The One Rifle

Not sure what to choose, probably a Savage 24V in 30-30/20 gauge. Or possibly a Savage bolt action .243. But if there is a beginner out there just starting out, I'd suggest to them a Rossi Wizard in .243. I love those stocks and their sights.

mint condition springfield 1903 or a FN Herstal 20" AR15 with RRA 2 stage trigger, M4 buttstock, hogue pistol grip and badger ordnance stablizer free float handguard.

A nice 22 LR in a bolt gun. Maybe a Savage mkII or CZ 452 or 455. Just bought a CZ 455 American and gonna try to break her in tomorrow if I can get in to my camp.

You have to load for her but she will do anything that walks the face of this earth. Chipmunks to the big things that bite and scratch.
Win.Mod 70 Super Express .375 H&H, she has been with me over 25 years.

I understand the appeal of a quality .22 LR.
But, if it could only be ONE rifle, I would probably select a Mauser design bolt action in 30-06 or 308 cal. The '06 can do 110 to 220 grain bullets.

Ill go with my Sportarized 1906 Carl Gustav Swedish Mauser 6.5x55.
Or my keep in the family Sportarized Argentine Mauser rechambered in 6.5x55.

Depends on what you are going to use it for. Although I have .22's, a M1A and a 30-06, the 06 is the most versatile as you have a wide range of ammo configurations to choose. There is light fast varmint ammo up to heavier grain bullets that will take down anything in North America. Ammo is available almost anywhere.

Some hunting regulations prohibit rimfire ammo for hunting. So my vote goes to the 30-06.

Sure glad I don't have to make that choice -

OTOH - there was a time in about 1932 - I was satisfied with my .22 single shot bolt action rifle - did the job for me then -

cz 452

Cz 452: lightweight, very accurate step/sights for 200 meters, ammo is everywhere, light, easy to pack, and any game official will tell the lowly 22lr kills more game every year than any other. That same official would probally tell you more deer and elk are poached each year with the 22 than anything else. :D

I'd have to go with a stainless synthetic Winchester Model 70 in .300 WSM with a Burris Black Diamond 3-12x scope. Go anywhere, do anything outfit.

Thanks for the pics and everything else!
PS: I have a numbered set of those '95's myself. Safe Queens. The prior I had I sold but the sporterized original military, I shoot.

OJ,

Do you still have that single shot .22?
That's a great picture.

BTW: My one rifle would be an M1Garand.

Thank God I don't have to make that choice. I'd be tough letting go of the mausers and the winchesters and the enfields, and the Springfields, and even the black "poodle shooters"

It would have to be a RRA LAR-8 a very common round with enough power to anything in my state. in a AR style platform that can be customized to fit any situation.

Tier 1 AR-15 in 5.56:eek: I dont actually own a tier 1  mines more like a tier 3 thats thinks and acts like a tier 1 ;)

Oldtimer, you've seen a bunch of water go under the bridge. I salute you.

Thanks - more years than I ever expected - but, looking back. I'm grateful I was born and lived in the time I have - couldn't have asked more of life than I've had.

Thanks - mine sure isn't a safe queen - it's my best shooter. I zeroed that Williams FP 71 to hit point of aim at 25 yards and "fine tuned" it to hit 2" above POA at 100 yards - paired shots with "fist rest" on range table and solo shots off hand - I don't consider myself a sharpshooter - just average (for a guy who's been shooting more than 8 decades) but the pairs show the rifle shoots under one MOA in this target - did it all in less than one box of ammo too.

orsogato OJ,

That's a great picture.

Thanks - lost it over moves of moving to city and learning there were other ways to make a living than being a cowboy at age 16, WW II and Korean War services, serving internship and 5 years surgical training at the county hospital for Detroit - I lost it. Those were the good days, though - when a kid walking down the road carrying his rifle drew only smiles and friendly waves - not shutting sown the schools - life has always been good to me.
