The One Rifle

Well, outside of .22's, when I was a young man I more or less had one go to rifle that did everything for me, from ground hogs to big game, and that was Remington 700 BDL in .270 Win. with a 2 x 7 Leupold. And it would still serve me very well today and probably for the rest of my life.

However, another favorite of mine for the last 20yrs has been a Browning BLR leveraction in .308 Win with a 2 x 7 Leupold.

If I was starting over today, there is very good chance I would hunt up another older Browning all steel BLR in .308 Win. Because I am left handed and I love leveractions, and the old BLR is about a accurate as most of the bolt actions I have owned, and would often outshoot most of them.

Another choice that I would not have any reservation about would be a Pre-64 Model 70 winchester bolt action, or something like a 1959 Browning FN Safari bolt action in 30-06 or .270Win

There's nothing I will ever get to hunt in the way of big game that couldn't be taken with one of those rifles, and combined with a good old Browning A5, and a couple of handguns, I could get by just fine.

I already have it, my Remington 700 Classic in 8x57 mm. No picture at the moment, soon to change..

If another bolt gun, I'd probably want a .308 such as the CZ550 or Ruger M77.

A M14 would be another great choice.

Years ago, I had a plan to return to hunting/shooting after a 5 year hiatus. I figured I would get "my one rifle", and stumbled across a Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow at the local Wal-Mart chambered for the .270WSM. I had dreamed of someday having a wildcat .270 based on a .308 case. Figured it would kick like a .243, but kill deer like a .270 Win. Did a little research on the .270 Short Magnum, decided it might be just the ticket. So it became my one rifle, capable of 300 yard rock chucks with the 90 gr HP bullets, and good deer and elk medicine with the 140 gr Nosler Accubond. So I guess if I could only have one, that would be it. Of course, mine needs a new barrel now after punching paper for 9 years and finally taking real game last fall. It is still hunting accurate, and still capable on game. (of course, after getting "the one rifle, a .243 Win came along, then a 6.5x55 Howa, then a .223 Rem SPS Varmint, then another .223 Rem Weatherby Varmint Special, then another .243 Win Sako A-7, a S&W M&P 15-22, a S&W M&P 15 Sport, and finally, my new Savage 93-17R .17HMR.) I probably still need my "one rilfe", I just hope it will never be alone.

If I could have only one rifle, it wouldn't be a rifle. It would be a 20 ga. Flintlock Fowler.

I also own a 62 cal flintlock fowler, and as far a muzzleloaders go, yes, I could live with that, and hunt just about everything.
