Hello all. I am much more of a handgun guy than a rifle guy. I have several rifles I have inherited, but nothing that I really connect with. That being said, if you could have just ONE rifle, what would it be?
An AR in .243win. Why you ask? Because its really cool... Or an 8mm mauser. I cant pick one, thats like saying "if you could have one fluid in your car... " See? Impossible
First, I'll give the usual "cheater" response and say it would be an Encore Pro Hunter frame in rifle configuration. One rifle, dozens of cartridges available.
If I had to pick one "real" rifle, it would be something with real wood with nice grain and a stainless steel, fluted barrel. Something custom..... something like this Cooper:
I don't know what I'd chamber it in since no single cartridge would be really ideal for my purposes. Quite possibly 22-250, since I could get away with using it for deer and it's obviously a great woodchuck gun. On the other hand, 7mm-08 is a great deer gun and I could get away with using it on woodchucks and still have enough gun for elk, moose and other big critters, should I ever need it.
So, yeah, something like that Cooper, probably in 7-08.
I would take a fine custom stalking rifle. Take down break action, double triggers, case hardened receiver with tasteful engraving, AAA walnut with a nice checkering pattern in that super fine euro checkering you just can't find anymore, express sights, claw scope bases, maybe an octagon barrel. Chambered in 6.5x55.
I came close to owning such a rifle once:
Why didn't I keep it? A few things. It was underlever, not a take down and it was chambered in 9.3x72r. The angle on the stock was also very harsh. Uncomfortable for me. If it hadn't been for those things it would still be mine.
I'm with you, Bigfatts. Despite all the logic that says the "one rifle" should be something synthetic, stainless, and otherwise utilitarian, I'd still much rather have something that is also beautiful.
Shiloh 1874 Sharps; 1885 Winchester Hi-Wall (either in .45/70); customized Ruger # 1 (.35 Whelen) w/ figured Turkish or Circasian walnut and engraved receiver; or a double rifle in a deer cartridge (another .35 Whelen?).
