Taurus (was: Guns kicked out)

shurshot

This may not be the case here, but here is something to think about. There are many shop owners (guns, beer, sandwiches, hardware, gas, etc.), who get behind in their bills, run up a HUGE tab, and deliverys get stopped, due to hitting their Max credit limit. When a store owner stops selling a certain product (because they can't get another delivery due to unpaid bills), they will often come up with an excuse, blame the quality of the product, company, distributor, State, etc.

I am sure that this is the case with some shops, but I can assure you that the guy I am speaking of does not have this issue. I have known him all of my life and the business is very solvent to say the least. Also, he has several display cases full of high end handguns and the inventory turns over rather quickly and they are never in short supply around there. He also does a good business in rather high qualilty shotguns and inventory situation is much the same as the handguns...they are replaced as soon as they walk out the door.

This is just me, but I would suspect if a shop was having money troubles...the less expensive guns would be the most populous in the shop.

MLeake

shurshot, the thing is, most people don't complain about mid-80's Taurus products.

The PT92 has a good rep, too.

But since the Millennium, Judge, etc kicked off a Taurus rush to expand their product line, QC seems to have taken a big hit.

And the BBB "F" rating is in keeping with most of the reports I have read and heard about dealing with their CS.

I concur with MLeake...the older guns are not the problem.

i'm not sure if anyone's familier with the practices of the bbb but there is plenty of material out there on it.trust me if taurus wanted to better there score with them all it would take is them writing out a check. and take things in perspective, taurus revenue is over 400 million(409 million in 2010). more than s&w and ruger and taurus sells there products at a cheaper price which means they are producing way for firearms then both, so i'm not surprised they have more products that have defects. they also employ over 3,000 people. s&w= 1,500, rgr=2,000. it's simple; the more firearms out equals the more potential problems with said firearms.

Your response to an F BBB rating is to question BBB practices instead of Taurus QC and customer service? That seems a bit brand-myopic. Please describe, with cites or proof, the BBB practices that are not reputable, and who Taurus would write a check to.

Mr. Leake is correct, according to my recollection.
I can second (or third?) Sarge and MLeake on that. Older Taurus specimens were nothing special, but they were solid. We did not see the inconsistencies in manufacturing and quality control that we see now.

brief thread tangent

Hey sureshot--I bought model 66 357 magnum also in 1986, and was wondering if your's is used with the original wood grips--which I find too wide and pounds my hands hard (more than 230 grain 45 acp through my XD) when I fire just a few cylinders of ammo. I can't find the right (narrower) rubber grip anywhere--do you have one on your's--and what kind is it if you do?

taurus4life, you hit a homerun with that BBB pay to play story. And if those stats you posted regarding Taurus' revenue numbers are correct, then it's no wonder the competition is concerned.

these taurus threads always make me laugh. they are full of my FRIEND had a taurus, or my UNCLE, or this GUY i knew, or i read on the INTERNET that taurus guns were crap and full of problems.

i am a real taurus owner i have a model 44, model 605 and a rossi (taurus) 357 revolvers. i also have two model 92's, a pt-145, a pt-1911 and a pt-709 slim. that is 8 taurus handguns that i have never had a single problem with. i have never had a single issue with any of my taurus guns. they work as well and are as accurate as any ruger, s&w, colt, springfield or other make i own.

my taurus 44 mag model 44 is as accurate as my ruger redhawk and easier to shoot even with a shorter 4" barrel. my model 605 in 357 is as nice as my two s&w model 60's but i prefer to shoot 38's instead of 357's. the rossie is a 6 shot heavier gun that i use for 357's. i prefer my taurus model 92's over my s&w mod 59 or s&w 669 in 9mm. i use my taurus pt-145 and 709 slim for concealed carry along with my taurus 605. my other cc guns are springfiled micro and champion in 45, my s&w mod 60's in 38 and my amt backup in 380.

my taurus pt-1911 shoots as well as my colt and springfiled 1911's. i gave my brother my beretta 92 after i got my first taurus 92 and like it so much i bought another taurus 92. my taurus pt-145 has never had a single problem and has 10+1 rounds and is about the size of my springfield micro 1911 (7+1 rounds). my taurus pt-709 slim is my second smallest concealable gun next to my amt 380 backup.

so these are my facts, from a real taurus owner, not second or third hand info or internet bs. i don't know about taurus service because i have never needed to use it. i have as much faith in my taurus cc guns as i do my springfield, s&w or my little amt 380. to all the taurus haters...although the internet is full of people that say taurus guns don't work and yet i have never seen anyone willing to stand in front of one to prove their convictions. i havn't even seen anyone willing to take their favorite gun to the range and go head to head for money with a taurus.

Hangglider,

These are the original (Walnut?), Taurus 66 grips, comparable to the big S&W "K" frame target grips. They fit me fine, but my hand is a little bigger than most. See pic below.

DalGribble,

You and I share similar questions pertaining to internet BS artists...;) LOTS of Internet experts and Mall Ninja's, fewer real shooters. How did we ever get by without real feedback about guns before the internet was invented??? We were limited to listening to the BS at the gun store counter and gun shows...

Here are my 2 1986 Taurus guns (99 & 66), still going strong, no issues. In fact the 9 MM mod 99, my dad used to use it with hollowpoints, to shoot woodchucks (in the head), that were in his garden. :D Both these guns shoot about as accurate as a .22 target rifle.

dalegribble, last year somebody issued one of those challenges - 1000 round head to head test.

When taken up on it, he asked forum members to buy his 1000 rounds... If they would buy it, he would do it. So it never happened.

I don't remember who that was. I had taken him up on it... And never heard from him again.

If those numbers mentioned above by G1R2 are even close to correct (over $400 Million in annual revenue?), Taurus must be doing something right.

LOL, seriously guys? The Chinese have 100's of billions of dollars in annual sales to the USA, does that mean by default that they have great products?
Or just cheap...

It's not hard to make huge profits if you're selling something you have 20 bucks in for $3-400... I'll have to pass on the Taurus.

I have been avoiding this thread, because I don't want to be negative.

"...these taurus threads always make me laugh. they are full of my FRIEND had a taurus, or my UNCLE, or this GUY i knew, or i read on the INTERNET..."
My friend, my nephew, some guy who reads on the Internet can now talk about me...I owned a POS Taurus.
After years of reading negative Taurus threads, I still gave Taurus a chance and bought a PT22.
Out of the box, cleaned and lubed, I went to the range. I brought all high quality LR ammo...various CCI and Aguila. Been shooting a lot of rimfire lately, so I had a good selection.
Many light strikes. Several jams, both on ejection and feed. Worst of all...Keyholing...clear sideways impacts at 10-12feet.
So, I called them up. Can't complain about that part. Taurus quickly agreed to send FedEx to my house and pick it up, along with a clear note about the problems.
Three weeks later, with the holiday in the middle, it came back...no email or anything, just shows up.
Well, they fixed the light strike issue...new hammer spring, and some unspecified trigger bar adjustment.
Totally ignored the keyholing issue...I mean, aiming at the bullseye center at 10ft and the bullets strike sideways way low and right of the bull...

So...what's good about Taurus? They look good, and they are not difficult to sell when you decide you have had enough.
Bought a nice Beretta Bobcat 22lr and got perfect function and excellent accuracy.

Some Taurus owners "get lucky" and others "get trouble."
That's really it in a nutshell. I'm 50/50 on Taurus. I still own one that I love. I also sold one I loathed. When they're good, they seem to be really good. When they're bad they really torque you off. Would I buy another? Probably.

Its not hard making huge profits if your selling something you have 20 bucks in for $3-400...I'll have to pass on the Taurus.

If you pass on a gun because of profit margin made by the manufacturer, surely you also pass on Glock, S&W M&P and most other plastic guns.

Let's get a list going of all the American law enforcement agencies that issue Taurus.... Crickets. Why is that? They certainly make a lot of duty sized weapons and in every safety variation imaginable. They are affordable and according to Taurus fans, they have excellent CS. So, why is it not one US law enforcement issuing them? Maybe the US government is part of the vast Internet conspiracy against Taurus?

while itstrue no u s agencies use taurus. the brazilian government and local police used taurus. along with many other south american agencies. while I know these aren't the same as the united states I'm sure they're not gonna put their people in harms way to save a buck and use inferior product

While I'm sure they don't intend to put anyone in harms way, they certainly don't have the same standards or money that we and western nations are fortunate enough to have. Personally, I think Taurus is innovative and makes some very nice looking guns. If it were not for all the horrible reviews that accompany a vast majority of the guns they put out I'd probably look very closely at a few different models. I also find it alarming that Taurus has never once issued a recall despite repeated issues with many guns in their line.

I should also add I HAVE OWNED 4 Taurus revolvers in the past.
