770 savage bolt actions remington shotguns mossberg shotguns RUGER 10/22 AND HENRY .22 none of the crap) you see walmart can pretty much order you any gun you wont if u ask and the people that work in the sporting goods deparment tell the manager what to order. ask a employee to see there gun catalog next time ur in there (if your walmart still deals in guns). now theres this goofy lookin girl workin there and all the crap is back. no good mossbergs as a cheap gun just remington 770s mossberg .22s and mossberg 500s in stock.

Walmart Ammo

Gouging is occurring.

I can usually pick up 100 rds of WWB ammo at Walmart for $20, but they've been out lately.

This past weekend my brother and I stopped in a small gunshop in Goldsboro, NC and the same 100 rds of WWB were priced at $42!!!

I just took off on a loop through 5 Walmarts around me hoping to get some Federal Bulk 22 or maybe some CCI.

The first store had one box of Winchester bulk 22, which my rifle seems to like OK so I grabbed that. They also had several cases of .40 sitting on the shelf from the different companies.

The second store had almost nothing at all.

The third store had several boxes of WWB 9mm and four boxes of Winchester bulk 22. I brought the 22 home with me. They told me the truck this morning brought cases of 9mm, .40, 38 Special and even 380 but it went pretty quick. I didn't even bother to go by the other two stores on my loop so who knows what they may have right now. I didn't have any more room to carry stuff on the motorcycle.

My walmart got 20 boxes of WWB 9mm last night. I bought 3 of them. Left 17 for the others.....

He said it was the most theyve gotten in at once since Jan 15th

Six box limit here in SE TX if and when they get any ammo.

Picked up the last five boxes of Federal 9mm FMJ from WM last night around 8:30.

Noticed staff was moving pallets of other stock out to the floor, so I asked the sporting goods clerk to check for ammo in the back.

He returned with two small boxes of various handgun ammo, none of which was 9mm.

He said they have no idea when ammo will show up or what caliber it will be.

btw: they are starting to sell Federal "Champion" in 9mm FMJ for $8.97/box of 50.

Did the rounds...

Went to a few shops today and I believe it is starting to get better. First stopped at Wallyworld and picked up 500 WWB for $20.97 per 100 (shot 300 sat and 200 sunday had to replenish and left 1000 rounds for someone else). They had 9mm, 40, 45, 357, 45lc, 45GAP, bunch of 357SIG, Federal bulk pack .223 and pretty much all rifle cartridges. No .380 or 38's

Stopped by three funshops and they had everything but 380. They were a little high but the shelves were packed.

Beentown
