The One Rifle

The One Rifle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all. I am much more of a handgun guy than a rifle guy. I have several rifles I have inherited, but nothing that I really connect with. That being said, if you could have just ONE rifle, what would it be?

passintime,

I'm a believer in 1 shotgun, a few handguns but several rifles! All my rifles are built or customized for a specific purpose. And the ones I reload for - My reloads are worked-up to fit that purpose. I plink, practice, compete and hunt with just that one load for each rifle so they are always sigthed-in and ready. This way, I can just pick the rifle that best fits my plans and go with it.

So...My advice is to first figure out what's the most important purpose you have for a rifle and then search/find the rifle that best fits that need. Because I suspect you'll want/need another at some point.

I'll also throw in a couple of cautions:

1) Never sell a real accurate rifle.
2) Never sell one with sentimental value to you or family - Plan to "pass it on".

Savage Model 110 in 308 Win. That would handle anything from varmints (.22 Cal Bullets loaded with Sabots) to Moose (Although 180 Grain @ 2600 fps would be marginal).

If I had just one it would probably be my M1A Super Match. I was trained on a Garand and then an M14 in the military and I like the .308 round. Over the years my M1A has served me well off the bench and in the field. A tad heavy, but a great shooting rifle with really nice iron sights.

I'm with OJ...:D

I cringe thinking about it...but most likely I would grab my M1A Bush (modified to a scout):

If I had to choose just one of my M14s I think I would choose the CQB-16 EBR type SEI.
It's light, compact, suppressible, accurate with iron sights and it accepts all sorts of optics and accessories.

I'm not a "one rifle" guy. I have lots of rifles and every time I take one out and play with it, I think, if I could only have one rifle, this would be the one.

Then the next time, same thing, I'm shooting with a rifle and deside this could be the "one" if I could only have one.

No Sir, it just don't work. I couldn't get buy with just one rifle. I shoot too many different venues.

Wont work. Can't shoot a service rifle match with my Winchester Model 70 featherweights nor can I hunt elk with my White Oak Service rifle.

Neither would work in a CMP GSM Garand Match.

I'm simple. If I were picking something I already had I would just keep my Savage 110 .30-06 because it is my favorite. It's nothing fancy but it's like it was taylor made for me.
If I didn't have a rifle and had to buy one I would consider a nice FAL or M1A. They could be used for about anything you would want a rifle for.

Oh this question really upsets me. But if I had too I would pick the Marlin 1894 in .38/.357, I reload and the .38/.357 is a pretty versatile cartridge and I could use the 1894 in ALOT of situations and be fine. I dont even have one yet but I've been hunting for one for a little while now. Trying to find a real "Marlin" thats not crazy priced.

I just couldn't give up my 1980 Winchester Trapper .30-30 16" bbl.

Of course I couldn't give up the 1979 Winchester Big Bore .375 either. :D

The gun I'm working with now.
Remington 700 milspec 5r, .308, McMillan A-5 stock, Leupold mark IV, and can I have 1000 rounds of handloaded SMK HPBT 175's as well? Doesn't hurt to ask.

sorry, i'm not going to be much help here. i'm looking at my gun cabinet trying decide which gun it would be, and i can only whittle it down to 10. my mind will just explode if i try to get to one from here.
