S&W "Something big coming April 12th 2012"

I can't even see why people are excited about this.

It looks like it's about the size of the Berertta Nano / Glock 26 / Walther PPS - around there.

Unless it's the size of the Kahr PM9 or the Rohrbaugh R9, Sig-Sauer P290... thereabouts, I don't see what this thing really has to offer.

Well anyway, I'm starting the c0untd0wn...

Not every gun that's made these days needs to be compared to the R9 or Kahr PM/CM's. Believe it or not, some people don't mind a small'ish gun on their belt. The M&P has sold like crazy and is beginning to show up in police departments across the country. I bet people who are issued M&P's are really going to appreciate a scaled down version that takes the same mags for a back up to their full sized. The same goes for droves of civilians currently toting the M&P subcompacts and compacts.

Also, have you seen a P290 up close and in person? It's not very small or thin. Certainly not any sort of benchmark for what makes a small pistol.

I agree, especially the part about the P290, and I think Sigs are great. I wanted to get one, then I held one in my hands and quickly decided to go with the much thinner Nano (which can hardly be compared with a double-stack Glock26 or the larger-framed PPS).

They're a little late to the market but they'll still sell a million eventually due to brand recognition. Many who've been holding back on buying single-stack CC 9's/.40's will now pull the trigger. I'm not crazy about safeties so I'll keep my Kahr CW9... but THIS GUN HAD TO HAPPEN.

Not for me, I don't like striker fired guns

why?

No real reason, I just like hammers and safeties on my semi autos.

Guess its too many years using Colt's and 1911a1's.

Never had a problem with safeties on 1911s or my Berretta 92.

Well you can half like it then, it has a safety. ;)

Kidding, I feel the same for the most part.

Though a few new striker guns are slipping onto my want/need list.

The real innovative thing S&W did with the Shield was to actually make enough of them to ship prior to announcing the gun... unlike Springfield Armory, who jumped the gun at SHOT show with the XDs... when they only had two of the damn guns in the whole company. I hear S&W has 7-8k of them ready to ship now.

MSRP is $450? Any idea what the "street" price is going to be? I'd love to snag one of these for around $350-375...

is the shield strictly compacts? i just bought a m&p full size and im thinking i should have waited if it does come in full size.
