S&W Issues Recall for Walther PPK/PPKs Models

S&W Recall

I can't believe it, she's back!!! I've been tracking this thread and getting more depressed every day. My gun was recieved by S&W on 4/23. Given everything I've heard and read I didn't expect to get it back until at least late July. Well it was delivered via UPS this afternoon. They fixed the decocker and polished the ramp, nice job. It looks like this process may be moving quicker than expected. Good Luck.

You must have made a typo.... Please don't tell me you sent it to them the END OF APRIL and already have it back.... Many of ours have been gone for several months.

Yes, please tell us that was a typo. Glad for you that you got it back:D but I am losing my patience with S&W and probably some other folks are also with the way they have jerked us around telling us different things. My last email to them was polite because I understand about the large volume of pistols they have to deal with but if this drags out past this week I am really going to be hot and give them an earful. I hope a bunch of them show up this week for the rest of us here.

S&W Recall

I can't believe it either. According to the UPS Delivery Notification, A "Soucey" signed for my gun on 4/23/09 at the dock. This is why I didn't expect a return until at least early July. Something tels me the repair rate must be moving along quickly now. Either that ot thier just working on the good looking guys first :D

S/W told me mine "should be shipping out today." If it gets in UPS hands on a Wed, I should have it Friday night. Otherwise, it should be here on Monday.
I was happy to hear the news, and didn't press as to how some returned in April are already back. I expect these things were on pallets, moving around during the wait for the green light. Last-in, first-out, like luggage, and evidently they didn't keep a real close record of arrival dates. Hopefully, we "regulars" here can bow out of this thread soon, and leave it for others!

Delayed a few more weeks now

I just got told that they are waiting on a spring to come in and that it will be a few more weeks.

Unless this is unrelated to the recall repair, I just don't get this anymore...

Over the past few years I've read on various discussion forums people complaining about this and that with the S&W ppk. Many have sent theirs back for work. I've been fortunate with mine. I have fired it exactly 881 times (I have a spreadsheet where I document every firing session) and have had six failures of one kind or another, usually (4) were failure to fully chamber where I needed to nudge the slide forward, one was a stove-pipe. Many have sent them in for feeding problems, ejection problems, some (including myself once) even had their ppk freeze in a half-cock position.

It is my hope that they are using this recall as an excuse to fix all known problems with the guns. The polishing of the feed ramps suggests this. Maybe they are aware of what to look for as far as springs go and do a complete overhaul as needed. This could in the end save them the hassle of dealing with common service returns.

If this is the case I might be able to convince myself that the long wait was justified.

Returned PPK 3/26/09
received at Houlton 3/30/09 ( so much for 2nd day delivery)
Logged in at repair facility 04/07/09 ( 9 days later - total time from shipping to log in 11 days ! )
Received this reply on 5/7/09:
Repairs are beginning this Friday, and the pistols already in house will be as soon as they begin and may take about 3 - 4 weeks to completely clear the 12,000 out. Once we have caught up the turn around will be greatly improved to be a week turn around time.
Based on me stating repairs are beginning yes, parts are now available and have passed all safety testing.
Have a great day!
Michelle

Called again yesterday and was told to expect another 3-4 weeks. Granted it,s been just over 10 weeks but back on 5/7 they were confident the turn around would be shorter than expected. I asked about the 9 days to log my pistol in and was told "They have to make sure they are not loaded".
Got this e mail today:
We apologize that it is taking so long to repair the PPK recall
pistols. We will try and get your pistol expedited, but cannot promise
when it will ship. Unfortunately due to the number of guns involved
in this recall, it is difficult to expedite every customer who requests
it back right away.

Certainly never buying anything made by Smith and Wesson again. I'm okay with recalls, as long as they make it work. This is not working. I would rather have paid 50 bucks to get it back within a month than wait what is looking to be 3-4, maybe 5 months. How quickly did Ruger get the LCP fixed? I'm pretty sure it was quicker than this.

PPK/s return

I missed Big Brown. I found the note from UPS attached to the door. They will try again tomorrow after 5PM. From the day it was shipped until it showed up today was 76 calender days.

Mine arrived home tonight. Though it shipped yesterday on 2-day air, it in fact came in one day. UPS doesn't like leaving these laying around if they don't have to.
Not much to say that others haven't. Polished the ramp, and repaired the decock lever system. Sent with one mag, came back with one mag. Same serial number, same box, all is ok.
I now notice a definite two-stage feel to the safety lever. As if the first step puts the safety into play, the second step drops the hammer. I'm only going by "feel," I haven't looked inside yet.
As to the question about what the punch mark inside the tang looks like. A simple, round punch mark, about the size of a small period. (eyeball 1/32 in??) Anybody could make a dot like this, there is nothing remarkable or specific about it. Certainly nothing like a trademark or S/W logo, or anything unique. I'll take it to the range, maybe tomorrow, maybe Saturday. I did find some .380 ammo during the wait!
So that's it for me on this thread. Good luck to all you other folks still waiting!

Punch mark

I was dissapointed when I first looked at the punch mark, but then looked more closely, and noticed the little dimple. I think they were obligated to do something the home gunsmith couldn't duplicate. I was happy to get mine back.

Well Dave Workman says....

(In the 4-27-09 issue of Gun Digest the Mag), Workman writes that the S@W PPK... well, let me use his own words... ""I'll give this to the S&W version: It's very well done, and I have yet to hear a complaint from anyone who owns one of these pistols, so we can safely conclude that they work like champs".

Now don't get me wrong, I like reading Mr. Workman's articles, and respect his opinion (aside from this one...LOL!), but I wondered when I read this how he could write an objective article on a weapon he has never owned. ? And then praise up the SW version, which appears to have issues, hence the recall? Come on Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D Slow down and do your homework! Your fans (and I'm one of them),expect more.

I have been hearing grumbles/complaints pertaining to the S&W version of the PPK for the past several years at various New England gun shows and gun shops.

I'm glad I have the older Interarms .380 PPK/S. Never had an issue. The old pre-68 PPK I had in .32 was sweet and trouble free as well.

After reading another post from someone saying they heard they ran out of repair parts I called yet again. ! was just told by S&W that that have NEVER had parts for the PPK, and have only repaired some PPK/S models. The PPK is still waiting for a spring which they have yet to receive. They are now saying after all these months of evasive estimates that they have no estimated repair time. All my other emails received from S&W have been out and out intentionally deceptive because they knew exactly what model I was talking about. I'm now trying to get my pistol back unrepaired and apparently they do not want to do that. So, for those of you that have been on the fence about sending in your PPK, be prepared to loose it for an indefinite amount of time. The latest party line is that they had the parts for the PPK/S which are the same as the ones needed for the PPK except that the PPK also will need an internal spring replaced which is still in engineering.

Man, that is REALLY low-class! Never until now had we heard a difference between the two models. Now some of the different stories we've heard are starting to fall into place.

If I were you, I'd start to think about a class-action on behalf of the PPK folks. Deception is right!

Now I am really ticked off!!! They are going to get an earful from me. I am not going to wait another two or three months of this crap from them and going to demand my ppk be fixed at once or returned. maybe if enough of us start calling or emailing and tell tell them they have lost customers they will get on the ball. Either way ...hell will freeze over before I buy anything from S&W again.

Editing this after calling S&W...
They just informed me of the same thing. They have never had all the parts for the PPK and this guy told me they are just starting work on them.(after telling Bronson they are still waiting on the spring) So, this is yet another variation of their story. I let it be known that they had lost a customer and very likely hundreds of others and followed up with email pointing out their misleading info and ever changing stories and I found them to be unorganized, unprofessional and intentionally deceptive. When it gets back it is out of here....getting rid of it as I can't trust S&W at all.
