The Walmart Ammo thread

The shops that "buy from Walmart" and then double the prices do it because they can and because they have customers willing to pay their asking price. Same with everybody else. If people would just stop paying the steep prices for ammo, the prices would come down and supplies would approach a more normal level. As long as there are people out there willing to pay top dollar for anything, the top dollar will remain high.

The "shortage" has been caused in large part by speculators based on fear. Nothing would please me more than to see some of these speculators get stuck with a bunch of high priced ammo they cannot get rid of. By retail stores placing limits on how many boxes you can purchased, it greatly reduces the amount of speculating going on and allows many more customers to purchase some ammo. I believe this will also help with the perceived fear of ammo availability in the future.

Walmart sells a 100 round box at $20 and a local shop sells it for $42

+1 to Stick_Man.

It is really quite simple. Don't buy it from them. If no one buys their ammo at $42, they will lower the price. If others are buying it at $42, why would they lower the price? They are not in business for you, they are in business for them.

I don't and won't buy from someone who doubles and triples the price and I think anyone that does buy at those prices is crazy.

I was just pointing out that some of these shops are doing this and are helping to create a shortage due to them constantly buying out places like Walmart. So while they have the right to be greedy, just don't tell me there prices are based on buying power.

There will always be shady characters in every business. You are talking about one item in the store. Generally, stores base their prices on their cost, unless there is a shortage, at which point they can sell it at whatever price people are willing to pay.

I have 3 more round to hord... 7.62X39 WANT 2000 9x18 500 ROUNDS ,AND 200 7.63 NAGENT. THAT ISN'T ASKING FOR MUCH...I mean I have 10 rifles that take 7.63X39...only right you know. I have the cash....

Yes, I am talking about shady characters and we are talking about ammo. I know all local shops don't do this but I go to a shop that is gouging an item, then I'm likely not buying anything from them since I see what kind of character they are.

Not necessarily. They want to sell volume. Volume is produced when you sell lower than everyone else.

But Wal-Mart isn't selling so much. Their 'volume' isn't there. They have a shortage just like others but they don't jack the prices up. I suspect the wholesalers and manufactures are not jacking the price up either. That leaves the scalpers.

I agree with your point about Walmart having plenty of opportunity to raise prices and cash in on the hysteria, but not doing so. I think they are doing plenty of volume though. While I obviously don't have actual sales data from them it appears that they are getting fairly regular shipments of ammo in but it is being purchased literally as soon as it comes off the truck. I bet their overall volume across the country right now is substantially higher than it was this time last year.

I dropped by my Wal-Mart in suburban Denver yesterday to pick up food for my daughter's cat and went back to sporting goods to check for ammo in "my" calibers without many expectations- they have had nothing in handgun rounds when I've been there in quite some time. Well, yesterday they did have 4 50 round boxes of .22 in CCI Stinger for $5.25 each. I bought two boxes and left two for the next guy. Oddly, they also had a few boxes of .25 and .32, neither of which I have seen in some time. These calibers don't fit any of my guns or anyone I am watching for (buddies who I will buy for knowing they'll gladly reimburse me for any ammo I purchase for them).

Walmart and pricing - increasing?

So I went to WalMart and the 100 round box of 9mm was $19.87. It is too bad they didn't have the 50 round boxes for $9 - hey, a buck is a buck!

But what I did notice was that the prices for .22 ammo has gone up. It used to be $6.97 for a 100 round box of CCI Mini-mags. Now the sticker says $7.97 and the shelf is bare. I suspect the price will go up again. Dang, I hope this ammo shortage doesn't last much longer and perhaps the prices will come down.

BTW, my local gun store had exactly the same Winchester 9mm white boxes for $32. He said they have cases and cases in the back, bought last year before the run on ammo. I would have bought some since I am all for supporting the little guy, but $10 extra per 100 rounds is a bit steep.

i called 3 local WM's 2 days ago,all were empty of any handgun calibers.
But my local gun shop Vances in central Ohio has prices just a tad higher than WM but have everything in stock.
9mm 50/$13
.40 50/$16.99
.45 50/$21.99
10mm 50/$26.99
Ive pretty much given up on WM for ammo just to save a few bucks,i waste more in gas just to see empty shelves. But i still look when i go there just for fun.

Hmmm. Since most cities have a inventory tax at the end of the year, then he would have to pay that. But then, at $32 bucks a 100, he may have those 'cases and cases' for a long time.

Had a meeting in Pittsburgh today and went to a WM outside of town and got 6 boxes of Blazer Brass 9MM for $8.97/box. Went to my local WM here near Ytown and got 6 boxes of Blazer Brass .40 for $12.47/box. I'll be plinking this Father's Day!!! Clerk did tell me that he received 100 boxes of 9MM this AM, but all were gone by the time I got there around Noon.

A P.S. for you guys looking for .22 ammo. Austintown Walmart has had plenty, all types, every time I have gone in there for the past few months. No shortage of that round here.

I stopped by Walmart this week & they had .40 and .3575 Sig (which kinda surprised me). I'll hit it up this afternoon to check on 9mm.

Once place I've been finding 9mm (WWB @ $14.97 ea.) is Sports Authority. They also have had the Remington UMC in stock for the same price.

I'm seeing some WW FMJ 50 round boxes of 9mm at Wal-mart for $10.50 or so a box.

And some .44 magnums (as if I plink alot with that stuff!)

More ammo at my local WalMart in the last 3 weeks than in the last 3 months.

(yes, WWB, 50 round. 9mm FMJ at $10.97/box)

They even got .38 and .45 coming in for the first time in a long time.

I hope this is a trend that continues.

Went to a local shop.

Small pistol primers, SIX BUCKS FOR 100. That comes out to 60 bucks a thousand!

I just rolled my eyes up and walked out. Hope they have to eat them cause no one buys from them.

Just got my six box limit of WWB, 9MM, 100 count, for $19.98/box.

Still hit or miss, but it is out there more than a few months ago.
