Sons of Guns- BS?

I'd say SBS, and a zip gun at that. These guys boarder on the illegal it seems.

They spent a lot of time on a stupid zip gun

I am not sure that they are even decent machinists. no decent machinist would think of operating shop equipment without proper eye protection.

This is your statement back in post #48 that I responded to. If this isn't your comment and you failed to place it in quote of another member, then my apologies.

this isn't 25 years ago either, OSHA would cite them for that now.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. At the time I was providing that comment to support my opinion that the level of safety practices aren't directly connected to the competency of a machinist.

But I digress...

Shane, that was my statement and I am not sure what your point is about it. I believe that you and I are in agrement about the program. I also agreed that safety and quality of workmanship are two different issues.

No since they are a Class 2 SOT. Also it can't be both an AOW and SBS. I think I will go with AOW since this category inclueds Smooth Bore Pistols (an SBS without a stock) and ZIP guns.

How many of you that look at guns in a shop shoulder a rifle and keep it strait up or strait down? After making sure its unloaded a good 3x, you find a corner of the store with no one in it and shoulder it, pointing higher than head level, but still not too different from what they do on the show.

My biggest critique of the show is how everything seems to be the first time its been done and usually its not.. which has been mentioned before.

Back before I changed careers, I was a computer geek. In that industry water cooling is used for cooling processors that are extremely overclocked (ie, running much faster than it comes out of the factory) because it cools so well. Maybe I'm a little biased because of my history, but I thought that was a very ingenious answer to a customer that wanted something that doesn't make sense... ie, an M16 capable of sustained fire... good business is keeping customers happy which he did.

Just like Antony Bourdain visiting Ted Nugent, nothing better than a liberal New Yorker shooting an M60 from the hip and admitting to a "strangely satisfied feeling".

Amen :D

I also liked Gunny R. Lee Ermey's response after firing an M-60, he rolled over from the prone after firing,
and said, "If I smoked, I'd want a cigarrette right now..."

Which is pretty much what my response was after I first fired an M-60 in the Army...
I felt like I had gone several rounds with a redheaded female Marine...in the FUN WAY!! :D

There is TRULY nothing like a belt-fed machine gun!!

The thing that annoyed me about the dual-16s is the WAY they did the water-cooling system. They used refrigerator copper tubing wrapped around the barrel and gas tube...without some solder, the heat transfer is going to be pretty poor. It would be easy enough to engineer an actual water jacket for the entire fore-end, or jacket just the barrel and go with a piston system to replace the gas tube...
And notice that they didn't say it actually WORKED...the test was 3 100rd mag dumps that generated 725* in the stock system, and the water-cooled system was at 82*...but that was only after a single 30rd mag in semi!

I with the guys that don't like the show. We can choose not to watch. If they do a show on restoring something (i.e the flame throgher episode) I find it interesting. When they cut up cool stuff like the 1919 Browning well that just sucks.

and the water-cooled system was at 82*...but that was only after a single 30rd mag in semi!

If you heard them talking to the customer, they said it reduced temps by 42% (or some number very close to that). 82 is not 42% of 725, so I would have to assume they did a test that was very similar to the original. They didn't specify though, you're right.

It's goofy.

I watch because the choices on TV are really limited and I'm too tired to do anything worthwhile, like read a book.

Of the stupid things that I've seen on the show that haven't been mentioned:

The girl told a customer that the M1 carbine he was trying to sell wasn't developed until the 60's. (I really hope that she was looking at a Universal and the editing just didn't catch her full explanation.) He wanted to talk to Will and she sent him down the road to the competition instead.

Estes model rockets as the basis for WWII re-enactor bazooka rockets?... Okay, maybe I can see that.

Estes model rockets as the basis for MLRS rockets? As a deterrent against PIRATE ATTACKS? How is that system going to hold up to the rigors of a salt water environment?

They seem like a small appointment-only custom shop with a decent clientele. They do a really good job of saying "yes" to customers who have crazy ideas and have likely already been laughed out of everywhere else.

They also like to set pyrotechnics on their targets and not really tell the viewer. I know the M-2 is a beast but I don't know about it blowing basket-ball sized holes in plywood targets. And the one with the bazooka rocket detonating on the car was definitely "enhanced".

Not the right publicity

The show has a fair amount of entertainment value but more of a let down in my opinion. My concerns with the program are thier lack of safety in the workplace and shooting areas. I have issue with shooting blanks to scare co-workers and firing fully auto out the window while bouncing around in a moving vehicle.

The funniest part about the show is how it draws out all of the drama queens in this forum who are for some reason compelled to have to spend time ragging about the show. Reminds me of my 20 something year old daughter....drama, drama, drama. TOO FUNNY! :D

What smacks of more pettiness and drama, us talking about a show or you trying to insult us for talking about a show?

I knew I'd seen that folding gun thing done before (and better).

She manages the front end and all incoming clients. Just because you walk into a business and ask to see the boss does not mean you get to. She was also was correct, post war M1 carbines can vary greatly in value. As for sending him packing, Red jacket is not a pawn shop, they are a custom shop and are not in the business of buying firearms (most of the time).

I had my doubts as well, especially considering how quickly pirate attacks can occur. I am also not sure if you can keep rocket systems like that loaded for any kind of duration and it is not something you could quickly load while RPGs and AKs are being shot at you.

They are one of the better custom shops out there and probably the best AK shop around. The quality of their work does not really shine in this show, but trust me, they are "top tier". Custom shops like this get all kinds of goofy projects to work on, and Red Jacket often get referred to by others who do not have the skill at hand. However the show does seem to gravitate towards the oddball designs they make instead of the quality average looking stuff that would normally appeal to us here.

My beef is mainly with the madeup timelines and the "fake" customers. Now I used quotes because I do not think they are entirely madeup, I think red jacket either contacts people they have done work for in the past or gets actors to play customers they have done work for, so the can recreate some of the oddball projects for the camera. Which would be why everyone always comes in needing something creative within a few days (where normally it would be several months wait).

They have explained in the past many times that they hot loaded a few targets for a wow factor. So if you have been watching and have half a brain you can probably pick up on the fact that if they did it in the past that they are doing it throughout every show.

I haven't seen much of it, but I haven't been impressed.

I was rather disappointed with the MG42 build.

"Here's the parts kit".
"Ok, finished!"

And that folding MAC survival/flashlight pistol seems so ...lazy. It's also baffling to me that they decided to use a MAC, of all things.
