Hey guys, I found an old break-open revolver in my grandfather's desk after he passed away.

Serial umber on butt is unreadable, but I believe the number on the cylinder reads 405xxx, possibly 406xxx.

It is DA and if I had to guess I would say it's a .38 (I had some 9mm laying around and it loaded into the cylinder). Looks like a 6 1/2 inch barrel.

What is this thing and how old is it?

Thanks,
george

True Grit, it looks like a .38 double action 4th model.

The Serial number range is 322701-539000.

They were made from 1895-1909.

Since yours in in the middle of the serial number range, it was probably made around 1900-1905.

Price is probably around 100-150. There were quite a few made, and yours isn't in the best of condition.

S&W 357 Revolver

Friend is selling a S&W revolver. Not sure of the model but I am curious about the age of the gun. Serial is 9D326XX. Has a beautiful set of rosewood grips and is in almost perfect condition. Anyone willing to give me the age of this gun and what it sold for new?

Michael

Jim L. just cleared up the date (1955) for my K-38 Combat Masterpiece, in another thread. This is one of only two revolvers I own. The other one is also a used S&W model - an M 60-7 (nickelplated) with a BSC 61** serial number. Since I want to determine if I can safely shoot +P's out of it, can anyone here find what the date is?

1994.
S&W began a heat treating package on model 60's starting in 1990 with the 60-7 which made them +P rated.
Your K-38 is nickel but your 60-7 is stainless steel.

Model 66 info

I purchased a used S&W Model 66 in 2001, serial # 9K22565. Just had it overhauled by Sandy Garrett of Northern VA Gun Works (his work is superb!) and boy does it work smoothly now. He said the gun had been fired a lot over the years!

Can anyone give me a year of birth or any other info based on the serial # - it does have a "pinned" barrel.

Thanks - J.P.

crasht51 - That SN would date your Model 66 to 1976, and it should be a "no dash." The pinned barrel and cylinder counterbore (which yours should also have) were dropped with the -2 in 1982. They were last manufactured in 2004.
