So, are you confident with the 9x19 for CCW?

45 is a great round but it isn't a magic bullet. If somebody shoots an elephant with a 45, my guess is that person will wind up getting trampled to death by the elephant.

The 9mm is not really any better or worse than any other pistol cartridge out there, and is easy to shoot well and a bit cheaper to shoot often. I have never felt undergunned with one. then again, I have never shot a firearm in self defense..

The entire concept of CCW is to eliminate any threat against one's life. While the 9mm will certainly seriously wound or kill an individual or animal that is threatening your life, it may take multiple hits to take them down, especially if they are drugged out. Whereas, with the .45, that person or animal is going down (unless you are talking about an enraged elephant on opiates, in which case it may take multiple hits.)

so you can hit that drugged out bad guy in the pinkie and take him out? you my friend are king ;)

shot placement is still key.

While I normally carry .45 ACP....

The 9X19 is the caliber I choose for night biking, simply because I can control it well and fire accurately with one hand, while still controlling the bike. At these times I carry a Glock 26 with HydraShoks. And I don't feel undergunned at all.

9mm

for bigger bore

bigger hole + penetration =
more tissue damage =
greater probabilty of neutralized target.

for the 9mm
cheaper ammo =
more practice =
faster draw and better accuracy.
lighter recoil =
better accuracy and quicker follow up shots
lighter gun =
better concealability

i carry a kahr pm9 in no jacket weather
a glock 19 in jacket weather
loaded with federal 115 +p+ or doubletap 115 +p.
never outgunned.
9mm allows me to shoot 3000 rounds a month at the range and in the shoot house.
practice and situational awareness are the key components of self defense.
caliber...not a big thing.

I have and had several 9mm carry guns. I feel comfortable carrying a gun I can shoot and make the shots count.

So if its a 9mm , then good. If its a .45 , good there too. I believe in more of shot placement then caliber size. There is no sense in carrying something you can shoot properly.

For my needs, a 9mm is a fine cartridge (though I don't carry one often becasue I prefer revolvers). While larger calibers such as .40 and .45 have certain advantages such as effectiveness with subsonic ammo and penetration of auto glass, most if not all of them aren't particularly applicable outside of the military and LE. What I find striking these days is how remarkably similar the performance of all the major semi-auto service calibers (9mm, .357 Sig, .40S&W, and .45 ACP) is when modern JHP's are used. Only when we get into cartridges like full power 10mm Auto and those commonly found in revolvers such as .357, .41, and .44 Magnums do the bullets really do anything all that different.

I have bigger calibers, but rotate my IWI Desert Eagle Compact 9mm, S&W model 60 .38, and Ruger SP101 in .357. I feel good about all three, but have 14+1 in the IWI. With 147 gr hydroshocks, I feel pretty comfortable. Any gun is better than none at all, if needed.

While the 9mm will certainly seriously wound or kill an individual or animal that is threatening your life, it may take multiple hits to take them down, especially if they are drugged out. Whereas, with the .45, that person or animal is going down
Any hard evidence for this?

"Whereas, with the .45, that person or animal is going down."

Well, the first word that comes to mind is BULL.

The second word that comes to mind isn't for use on a family-friendly site...

There's a HUGE amount of myth that has grown around the supposed wonderous powers of the .45 ACP over the past century.

Some of it derives from the round's obviously excellent properties. Even more comes from the fact that it was our front-line handgun and submachine gun round for most of the 20th century.

But a LOT more of it derives from chest beating monkey hooting claptrap assumptions, specuations, and imaginations that if it's American, it MUST be the best ever developed and its powers are Godlike and terrible to behold.

There are recorded instances of individuals taking a .45 slug to the HEAD at close range and not only living to tell about it, but walking away from the encounter.

As well, there are many recorded instances of someone being hit in the torso with a .45 slug and not going down.

The .45 ACP is not some magical staff of the Gods that smites those who need to be smoten.

And the simple fact is... a handgun, ANY handgun, is a pretty crappy device for stopping a determined attacker.

My daily carry is either a Kahr K9 in 9mm with (2) extra mags or a Springfield Armory Ultra-Compact in .45 again with (2) extra mags.

Both guns are reliable and I am proficient with either one. I do not "feel" undergunned with the 9mm nor am I more confident with the .45. Regardless of the platform or the caliber employed, nothing is carried unless I can put rounds when and where I want them... period.

There is no "cool" factor in my decision making process.

I'd rather carry a .45. I'd rather carry a .50 BMG. But I do carry a 9mm, every day, all the time.
For the "business casual" style that I am required to wear, and on the Texas Gulf Coast, where over garments are miserable and obvious, I prefer a gun that I can and will actually carry. I have several .45 ACPs and they generally stay home, at the range, or in between.
