Sons of Guns- BS?

In general I don't like reality tv shows too much drama and watching adults act like children gets boring. Now American Idol that is a real show.;)

I'm intrigued that their shop is in Baton Rouge, my home town. I was impressed that they got a Saiga 12 suppressed to 139db in an earlier show. Someone said good machinists and I would agree. The show where they mounted a Saiga under an M4 to be used as a breacher was interesting.

Ill have to look again, but I do believe that they used a left side ejecting AR upper for the left side M16. I like the show. Its ENTERTAINMENT, and there aint not one of us who wouldn't jump at a chance to be on a show like that!

Sons of Guns is:

Pro-2nd

Amusing

Interesting

Shows some interesting ways to solve problems (ok re-solve problems)

Hasn't killed or seriously maimed anyone on TV

Is a lot more entertaining than at least 50% of what's on

It's obvious that the show has a hatedom here. They at least seem to be a fairly real gun store that just gets contracted with the occasional unusual order.

my thoughts on the show

"Its a crap series. They're decent machinists and fabricators but they know jack about firearms." quote from 10mmauto

I am not sure that they are even decent machinists. no decent machinist would think of operating shop equipment without proper eye protection.

as far as the show goes, I like the fact that there are a few more pro gun shows on tv, even if it is a bit far fetched.

yeah, the daughter is cute but I have a wife that nags as well as she does.

Wow I thought I was the only one who thought this show was lame. As soon as I saw it I thought "american choppers", but they're building "guns". They don't seem like very safe people in their shop, either.
Oh- and the daughter- what an ANNOYING voice.
I think that these new firearms shows are just reality tv's chance to cash in on peoples newfound affection for firearms. Fwiw- I really can't stand Top Shot either. All that drama, and again, the voice of the announcer-guy just annoys the crap out of me.
I do love guns but feel the gun community is grossly mis-represented by tv. Just my 2cents

Is it a show with questionable originality? Yep.
Do they sensationalize subject matters? I'd say quite often.
So, here's my take:

It's a gun show. Quite difficult to have on prime time TV moreless being able to keep one. I don't think it's fair for me to pass judgement or able to give a solid opinion on how Red Jacket operates or the quality of Will's workforce based on watching the show. Producers of shows such as this really know how to twist the true image of people and their operation. The only time I can recall one not wearing eye protection is when Will was grinding. Even then, I don't judge the quality of a product because their lack of safety practices. As little as 25 years ago, it sure as heck wasn't a top priority in the workforce and there were certainly outstanding gunsmiths then. I see more gun range violations with people bringing first time shooters. I'm more concerned with that than a TV show.

I think Red Jacket has a solid niche in the gun market and if they chose to gamble on their perceived image by doing a national televised show more power to them. I take the information given with a grain of salt and just enjoy the show. Are there annoying issues? I surely think so. But TV is TV.

I wouldn't want someone to poke at my daughter so I'm withholding my opinion of her hygiene, appearance, etc. I do think she knows more than the average gun enthusiast...well, at least what the producers portray.

(Don't know why I hit the reply button instead of preview...:o)

Additionally, my take on Will is he seems to be much smarter and inventive than the show implies. I don't think his business would survive if he didn't have the smarts to run an actual business and know a thing or two behind the trigger.

I agree that Will does seem to have the knowledge...
It's the cheesy ideas, and the made for TV situs that I don't care for.

But, I guess a "real" gun show/episode- like chambering and trueing a precision rifle action, wouldn't appeal to viewers that really don't know anything about guns- which I suspect is a large percentage of the viewers.

I wasn't equating their product quality to their safety practices, they are two entirely different issues. I can't think of the machinists name, he is the one with the beard and tats, but I have seen him several times at the milling machine without eyeware. Just a comment in response to another posters comment about thinking they are good machinists. this isn't 25 years ago either, OSHA would cite them for that now.

I give them kudos for originality and workmanship with the exception of the survival hide-a-way pistol that flips out. it appeared to me to be a lame attempt at .....something.

will I continue to watch the show? yup, sure will.

Well if you think about it the show has a target audience of people who probably don't know too much about guns. So our perception of the show is probably a bit different than the other 90% of the viewers.

I think you guys are overlooking "Top Shot" on the history channel. It can be entertaining, but I had to stop watching because I couldn't stand the announcer describing every shot that was taken.

Actually, I think that "survival" thing is actually a SBR...
I remember hearing one of them comment about a 2-3 month wait.
I think that "box" must qualify as a stock- and it was, the way they shouldered it when they shot it.

All the more reason not to buy it. Who's gonna buy a stamp for that?

What always killed me is when they weld. They always use a MIG. Poor choice IMHO for any gun work. Way back in the day I used to do some gun work in the fab shop I worked at, a gunsmith would bring it in. All TIG welds.
