So, are you confident with the 9x19 for CCW?

my P-11 with +P cor-bons will suffice if my dress that day cant abide a p239 or 1911. though i mostly will carry the 45acp when i am including a range session that day.

comfortable---more like adequate.

I own a 9mm, and if I was to get into a series of gunfights and all my .40s, .45s and .357 Magnums ended up in the police evidence locker, then I'd carry it. I've carried a 9mm before, and it's about what I would consider to be the minimum cartridge suitable for defensive use. Given a choice, however, I prefer not to carry the minimum.

After all, handgun rounds are poor stoppers, so I might as well carry the biggest I can shoot well and still conceal.

I've been carrying my G26 all summer long with a spare mag and do not feel undergunned in any way. I just bought Federal HST 124gr rounds for my two 9mm carry guns.

You guys are funny! Of course the 9X19 is adequate. You just got the "bigger, badder" syndrome.
I keep a 9mm (or two) handy in the car, but carry a .32 acp all the time.

As has been said many times over with the best JHP's all the service calibers perform about the same. The better ammo has been designed to meet the tough requirements of the F.B.I.. I like 9mm for the reason most people state. Cheaper practice ammo, low recoil, more rounds on board and so on. When you really begin to study the subject of terminal ballistic you realize all handguns are pretty poor stoppers. All you can do is get a gun that you can shoot well, get training, and practice alot. Putting the bullet in the right places is what stops a bad guy. Actually putting lots of bullets in the right place may very likely be necessary with a determined opponent. Soft wear (good use of tactics, movement, effective use of your firearm) is what wins gunfights. Not hardware.

Yes the .45 and the .40 are more powerful rounds but the 9x19 is also nothing to mess around with. It has decent stopping power, a crap load of firepower in alot of guns, as well the price issue on its side... I use 9x19 often as a back up gun. Also the 9x19 was also the caliber of my first centerfire pistol.

I'm more than confidant with the Luger round with GDHP 124g +P and a few Fiocchi FMJ 115g +P+'s at the end.

I would carry a 45acp if I could afford to, but I don't feel a need one!

If I want more power I'll carry my .357mag or get a 44mag.

PS: I carry a .38 +p snub.

I carry a 9mm on and off duty and for a BUG, they're all loaded with Federal 9BPLE +P+. I don't have any worries about this or that caliber. I'm confident in my ammo choice, the reliability of my weapons, and my shooting skills.

they're all just tools not a magic talisman.I'll say it again if your still asking which caliber is best to survive an armed encounter you need more practice and training.Because that's what will keep you alive.
and yes I do feel very comfortable with my 9mm carry a H&K P7PSP very fast and extreamly accurate first shot.

I carry a 9mm in warm weather and a 40cal in cold weather. My 9mm is smaller and easier to conceal under a T-shirt, the forty is my winter gun as I like the heavier bullet for penetrating heavy clothing. The fact is there is likely little difference in bullet performance of both on heavy clothing due to the latest technology. I think its probably more a quirky bigger is better feeling.

When fully loaded the 45 is HEAVY and after all day carry when compared to the 9mm or even the forty it makes a difference. As most will agree shot placement is the more crucial between the big three defense calibers 9mm,40, and 45.

9mm Is Just Alright By Me.

I carry the round/pistol that I am confident I can shoot fast and accurate. And that round is 9x19 and the pistol is a Glock19.
If the problem isn't solved in 15 9x19s I lost.

For years I carried a 9mm with jhp's, disarmed a carjacker by merely pointing it , [note to now incarcerated carjacker, it is not a good idea to show your pistol neatly tucked in your waistband] your intended victim may be gripping his pistol in his pants pocket and will have the drop on you before you know it.

Now let's balance the uninformed opinion with statistical facts.

The link below shows the FBI statistics on officers killed by caliber from 1995 to 2004. The statistic cannot be used to scientifically compare one caliber to another, as the numbers are skewed toward the popularity of firearms carried today. What one can easily deduce from the data is that the 9mm round is extremely effective as a self-defense round, which is the answer to the OP's question.

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/killed/2004/table34.htm

FYI - The caliber that has killed more officers from 1900 to today is the .38 Special.

We could say that's because it was the caliber in most use during that period, but still it's interesting to note that the 9mm has much more muzzle energy than the .38 Special. Also, true in +P form. The 9mm is has a lot more muzzle energy than a .38 Special +P. Both are about .357 and have similar weights. So, I guess I feel OK carrying my XD9 with 15 Gold Dot +P's loaded.:)

BTW, I do own & carry three .45ACP pistols.....well, not at the same time.:D

I did make the point earlier about the popularity of a given caliber skewing the results, and it holds true with the .38 Special statistic. My only point for adding the stat is that; if the .38 Special has been a historic man-stopper... How can you go wrong with a billistically superior cartridge like the 9x19mm Parabellum? The reason for the additional stat is to bolster the argument for the 9mm, which once again is exactly what the OP is requesting.
