Help with year and value please

Recently acquired two Smiths. One is a five shot with 14307 on the inside when the cylinder is open and 10843 near the grip. It has about 60% of the original finish left. The other is a six shot with 27118 on the inside and 400992 on the butt. Probably about 70%. Thanks.

Need the serial number off the bottom of the frames grip butt on both of them (see pic in post number 1940). Also, need to know their calibers.

Two Smiths

The five shot is a Regulation Police .38 S&W Ctg. After removing the grips to expose the grip butt, there is no number there, but 10843 is on the front strap. The six shot is a 38 S&W Special Ctg and the 400992 is from the grip butt.

You're right. After checking the book the Regulation Police serial numbers are on the forestrap. It list the serial numbers as running from 1 in 1917 to 54474 in 1940 so I'm guessing your sn of 10843 would be in the 1920's.
Same with your 38 Military and Police 4th Change, book list serial numbers as 241704 in 1915 to 1000000 in 1942. SN 500000 was ~1927 so, 400992 would again likely be early 1920's.

Model 17-4 s/n 29K25xx
Model 19-4 s/n 56K67xx
Model 37 s/n J8508xx
Model 60 s/n ABU09xx
Model 41 s/n A7586xx
Model 41 s/n A5790xx
Model 41 s/n TAD68xx
Model 52-2 s/n A5790xx

Thank you in advance

Model 17-4 s/n 29K25xx 1978/79, likely the former
Model 19-4 s/n 56K67xx 1978/79, likely the latter
Model 37 s/n J8508xx 1981
Model 60 s/n ABU09xx 1983
Model 41 s/n A7586xx 1982
Model 41 s/n A5790xx 1979-80
Model 41 s/n TAD68xx most likely 1985
Model 52-2 s/n A5790xx 1979-80

I don't think I'd classify any of them as truly "collectible" (unless perhaps if unfired with box, papers, and accessories), but it's a damn nice collection.

can i use 38 bullet in a magnum357 gun is it safe for the gun

If you're asking if you can fire .38 Special cartridges safely in guns chambered for .357 Magnum, the answer is yes.

how many round can i shoot using magnum44 model 29-2

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here - the Model 29 holds 6 cartridges in the cylinder, if that helps.

Hello, FlyFish!

Greeting and warm regards!

I am considering purchasing a surplus S&W Model 10 revolver, with serial number AYR59XX.

From what I saw, the gun was originally purchased and used by the Royal Hong Kong Police.

It has a pencil-type barrel, serrated half-moon front sight, and lanyard loop.

Any information you can provide (date of manufacture, etc.) will be highly appreciated.

Cheers! And thank you!

rauke: The AYR s/n prefix would indicate a manufacturing date of late 1987/early 1988. My understanding is that the RHKP police variation was made much earlier than that, as SCSW refers to many of them being found in ANIB condition in 1983, but there are many Model 10 variations out there and this is not an area that I have any particular knowledge in. The illustration of the RHKP variation in SCSW has "RHKP," along with a 5-digit number that appears not to be an S&W s/n, stamped in gold on the backstrap, if that's any help.

Serial Number Inscription Conflict

I'm hoping to determine the approximate age and value of this S&W HE .32 w/ 4" round barrel, chromed, antler (?) grips, in very good condition, SN: 38xxx. Thanks again, my books aren't giving me the date of manufacture.

38XXX would make it a 1st Change. Serial numbers ran from 19426 in 1904 to 51126 in 1906. The book list $385 in excellent and $700 "ANIB" but those are 3 year old values.

My wife, who is a nurse, asked me to obtain a value for this S&W HE .32 pistol which belongs to an older widowed woman she does home health care for. The widow woman wants to sale this pistol that she has had for over fifty years and I'm trying to help her out. I posted this pistol on a local web site to sell it for her and received a response to the ad that the serial number 38xxx is a second change, bla, bla, bla, and its value is $200 etc. Meanwhile, out of curiosity my father-in-law removed the antler grips and an inscription read (SW 1902 $5) Can someone help me clarify this, I just want to get a fair value for the woman. Many thanks!

His response would have been correct if it was a .38 S&W caliber. But, in 32 S&W Long caliber and a serial number of 38XXX it is a .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 - 1st Change, made from 1904 to 1906.
This information is taken from the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.
The inscription is something somebody added later.
Your finish is nickel and appears to be original although the grips aren't. The only value I can offer is what is in the book:
Good = $275
VG = $315
Excellent = $385 and $700 for "as new in box" which yours is not.

The problem with really old guns is their appeal is pretty much limited to collecters so it's a smaller market.
